BIRKOSIT Description
for maximum temperature and pressure resistance

BIRKOSIT Dichtungskitt is a single-component, paste luting agent/sealing material for industrial use wherever conditions of temperature combined with pressure on smooth, plane sealing surfaces (butt joints) make extreme demands on the quality of the sealing compound. This applies, in particular, to the sealing of metallic joints in: steam and gas turbines, compressors, generators, expanders, pumps, flange joints, etc. BIRKOSIT Dichtungskitt withstands hot steam and air, hot and cold water, light fuel oils and lubricants, as well as crude oil and natural gas at temperatures of up to 900 C. The adhesion on sealing surfaces and butt joints is so high that a one hundred percent seal is guaranteed even for pressures up to 250 bar. The pressure resistance for flanges without sealing rings is guaranteed up to 450 bar, and even up to 550 bar for screw joints. When used in accordance with instructions and with regular servicing as required for steam and gas turbines as well as for the application areas stated above, we guarantee a service life for use on machined sealing surfaces (butt joints) of 10 years. BIRKOSIT Dichtungskitt is suitable for sealing all surface sizes. The surface quality of the sealing surfaces complies with milled/scraped surfaces with a finishing accuracy of Ra = 0.8 m to 1.2 m. Sealing surface damage of 0.2 mm is compensated with BIRKOSIT Dichtungskitt . To compensate individual points of severe damage of 0.2 mm to 1.0 mm, we recommend our additional products BIRKOSIT Dichtungskitt Filling1000 and BIRKOSIT Dichtungskitt Filling2000. Apply the BIRKOSIT Dichtungskitt to the dry sealing surfaces with a brush or putty knife. The layer thickness to be applied is 0.2 mm to 0.3 mm. The product can be subjected to workloads immediately! It does not cure, will not change its consistency even after several hours, and remains flexible and elastic. It is therefore also suitable for butt joint machining. The colour is reddish brown. Heating the tin to room temperature or adding a tenth part of standard linseed oil varnish will improve the brushability. Packed in 1 kg tins. If stored correctly, BIRKOSIT Dichtungskitt has a storage life of 5 years in the tin. Its properties are stable and it is flexible in use. Close the tin properly if only a part of the contents is going to be used.

Service life of the product BIRKOSIT Dichtungskitt

BIRKOSIT Service life
When used in accordance with instructions and with regular servicing as required for steam and gas turbines, we guarantee a service life of 10 years for use on machined sealing surfaces (butt joints) with a finishing accuracy of Ra = 0.8 m to 1.2 m. For high-pressure turbines (H), medium-pressure turbines (M) and low-pressure turbines (L) we guarantee that the product will withstand hot steam and hot air, hot and cold water, light fuel oils and lubricants as well as crude oil and natural gas up to 900C and withstand pressure up to 250 bar. The following information on the tin label of our products ensures reliable service life monitoring: Filling date, unopened useable until, service life after opening, opened on (the last detail is to be entered by qualified staff working for the customer) Unopened tin If stored correctly, we guarantee a service life of the product in the tin of 5 years. Opened tins If the tins are resealed correctly after partial use, we guarantee a service life of the product of 3 years.

4.1 General comments: Inhalation is not a primary mode of exposure. The measures provided are of a general nature. 4.2 In case of eye contact: Hold eyelid wide open and thoroughly and continuously rinse out with water. Seek medical attention if irritation persists. 4.3 In case of skin contact: As far as possible remove the product using a clean soft cloth and wash affected areas of the skin thoroughly with water. 4.4 In case of ingestion: Arrange medical treatment as necessary for affected persons. 4.5 In case of inhalation: Take those affected into fresh air. Seek medical attention in case of nausea. 4.6 Instruction to the doctor: No special treatments are known. Just treat any symptoms. Suitable extinguishing agents: CO2 powder and foam extinguishers, water spray jet. Unsuitable extinguishing agents from safety reasons: water in full jet. Particular hazards due to the product or due to its combustion products: As a rule no particular hazards are to be anticipated since the product is exclusively sold in small containers. The product is combustible. With incineration or thermal decomposition of the product harmful and irritating gases and vapours are released. Special protective equipment and/or measures for firefighting: The measures specified below are based exclusively upon large fires. Cool off the fire-damaged containers with a water spray jet. In case of fire employ self-contained breathing apparatus and don protective clothing. As far as possible collect and dispose of extinguishing water. Pick up undamaged small containers (cans, tubes, etc.). If larger amounts of product have been spilled due to damaged containers, don protective clothing (See point 8.2.1) and stop further product escaping. Otherwise, clear up spillages/leakages with a dry absorbent agent (sand, soil, generalpurpose binder, etc.) and dispose of them as specified in point 13. Clean the floor thoroughly.

7.1 Handling: Process product only in well-ventilated wor premises. Do not smoke when processing the product. Follow the application instructions exactly. 7.2 Storage: The following measures are based upon storing large quantities of the product. Store the product dry and cool in the sealed original containers. Take appropriate measures to prevent the product from entering the sewage or water circulation systems in case of spillage. Do not store the product near to foodstuffs, beverages or animal feeds, and ensure it is inaccessible to children. Heed the storage class when storing large amounts or storing in bulk. Storage class: 11, Storage class concept of the VCI (1991) (German Chemical Industries Association) 8.1 Design of technical systems/plants: No additional measures are required beyond those in point 7. 8.2 Components having workplace-related limiting values: The current product contains no components having workplace-related limiting values. 8.2.1 Work hygiene and personal protective wear: Do not eat, drink or smoke in the workplace. Avoid sustained/repeated contact with the product. Change soiled workwear and clean thoroughly before re-use. Do not rub your eyes with dirty hands. Wash hands after working and before going to the toilet. Empty containers fully (cans, tubes, etc.) and dispose of them in the standard recycling process. End users can suitably dispose of small amounts of product residues in the original packing by handing them in to their local hazardous waste plant (or mobile hazardous materials collection vehicles). Professional users must dispose of the product in accordance with the specified waste code number.
