he aim of this 28-volume Encyclopedia is to
present the contents of different streams of
Indian Philosophical texts citing experts on the
points that seem debatable. The volumes include
a Bibliography, a Glossary and treatments of Nyaya-
Vaisesika, Samkhya, Yoga, Purva Mimamsa, various
Vedanta systems and certain philosophi-cally
important sects of Shaivism and Vaishnavism, as
well as Jaina and Buddhist philosophy.

Agni
The Vedic Ritual of the

he larger Vedic rituals were primarily
dedicated to Agni and Soma. One of the most
elaborate of these ceremonies was called
Agnicayana, the piling of Agni, or, simply, Agni.
During its performance, a large altar in the shape
of a bird, dedicated to Agni was piled from more
than a thousand bricks.
The first volume contains a discussion of the
place of the Agnicayana in the Vedic Srauta tradition,
its textual loci, traditional and modern
interpretations of its origins and significance and
an overview of the Nambudiri Vedic tradition. The
bulk of the volume is devoted to a detailed
description of the 1975 twelve-day performance,
richly illustrated with tipped-in photographs,
mostly in colour, tables and maps.
The second volume contains contributions by
an international galaxy of scholars on archeology,
the pre-Vedic Indian background, geometry, ritual
vessels, music, mudras,
mimamsa, a survey of
srauta traditions in
recent times, the
influence of Vedic
ritual in the Homa
traditions of Indonesia,
Tibet, China, Japan and
related topics. There
are translations of the
relevant Srauta sutras of
Baudhayana (together
with Calands text) and
the Jaiminiya (with Bhavatratas commentary) as
well as the Kausitaki Brahmana.
Future generations will look with admiration on what has been
achieved here. With this epoch-making initiative, Frits Staal and
his collaborators have earned the gratitude of the history of
civilization.

edic mathematics is a new and unique system
based on simple rules and principles which
enables mathematical problems of all kinds to be
solved easily and efficiently. The methods and
techniques are based on the pioneering work of
the late Bharati Krishna Tirthaji, Sankarcarya of
Puri, who established
the system from the
study of ancient Vedic
texts coupled with a
profound insight into
the natural processe of
mathematical reaso-
ning.
It is based on
sixteen principles
which lie behind short
rules of working, or
aphorisms, which are
easily remembered. In
the Vedic system these aphorisms are called sutras,
simple terse statements expressing rules,
definitions or governing principles.
This book should be taken as an introductory
volume. Many of the methods are developed
further at a later stage and so, in the present text, it
may not be apparent why a particular method is
being given. An important characteristic is that,
although there are general methods for
calculations and algebraic manipulations, there
are also methods for particular types of calculations.
For example, specifically in multiplying and
dividing numbers close to a base of ten, a hundred,
a thousand, etc. Where such particular methods
are introduced at an early stage it is because they
relate to more general aspects of the system at a
later stage or are simply very quick and easy ways to
obtain answers.
J.T. Glover...shows clearly that when the formulas are understood,
particularly in relation to one another, Vedic mathematics presents
unified mathematics.

our sexual relationships.

develops and is moulded through love. This is
explained in the third section in a wonderful way
in Character-building and the Art of Personality.
The fourth section Moral Culture explains that
moral standards cannot be fixed once and forever,
neither culturally nor individually. An individual
may grow from one stage to the next thereby
changing attitudes and behaviour accordingly, thus
contributing to its own growth and improved social
relationships.

The Muktevara Temple
in Bhubaneswar

W
hile much of a general nature has been
written about the temple architecture of
Orissa, there have been until now few studies which
focus on a single Orissan temple. Yet such studies
are of great importance, not only in contributing
to an understanding of stylistic development, but
for the proper assessment of the unique formal
and iconographical features of a given monument.
This monograph will attempt to address both
the problems of formal development and symbolic
meaning in relation to the Muktesvara temple. It is
divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 is a review of
the literature on the Hindu temple in Orissa; it
places this study within its scholarly context, and
indicates the various approaches to the subject yet
to be taken. Chapter 2 takes into account the
historical and religious background. Chapter 3 is
a detailed description of the Muktesvara temple
and its sculptural program. Chapter 4 is an
interpretation of the
temple and its icono-
graphy. The sculpture
of the temple is seen as
constituting a cohesive,
unified program that
can be read at a variety
of levels, rather than as
a generalized arrange-
ment of various sculp-
tural motifs. The
Muktesvara temples
symbolic meaning can
be interpreted more
fully if a functional context is kept in mind. Chapter
5 presents a chronological sequence for temples
preceding, contemporary with, and following the
Muktesvara, tracing the development of the
mature style, and indicating the place of the
Muktesvara within this development. It establishes
the Muktesvara as the temple which makes shift
from earlier styles, also introducing various non-
Orissan elements which came to have a lasting
impact on the Orissan temple.

orld renunciation was a well established
religious life-style during the time of the
Buddha. It must have been in existence for at least
a couple of centuries before that time; we find
allusions to it in the early Upanisads.
A close examination of the Text shows that it
consists of five main parts of varying lengths:
Preliminary discussion on renunciation [1-4],
Procedure of renunciation [5-21], Daily practices
of a renouncer [24-50, 54-59], Wandering and rain
residence [60-65], and Miscellaneous topics [66-72].
Two short sections, 22-23 and 51-53, are inserted
as appendices after Part Two and in the middle of
Part Three, respectively. The first appendix deals
with the period of study immediately following
renunciation. This discussion naturally follows that
on the procedure of renunciation, because the
latter ends with the new renouncer placing himself
under the guidance of a teacher.

