Global Learning Project Proposal Identify a subject/curricular area: The subject area that I have chosen is art, which

is where my passion is at. Since I will be teaching Drawing and Painting class, the GLP will set up for one (or more) of those classes. Brainstorm: The overall goal of my GLP: The overall goal of this GLP is self-awareness in the midst of this global world. What you want the students to learn? The students will learn to have more understanding of other students lives in different places around the world and to appreciate their own lives at the same time. What you want them to do?

Each student will be paired up and encourage to communicate honestly about what they go through every day; the letter will be exchanged and then, they will attempt to describe that in drawing. What you feel will be the cross-cultural benefits? Art is an universal language; as they draw about their partners real life stories, hopefully they will be able to understand about the cultures more. If there is a final product, what might it look like? The final product will be a drawing that is due at the end of the semester; it will sum up the semester and shows the life that the partner had gone through. How will it benefit the participants so that they will want to be involved? Once again, the benefit is two-fold; it will give oneself an appreciation of how the life has been the one that we can easily overlook, and the other side is that the participants will also increase the awareness of other cultures through the eyes of their partners lives. Search and review existing projects: I was inspired by many different GLP from iEARN; my favorites were, A Vision, Global Art: Images of Caring and Magical Moments Around the World. All of these sites used writings and imagery

together, which was my first attraction incorporating art into GLP. I believe that art can be therapeutic, and thats when I thought that this kind of GLP can make a great impact. Working Title of my GLP: The title was not easy to come up with; I dont know if Im going to stay with this but as of now, the title is Drawing Our Lives. The subject of GLP would be art since the final project will be a drawing/ painting project. List the Types of GLP structures: I can think of many different types of GLP for this; the main one would be keypals since they will have to communicate regularly. In fact, they are exchanging the writings and the drawings, so that might be counted as Information Exchange. Im planning to create a web museum type of site, so ePublishing is another structure. Dr. KB suggested that it can be Sequential Problem Solving, but there isnt anything to solve in this project its rather very much reflective project. Define the project participants: Biographical info about myself and the host classroom: Im teaching at Fairfax High School which is located in Los Angeles. Im an art teacher and will be teaching Drawing and Painting classes next year; since art is an elective course, I get all of ninth through twelfth grade. What type of participants will you need to make the project successful? However, this GLP is not limited to high school students. I think whoever can write a paragraph in English and willing to draw should work. How many classrooms would make the GLP effective? I want, if I can, to have participants from many different countries with very different cultures. But, since Im new at this, I would like to limit the number of participants to around 100 including my students. What will my participants roles be? For the younger students, the teachers role would be much bigger than middle school and high school students who can manage different technological skills.

Global Learning Project Proposal Define Time Parameters What is the target date for implementing and concluding the GLP? The school will open again on September, 2011. My GLP will start with the semester and end in late January when the first semester ends. Will it continue annually, biannually? Ill have to see how it goes this year, then I might have a better idea about how it will continue on. State the rationale: Why is your project important or worthwhile? As I have mentioned earlier, this GLP has the potential of bringing personal healing and better understanding of what global citizens should be like. Weve been taught to be on the other persons shoes, and this GLP is teaching the same idea by looking at global life through the eyes of the partner who lives on the other side of the world. Write a synopsis: Drawing Our Lives will encourage students to see in different perspective and to be aware of the different cultural values. Through the exchange of writings and drawings, the students will be able to help and encourage another do live their own lives better. State specific Objectives, Standards and Global Learning Outcomes: The learning standards come from CA content standards for arts: 2.0 CREATIVE EXPRESSION Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Visual Arts

Students apply artistic processes and skills, using a variety of media to communicate meaning and intent in original works of art. 3.0 HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT Understanding the Historical Contributions and Cultural Dimensions of the Visual Arts Students analyze the role and development of the visual arts in past and present cultures throughout the world, noting human diversity as it relates to the visual arts and artists.

Global Learning Project Proposal What are the cross-cultural skills? Even though the project will run in English, its bound to use translation tool somewhere. The participants are not just learning a subject matter contents here; they will experience the life of different cultures through their writings and drawings. Define Main Tasks:

When the students are paired up, the partners will begin the communication by introducing themselves, then they are required to send a weekly letter containing what events have taken place in their lives during that week. When the story is received, it will be turned into a drawing/ sketch. The exchange will continue until the end of the semester, then for the final project, a drawing that sums up the whole semester is created and shared. All the participants are expect to consistently follow through by interacting with their partners through online museum of the drawings and the writings. Describe Project activities: Ill be in constant touch with the corresponding teacher(s) about the progress through emails, IM and blogs. Depends on the time difference, we might be able to pull a telecollaboration or eAppearance. My classroom encourages to collaborate by peer tutoring; students in the class can help each other with the ideas for the drawing and also the actual drawing (only a little bit). However, this would be an independent work rather than a group work; there would be no part of the project that will be done together. Describe how it will advertise: The advertisement would be the toughest part for me. I have Art Education 2.0 site which Im very fond of; it feels more at home there. Then, I guess I will have to go back to iEARN and other sites that I bookmarked before. I will have to look in to that carefully this summer. Describe how its going to be showcased: I would love to set up my own website that can showcase everything that Im planning of; online museum, blogging, collecting stories, etc. However, coming back down to a reality, Ill try to use on of the blogs

Global Learning Project Proposal and/or online albums and so on. It would be great if I can set up a virtual gallery walk and live interviews or video conferencing if possible. Define Resources Needed: Basically, the needed equipment would be a working computer(s) that is connected to the internet.

Writing software can be resolved by using web software, like Google Docs and stuff. A digital camera or a scanner is needed to upload drawings. Once in a while, we should be able to get laptop carts, then we can get the work done much easily, but until then we will use three computers that I have in the classroom. What kind of ongoing support do you envision needing to be successful? I would love to get a grant where I can get iPad lab; that will work perfectly with this project. I will also ask if I can have my classroom to bypass the security blocks a little bit i.e. online webmail account and SNS like Facebook. Etc. Assessment: Since its the first one, I would like to grade them on participation mostly; there will be a guideline on how much communication is needed. The final drawing will become the final project for the semester; Ill provide the rubric on the drawing part of the project. I would like to go through a few lessons on Digital Citizenship, and then Ill go through the basic skills like writing on a document or a blog, uploading pictures and replying. Challenges/ Constraints: The toughest part for this project has to be finding people to participate. I dont really know what would be the minimum number of needed participants, but Im not sure what else I can do if thats the case. Im pretty sure there might be many small and big obstacles for this project, but Ill take it as a learning curve; Ill eventually find my way.
