Just when you think that your world is pretty routine ... Stuff Happens!! In our case the stuff happened to be the Canada Post labour dispute. When faced with the uncertainty of whether we could get our publications delivered in a timely manner, the most prudent business decision would have been to immediately lay off everyone and wait for the dispute to be resolved. While we wouldnt make any money during that time, neither would we lose a whole bunch of money. However, there were any number of other considerations to take into account ... fairness to our staff, service to our business customers and of course you, our readers. You may in fact be getting this issue of our publications at the same time that you get the previous issue. You see, we actually delivered the Hampton and Sussex publications to Canada Post on schedule, but they apparently got Lost and before they were Found Canada Post initiated the employee lock out. And there they were, some 18,000 publications, the bulk of them trapped in a publishers worst nightmare. All of the work and expense to produce them had been incurred, but without delivery we could end up without a single cent of revenue. The missus wasnt sleeping very well and even started counting up the change in a tin can I throw the occasional dime or quarter into. It certainly wouldnt take a long strike to put a major dent in my plans for another tractor. With the Valley Viewer and Westides, we again made every effort to produce and print the publications but this time we were unable to even get them through the doors. Stuff Happens. So what lessons have we learned??? Well, certainly it would be nice to do without Canada Post!! But, the quality of delivery, right to your mailbox, is a key part of our quality and what differentiates us from the others!! A real alternative possibility exists!! The Corporate Jet!!! He just loves to carry stuff around in his mouth!! Averaging 20,000 deliveries weekly would certainly do wonders for his figure, although he is looking pretty slim right now. You would never find a friendlier delivery person and if you offered up a little dog bone or two in exchange for your publication you might just discover that the deliveries are only minutes apart. Darn!! I can see it now 20,000 publications delivered to ten houses and in less than two hours!!! Lesson number two do everything exactly the same!! Caring for staff, advertisers and readers is never a cheap solution to running a business, but it is the right one!! 800

The Capital Campaign will address the need for innovative programming and services as well as necessary updates to the building. The Boys & Girls Club strives to provide a safe, supportive place where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life. Our Club focuses on the positive potential of every child. Currently serving over 2,200 children and youth in the greater Saint John area, the Club offers programs during critical out-ofschool hours when children and youth are most at risk. Part of the proceeds of this campaign will enhance our facilities to engage youth ages 9-14 in art, music, computer technology, environment, fitness and work readiness programs. With your help The Boys & Girls Club of Saint John will raise $750,000. Our focus: Development of programming space for art, music and experiential learning promoting pro-social relationships and empowering youth to become resilient self sufficient adults; Gymnasium upgrades for sports and activities focusing on physical and emotional health; A 24 passenger bus for daily programs and special daytrips where children and youth experience events, adventure and possibilities beyond their current reach; Information technology infrastructure and training; Upgrades to the club exterior property and grounds to promote safety and to instill pride and belonging; Energy upgrade for efficiency and improved environmental awareness; An outdoor community playground suitable for children and families. Friends and volunteers of the MADD Saint John & Area Chapter gathered on Saturday, June 11th at Rockwood Parks Fisher Lakes, raising over $11,000 at their 6th annual Strides for Change Walk event! Saint John Radio kicked off the day by providing great music while MADD Saint John & Area Chapter President, Rick McNulty, led the walkers in a warm up. Rick McNulty, said it was wonderful to see so many people out to support our mission to stop impaired driving and to support victims of this violent crime. This money stays in our community and helps us to continue with that mission. We want to thank MLA Carl Killen for coming out to show his support, and to everyone who supported our walk today, whether through prize donations, pledging a walker or walking themselves. He then asked for a moment of silence for all those who have been impacted by impaired driving. The sun tried to peek through as walkers took to the trails. A BBQ, provided by the managers of our local Sobeys Stores, awaited hungry walkers who enjoyed delicious hot dogs, hamburgers, and refreshments. As the walk was coming to an end, Mark McNultys name was drawn from a large drum of entries as the winner for a one week RV rental from Leisure Time Sales & Service! Congratulations to Mark and thanks to Leisure Time Sales for the sponsorship!

