Dysmetabolic syndrome Dysmetabolic syndrome X: A constellation of metabolic abnormalities in serum or plasma insulin/glucose level ratios, lipids (triglycerides, LDL

cholesterol subtypes and/or HDL cholesterol), uric acid levels, coagulation factor imbalances and vascular physiology. (This is the official definition by the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists of this condition which is also known as the metabolic syndrome and syndrome X.) Dysmetabolic syndrome x is used to describe a group of factors that increase a person's chances of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Other names for dysmetabolic syndrome x include metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance syndrome, syndrome x, obesity syndrome and Reaven's syndrome. The factors involved in a diagnosis of dysmetabolic syndrome x include a waistline measurement over 40 for men and 35 for women, blood pressure over 130/85, and having high triglycerides, high fasting blood glucose readings, and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels (the good cholesterol) in the blood. Dysmetabolic Syndrome is a constellation of metabolic disorder that all result from the primary disorder of insulin resistance. The tendency for cardiovascular disease and premature for insulin resistance is inherited, but in an individual who inherit this tendency, the actual development of dysmetabolic syndrome (and/or type 2 diabetes) usually requires obesity and sedentary lifestyle. All the metabolic abnormalities associated with dysmetabolic syndrome can lead to cardiovascular disorder- when present as a group, the risk for cardiovascular disease and premature death are very high. weight loss and exercise constitute the best treatment, but failing this, drug treatment aimed at each metabolic abnormality is essential for reducing the overall risk. QUESTION: ARE FILIPINOS PRONE TO HAVE DYSMETABOLIC SYNDROME? WHAT CULTURAL FACTORS MAY LEAD US TO DYSMETABOLIC SYNDROME? WHAT CULTURAL FACTORS HINDER US FROM RECOGNIZING DYSMETABOLIC SYNDROME? AS AN ADVANCE LEVEL NURSE, WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF THIS PHENOMENON? yes, Filipinos are prone to contracting dysmetabolic syndrome. One cause of this is Cultural factors which icludes the food preferences, lifestyle practices and our perception of a "healthy body." Filipinos bond over food and are more on the liking of "fried unhealthy" dishes. Humba, lechon, chicharon and anything fried and high in fat cholesterol is a common staple in a filipino household. Because of this, hypertension, obesity and diabetes are one of the common diseases in this country. There is a high prevalence of unemployment which results to a sedentary lifestyle in most jobless filipinos who "tambay" and drink to past time away. Afternoon siestas or naps is also a culture that adds to the inactive lifestyle. Filipinos aslo have this "fat is healthy" perception wherein we were allowed to overfeed our children becasue we have a mentality they are cuter that way. Basically the unhealthy lifestyle starts at home and is practiced as we grow up which cause the many diseases like the Dysmetabolic Syndrome in which is a constellation of metabolic disorders.Philippines, being a poorly educated country, it hinders it's people from recognizing the effects and causes of Dysmetabolic Syndrome and because of poverty, eating healthy is more of a luxry than a must. We also have this "bahala na" mentality that adds more to the problem. Being an advanced level nurse, Health education and awareness is a good start.. By practing regular exercises and living a healthy lifestyle thats starts with me, i can preach what i practice. By educating the masses especially the lower class of the effects and risks of unhealthy lifestyle which leads to undiagnoses diseases, i can aware them and lead them to a healthy lifestyle. early detection of metabloic diseases can also prevent this constellation into a dymetabolic syndrome.
