LISTEN TO KNOWLEDGE: LISTENING LIBRARY

Our project proposal 1. Please describe your project in no more than 100 words. Listening Library is a way getting those who are not able to see to become literate by listening to various kinds of books or topics they are interested in. The listening library is not only for the blind but also for those who are not able to read. In our country compared with other countries libraries for the disabled or for those that have not learnt how to read are not easily accessible. Access to information resources is a human right all around the world, just like others, blind people or those who are not able to read, due to some circumstances, have the right to have knowledge and information on global happenings like the problems that resulted for MDGs to be formed or anything and everything that goes around them that they might not have knowledge of due to lack of resources which would help them effectively in their education, cultural, social and political areas. 1

2. Defining your aims a) What do you want to reach with your project? Our aim is for those who are blind to not be left out from the world of reading and make them feel that they are part of community. The same goes for those who are illiterate not only does it make it easier for them to follow books but also through this way we hope to make them become interested in reading. Our aim is to make people aware of the world around them through fiction or non-fiction but most of all to make them aware of the UN and its MDGS. b) Which interim aims do you want to reach until when? We have two aims to reach which we have divided through time span: 1- Short term (within 1 year): using the funds, we want to form the foundation of this Project and start recordings of the chosen materials for the library. As well we would use the media and our website start advertising this project gain more support. 2- Long term: to make the Project an example to other associations and organizations so they can adopt this and with them and other institutions we want this to not only stay with in our region but to spread through out our country where there will be no excuse not to be informed. c) What is your central message to the participants? Our central message to participants is that no matter if you are disabled or illiterate everyone has a connection with a book: whether it is reading or listening to one. And the participants will not only be able to read but will be supplying us feedback on what they have read and their views of the world afterwards. Turn on a light to knowledge. 3. Planning a) Divide the project into steps you need to take to fulfil it. As obvious as this might be, it is important that the steps are carefully chosen. Dont include steps that are logical and that everyone will already know, but make sure not to leave out important steps. Rule of thumb is if youre not sure, include it. Step 1: Finding Organizations and Associations will be done by Altug and getting in contact with them will be done in the first two weeks Step 2: Researching books and themes with the help of professionals. The third and fourth week type of materials on the UN, MDGs and the world around us with the help of professionals and this will be run by one of our own members Step 3: Reaching Target Group Organizations which have been formed by the blind or aimed toward blind people will be worked with to help us determine and find the target Step 4: Researching Recording studios and finding voices and recording Damla will plan a program for the studio: which day, who will read what at what time. Step 5: Advertising through media

Gizem with the recording of the materials will be getting in contact with the media (newspapers, radio and television Step 6: Spreading the listening books, journals, articles and other materials through out the country. Step 7: Getting feedback from target group and Step 8: Making it available online through our website 4. Working in a team a) Who is part of the organising-team (Please be very specific here. You could even mention the names of the team members)? Altug Canbulat, Gizem Berksoy, Damla Alacam and all volunteer members of UNATR Youth Section. b) Who has which task? Altug Canbulat will be responsible for coordinator, finance, while Gizem Berksoy will provide logistics and the contact with media. Twice a week at the UNA-TR office, online conference d) How do you ensure that everyone responsibly fulfils their tasks? Through checking each other we ensure that everyone does what they are responsible of doing, we are filled with new and creative opinions and thoughts which bind us. e) How will you ensure sustainability of your project? How will you involve enough people to ensure that your project is carried on throughout the next couple of years? Becoming committed to what we do because we believe in it will make us stay on the project until it is successful which we know it will because of the lack of information and it being limited. Through our members and those who have heard and would like to volunteer will make this project carry on. f) If you do not have a strong UN Youth Association in your country yet, how will you involve the UNA in your project? As being a youth section of the UNA of Turkey we can get the older members support in the project. 5. Financing 3

This step was planned to be completed till June, 2009. ii) Writing up a cost-plan, which lists all costs the project creates in detail Altug Canbulat is in charge of all financial matters. This step was planned to be completed by May 2009; however at this moment costs cannot be specified. iii) Sending the project-plan to the potential sponsors Gizem Berksoy is responsible for sending the project plan. We are planning to work with universities, private sector companies that can sponsor us, and volunteers. 8. Solutions to the challenges a) Which are the main problems you foresee with the execution of your project? Raising funds for the beginning of our project might be one of the important problems we can face with. UNA Turkey is always eager to help us with our project. Besides we will get in touch with UN Ankara Office to gain their support. However, finding/settling with sponsors and other supportive private sector companies, which will provide the continuity and sustainability, might be difficult at first. b) How can you solve these problems? A good publicity will enable us to present the project, state our aims and make them known by the companies who can sponsor us. We have some contact people to let us reach the media and this will facilitate the advertisement we need to make.
