LEVERAGING TECHNOLOGY FOR SUSTAINABLE LIFE SCIENCES RESEARCH June 25, 2011 By Prahalad Achutharao Co-Founder and CEO

Geschickten Biosciences In late 19th century Chemistry was integrated with Biology to study the chemical structure of life which later became the reason for various path breaking work in disease management (vaccines and drugs). The early 20th century witnessed the role of Physics in Biology which gave rise to a new discipline for researchers to quantify biology. The late 20th century saw the marriage between Biology and Computing leading to another discipline called Bioinformatics. However, the first decade of 21st century experienced new chemistry being introduced to understand the chemical and physical structure of a DNA, RNA or a gene in massively parallel fashion. The ability to understand the genetic structure of a human DNA (made up of 3.1 billion chemicals) in labs in matter of days compared to years a decade ago forced people to look biology from as a combination of computing and mathematics, which is today called Computational Biology. So in summary the journey so far in making this planet healthier is BioChemistry to BioPhysics to BioInformatics and now Computational Biology (not BioComputing). The precedence of the word computing in Computational Biology is not just a mere coincidence; as a matter of fact it underscores the imperative nature and role of computing in the filed of Biology and Healthcare research at large. From PlantBiology for high productivity and high nutritious crops to AnimalSciences and Human Genomics and Genetics for personalized medicine, disease management and drug development Computational Biologists play a very important role in 21st century Biology. With over 7 billion people on this earth to feed, with diminishing land for farming, proliferation of communicable and noncommunicable diseases, factors affecting environment at large requires a detailed investigation of life and environment at genomics level. Understanding life and environment under sophisticated microscopes reveal interesting and path breaking signals; but translating these signals into meaningful insights leading to biological applications is the most crucial part of this whole genomics exercise and this complex job is not rested on any one discipline but an interdisciplinary group of people - Computer Scientists, Statisticians, Bioinformatics analysts and Biologists. The last two decades especially post Human Genome Project, genomics research has gained a very important place in life and health sciences research. From universities to small labs to big biotech companies and Pharmaceutical majors, every scientist is now in a great position to leverage genomics technologies for their benefit - the ultimate goal is to translate research into applications and hence take research from bench side to bed side. The time and cost of performing a genomics experiment is now tangible (thanks to Human Genome Project, started in 1983 - still going). In the early 2000, sequencing a human genome would cost a couple of million dollars and would take months. Post 2007 due to the advancement in genomics technology the same human genome can now be sequenced in matter of weeks (2 weeks) and under $25k. One can now imagine to get his/ her genetic code sequenced (or unraveled) to find the key to a individual's genetic making thereby

knowing predisposition of certain diseases in a tangible frame of time so that individualized prognosis and treatment can be designed to improve the quality of life. The only side effect of genomics intrusion into our lives is thus better quality of life But in all this good news i.e, the cost and time coming down drastically, affordability of genomics technologies for researchers and scientists lies a hidden challenge and opportunity - the opportunity of analyzing, interpreting and validating the biological data into biological information and there by designing applications in the areas of crop & seed science, animal husbandry and human genetics. The development of personalized prognosis, multi-buster drugs, bio-fertilizers, high nutritious crops etc is all a result of translating genomics knowledge into genomics applications. Geschickten Biosciences (www.geschickten.com) a niche life and health sciences company focusing on Computational Quantitative Biology and Data Analytics is poised to solve these complex genomic challenges to translate genomics into bio-applications. Geschickten, Indias first and premier computational quantitative biology company believes in leveraging applied mathematical techniques and algorithmic design combined with high end computing technologies such as High Performance and Cloud Computing for bringing life to life sciences - which apparently is our tag line. As premier R&D partners and expert computational biologists, Geschickten collaborates with Research Institutes, Biotechs, Biofuel, and Pharmaceutical companies to build picks and shovels to solve the genomics data deluge and data haze and thereby help researchers convert their hypothesis into discovery.