AN INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON
NATYASHASTRA
A
n International Seminar on Natyashastra of
Bharat Muni was organised in Banaras Hindu
University (BHU), Varanasi jointly by Theology
Department, BHU, IGNCA and Lincoln University,
from March 8th to 10th. C.R. Gharekhan, Chairman,
IGNCA, presided over the function, while Prof.
O.P. Singh, VC, BHU, was the chief guest. Among
other prominent people who graced the occasion
were Dr. Shrinath Nair, Lincoln University, Prof.
P.N. Shastri, Kalidas Akademi, and Prof. K.D.
Tripathi, IGNCA, Varanasi. All the speakers were
unanimous in their views that Natyashastra of
Bharatmuni is the most ancient and complete
manual on Indian theatre, music and other
performing arts. There is no comparable treatise
in any other language and it requires deep research

Shree Mataji Nirmala Devi,
founder of Sahaja Yoga, died in
Genoa, Italy. Born to a Christian
family in Chhindawara (M.P.),
India, her parents were Prasad
and Cornelia Salve, direct
descendants of the royal
Shalivahana dynasty.
She came to be known by the name of Shri
Mataji Nirmala Devi - the revered Mother who
was born with complete Self Realization. She
knew from a very young age that she had a
unique gift which had to be made available to
all mankind. She began the promotion of Sahaja
Yoga, a method of meditation to awaken the
spiritual power of every human being (which
the Hindus name the Kundalini, the Muslims
call the Ruh and the Bible describes it as the Holy
Ghost) and was amazed at the results. This is now
popularised in 140 countries in the world.
Nirmala Devi started an international
hospital in Mumbai to cure patients all over the
world through Sahaja Yoga methods. She also
set up an international cancer research centre
in Mumbai in order to study the effects of Sahaja
Yoga, an international music school in Nagpur
to promote classical music, and a charity house
in Delhi.

our eminent Sanskrit scholars were felicitated
by Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar with
Ramkrishna Jaidayal Dalmia Shreevani Alankaran
(RJDSA) Awards 2009 and 2010 for their
pioneering work in contemporary Sanskrit
literature.
While Pandit Mohan Lal Pandey received the
award for 2009, Prof. Hare Krishna Satapathy
received the honour for 2010. The foundations
Yuva Alankaran awards given to eminent young
scholarswent to Professor Piyushkant Dixit for
2009 and Dr. Dhanurdhar Jha for 2010.

On Soft and Hard Power
The concept of soft power has gained
currency recently. It is associated with the name
of Joseph Nye, who has argued that if power
consists of the ability to alter someones
behaviour in ones own interest, then force
need not be the only way of doing so. The
superiority of ones culture can also in good
measure secure it.
The concept, while extremely useful, may
not be that new. In the colophon of his famous
Arthastra, its author Kauilya claims to have
resuscitated both astra and stra. The
classification arguably conforms, in its broad
contours, to hard and soft power. In fact,
Rammanohar Lohias succinct statement of how
the British subjugated India may contain this
double allusion, for he says that the British
ruled India with bullet and language
bandook ki goli aur angrezi ki boli.

ANCIENT INSCRIPTION
ON CHERA HISTORY FOUND
A
n inscription that could prove to be a landmark
in the history of Chera rule in South India has
been found at a temple in Kurumathur, near
Areekode (Malappuram) Kerala. The epigraph
provided the direct proof to establish the date and
rule of the first perumal of Mahodayapura
(Kodungallur).
The inscription, unearthed during the
renovation of the Kurumathur Vishnu temple, gives
not only the date of the first Chera king but also his
name in full. Engraved on a granite slab in the
Pallava Grantha script, the inscription is in the form
of eulogy or prasasti, praising and legitimising
the rule of King Rama Rajasekhara of Maho-
dayapura.
Composed in Sardula Vikridita metre in
Sanskrit, the three-stanza inscription says that King
Rama Rajasekharas glory be spread across the
oceans. Even when connecting the ancestry of
Perumals to the epic hero Sri Rama, the inscription
gives May 24, AD 871, as an exact regnal date of
Rajasekhara Perumal in the form of a kali dina
chronogram.

HOMEOPATHY WORKS ON THE
PRINCIPLE OF NANOTECHNOLOGY

ust few months after the British Medical
Association rubbished homeopathy as witchcraft
with no scientific basis, IIT scientists have said the
sweet white pills work on the principle of
nanotechnology.
Homeopathic pills containing naturally
occurring metals such as gold, copper and iron
retain their potency even when diluted to a
nanometre or one-billionth of a metre, states the
IIT-Bombay research published in the latest issue
of Homeopathy, a peer-reviewed journal from
reputed medical publishing firm Elsevier.
IIT-Bs chemical engineering department
bought homeopathic pills from neighbourhood
shops, prepared highly diluted solutions and
checked these under powerful electron micro-
scopes to find nanoparticles of the original metal.