The glorious German Iris are almost at the end of their blooming period and before the color fades away its a wise practice to take a permanent marker and write the color and height on one of those lovely spear like leaves, its a great help when one moves to the next essential stage of caring for these lovelies. When a clump of Iris has been in the same spot for five or more years they are in danger of a slow demise, the rhizomes from which the plant derives nourishment begin to grow on top of each other and the whole show usually becomes a breeding ground for the detestable Iris borers, slugs and earwigs. At this stage it is important to dig the whole clump up; separate the individual units; clean out every morsel of weed and play at surgeon. Though a sharp knife or secateurs might be more readily available than a scalpel this is definitely operation time. Every rhizome needs to be cut back until the sliced part is pure white, if there is evidence of the dreaded borer, ugly little beast it is too, it needs to be cut in two, all diseased parts are best burned rather than composted unless you are sure that a decent level of heat is going to be produced in the process. I would hazard that its safe to put it out for the Crane Mountain chaps. The next stage is the fun part, you now have more plants than you can possibly use, so, having carefully marked them, you can use what you need, then be generous with your neighbours and present them with first class plant in the color range that suits their preference. To plant successfully one needs to make a little inverted V in the soil, park the rhizome on top of the peak and ST. JAMES THE LESS ACw drape the roots down in the valley, covering with the excavated The St. James the Less ACW meets for quilting every Thursday soil, it is essential to leave that woody looking rhizome open to the from 1:00-4:00pm. For more information contact 847-3268. 211 sun and to have them all facing in the same direction. Iris do not need a great deal of food but will appreciate a mix of compost with a wee pinch of bone or blood meal to help set a good root system. It helps the plant to withstand all this invasive surgery if you take a pair of large scissors and reduce the leaves to 6 or 8 creating a fan like foliage that will soon be producing new leaves, we may be needing fans if the glorious sunny weather continues!!! Enjoy the bounty. 805

Feeling low this summer? Then come to the Kennebecasis Public Librarys Summer Reading Club program. This years theme is The Skys the Limit! Join us as we learn about all kinds of things that are up in the air. The Summer Reading Club is a free library program for all children from birth to middle school-age. Participants are encouraged to set a goal for how many books they would like to read over the summer, then record books as they read them. Studies have shown that children who dont read over the summer months can lose up to 50% of the knowledge they gained in the previous year of school, so we would like as many children as possible to come and sign up! Children who cannot read can be read to by a parent or older sibling. Registration is already underway, but feel free to come by during library hours and sign up! As part of the Summer Reading Club, the library offers daily childrens programs for children of all ages; be sure to drop by the library and pick up a calendar. Please note that our activities are geared to specific age groups. The Summer Reading Club staff are very excited for you to come out to our programs this summer. Hope to see you there! Thank goodness for summer finally arriving. I really did not mind the old-fashioned winter we had, with lots and lots and lots of snow. The snowshoes got lots of use and I could then come in and curl up by the woodstove with a good book and not feel in the least bit guilty. But the so-called Spring, that was another thing altogether. The occasional nice day was invariably in the middle of the week when I was working, and the weekends were cold and wet almost without fail. Yuck! It may not be super fabulous weather as yet, but it is much improved. I can finally cart the last of my winter clothes to the basement closet and once more enjoy summer skirts and dresses. To add to the fun, one of our daughters was just married, so of course I wanted a new dress. I knew exactly what I wanted too. Finding it, however, was more problematic that I expected. Michael is thankful I did not have more notice of the wedding than I did, as I was out looking each week and had brought home about six dresses by the end of it. I never did find the one I envisioned, and in fact it was not until I was actually dressing for the wedding that I decided which one I was going to wear. The wedding was beautiful, the ceremony unique and the food and conversation were warm and relaxed. Mikie even managed to get off the tractor for a few hours and cleaned up quite nicely. Unfortunately to counterbalance the good news, we have also had to contend with the Canada Post strike. I know for a lot of people having the post office shut down has been a minor inconvenience rather than a big pain in the you-know-what, but for us it has been a major headache. Thank you to our advertisers, our staff and our readers for hanging in there and getting through this with a smile. You guys are great! A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken. ~ James Dent. 801
