by Edris Tamano on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 Iranaons (which can also be pronounced or spelled interchangeably as Iranons or Irranuns) are not LANUN or pirates--they are a people with an influential strength of character and a history that dates back to the earliest Hindu civilization, the glorious times of the Darangen that systematically evolved into lasting sultanates. They were a sovereign people ruling independent sultanates before being drawn to Philippine body politic. They have never been under the rule of the colonizers' sponsored Sultanate of Maguindanao, thence Sultanate of Mindanao. When, beyond the colonizers expectation, the declared paramount Sultan of Mindanao, Qudratullah or Kudarat (Corralat in Spanish chronicles) fought the enemy, he sought the aid of the Iranaon datus and spoke to them as peers, not as a ruler. Piracy is a reality, a global phenomenon--every nation big or small has their share of pirates. The Bangsa Iranaon is no exception since it was a big nation before the colonizers laid their foothold on our hallowed soil. Our federated Darangen ancestors before Islam were the rulers of the many small states in the archipelago. Our feared pirates we called Mangayao, their profession kapamangayao. The mark of a strong nation is one that cannot be intimidated--since time immemorial, the Bangsa Iranaon stood their ground and independence.
