TITLE:To calculate the lint percentage and trash percentage of given sample of bale cotton.

OBJECTIVES:1.Determine lint percentage. 2.Trash percentage. 3.Cage loss. 4.Non-lint percentage.

Apparatus:

Shirley analyzer. Weight balance. Bale cotton.

PROCEDURE:

100 gram sample of bale cotton was selected randomly from different bales. I cleaned the trash tray and started the machine. Then, the sample was fed in Shirley analyzer and completed the standard method of the machine. According to the standard method of Shirley analyzer, I passed through the cotton from machine and got lint L1 and trash T1.I passed the cotton again and got lint L2 and trash T2.L2 is pure lint. Similarly I got pure lint L4 and finally the trash T5. Then at the end, trash T5 was collected from trash tray of Shirley analyzer.

With the help of weighing balance, the weight of trash was calculated.

Test Procedure:
L1 Original sample is 100g. L2 (Pure lint) T2 T1+ T2 T3 L3 L4 (Pure lint) L3

T4 T3+T4 T5 Lint percentage = L2+L4+L5 Trash percentage= T5 Cage loss or invisible loss = 100-T5 Lint percentage =100-(L2+L4+L5+T5) Non-lint percentage= 100-lint percentage L5 (Pure lint)

Standard Values:

Under 1.2% 1.2% to 2% 2.01 to 4.0% 4.01 to 7.0 % Above 7 %

OBSERVATION AND CALCULATIONS:L2=74.48g L 4=10.08 L5=2.385 T5=10.38 Lint percentage=L2+L4+L5=74.48+10.08+2.385 =86.95g Trash percentage= 10.38% Cage loss= 100-(86.95+10.38) =100-(97.33) = 2.67% Non-lint percentage= 100-86.95 = 13.05%

Result:
Very dirty cotton.

PRECAUTIONS:

The sample should be weighted correctly. The machine should be used carefully. All trash should be collected in tray. The value of T5 should be taken every time.

Working of Shirley analyzer:

The Shirley analyzer opens the bunched cotton which we fed through the feed table.Fron rollers of machine help to take the cotton in. And by the rotating forces Shirley analyzer separates the lint from trash particles .And the removing trash collects in the bottom tray. Basically it works on the principle of rotation.
