Figure 1: Typical Setup for SmartBits Testing Figure 1 shows a typical scenario for SmartBits testing. PCs are connected to the SmartBits chassis at Location A and Location Z. The SmartWindow application is used as a virtual front panel to the SmartBits chassis. Using SmartWindow, a manual throughput test is set up to test the TLS circuit between the two locations. Each PC must be configured with an IP address that is on the same network as the local SmartBits chassis. For instructions on setting an IP address on the SmartBits, please refer to Chapter 2, Procedure 7 of the SmartBits 200/2000 Installation Guide available from spirentcom.com. A crossover Ethernet cable is used to connect the PC to the 10BASE-T port on the rear of the SmartBits. A straight through or cross-over Ethernet cable will be needed to connect to the devices under test. End-to-end connectivity (ie SmartBits to SmartBits) is established by providing the transmitting port in each SmartBits chassis with a unique MAC address. Use the following procedures to establish control of the SmartBits chassis:

Step 1 - Start the SmartWindow application. Step 2 - Click on the SmartBits tab and select the SMB-200 icon.

1.

2.

The virtual front panel window will appear. Notice at the bottom of the window that you are OffLine. Step 3 Click on the Options menu and select Connection Setup

Step 4 From the Connection Setup window, select the Use Ethernet/TCP button. In the Remote Host field, type in the IP address of the SmartBits chassis that you are connecting to and keep the TCP Port value at 16385.

Step 5 Use the built in Ping utility to verify connectivity to the SmartBits. If successful, the following output will result:

Click on the Close button .

Step 6 From the virtual front panel window, click on the Actions menu and select Connect. (You can also connect using the F8 key or by clicking on the Connect icon on the Toolbar.) Once connected you will see the identical card configuration of the chassis you are connected to.

At the bottom of the window, check to see that you are OnLine.

Part Two - Setting up a throughput test for TLS using SmartWindow Once control of the SmartBits is established, port and test parameters must be manually set up. You must plan ahead to design a valid test scenario. As an example, we will assume the following conditions: The customer has a 10 mb TLS circuited to be tested. Port speed and duplex of the CPE devices (and therefore the SmartBits) will be 100mb and half duplex The test will be run bi-directionally for 30 minutes (1800 seconds) Packets sizes will be fixed at 512 bytes Location A SmartBits MAC = 00 00 00 00 00 02 Location Z SmartBits MAC = 00 00 00 00 00 01

Step 1 Setup the port speed and duplex of the transmitting port. Click anywhere on the card being used for the throughput test. A drop down menu will appear. From this menu you can check or uncheck port speed and duplex settings. In our example, we are using 100mb half duplex. So from the drop down menu, check off the 100 Megabit setting and make sure the Full Duplex setting is unchecked. Step 2 On the virtual front panel window, click anywhere on the card used for the test. A drop down menu will appear. Select Transmit Setup and the Streams Setup window will appear. Click on the This Port button to bring up the Transmit Setup window shown below. Test parameters and MAC address information will be entered from this window.

The window above shows the Transmit Setup window with default values.

Step 3 Set up the test parameters for the SmartBits chassis in Location A (See Figure 1). Enter the following information for each field: Test Parameters Mode = Timed Burst Secs = 1800 (30 minutes) Length (bytes) = 508 *Note: when entering the length, subtract 4 bytes for the CRC check. Example: 512 4 = 508. Background = Custom *Note = This value can be customized or default data patterns can be selected. Interpacket Gap Rate = 10 Interpacket Gap Units = %Utilization MAC Address Information Location A SmartBits MAC = 00 00 00 00 00 02 (MAC source) Location Z SmartBits MAC = 00 00 00 00 00 01 (MAC dest) Once all the information is entered, the Transmit Setup window for the SmartBits in Location A should look like this:

Click OK to get out of the Transmit Setup window, click OK to get out of the Streams Setup window. Step 4 Set up the test parameters for the SmartBits chassis in Location Z Repeat Steps 1 through 3 for the SmartBits chassis in Location Z. The only difference is that the Source and Destination MAC addresses are swapped. Once all the information is entered, the Transmit Setup window for the SmartBits in Location A should look like this:

REMINDER End to end connectivity between SmartBits chassis is via MAC addresses. Note that Location Z is now the source and Location A is the destination. Click OK to get out of the Transmit Setup window, click OK to get out of the Streams Setup window. Each SmartBits is now set up to generate a 10 megabit Ethernet data stream for 30 minutes (1800 seconds) using 512 byte packets. Location A is transmitting to MAC address 00 00 00 00 00 01 which is the SmartBits at Location Z. Location Z is transmitting to MAC address 00 00 00 00 00 02 which is the SmartBits in Location A. Part 3 - Running the throughput test and calculating the results The following procedures should be followed at each location. Step 1 Display the Event and Rate Counters

Click anywhere on the card that is configured to run the throughput test and select Display Counters. The following window will pop up:

Make sure to check Show Events and Show Rates in the upper left corner of the window. Click on the Clear Counters button to clear all counters before running the test. Step 2 Synchronize the two SmartBits chassis. Note: The following procedure should be done on each SmartBits. From the virtual front panel window, click on the BURST icon on the transmitting card and allow the two SmartBits to learn each others MAC addresses.

10

Verify that you are receiving packets from the remote SmartBits chassis. Once the two SmartBits are synchronized, click on the STOP icon on the transmitting card.

Step 3 Clear all counters and start the throughput test. Click on the Clear Counters button on the Counters window. From both locations and at the same time, click on the BURST icon on the transmitting cards to start the test. The test has now started and will run for 30 minutes. Once 1800 seconds have passed the test will automatically stop. Step 4 Calculate the test results. Use the information in the Counters window to calculate the test results. Once calculated, the results should be extremely close to 100% to validate the circuit. The calculations are as follows: Z to A throughput = A RX Packets / Z TX Packets A to Z throughput = Z RX Packets / A TX Packets
