Inequalities

Secondary school knowledge recap

1. First factorize the equation a. If you encounter an equation in the form ax+b2+c , you can add c into the equation, like this (ax+b+c)(ax+b-c) 2. Using the graphical method, find the range of values for when y<0 OR y>0 3. If there are simultaneous inequalities, you need to find the range of values that fulfill all the inequalities. (i.e. draw a number line to find the answer) 4. To show that an equation is always positive/ negative, use completing the square or discriminant or differentiation

Solving inequalities of the form

f(x)g(x) >0

1. We cannot use values for x that causes g(x) = 0 2. We can multiply both sides by gx2 to obtain fxgx>0 3. Hence solve the equation from there, remembering to state the value for x for which the equation is undefined, in the answer.

Solving inequalities with the modulus function

1. 2. 3. 4. For all xR, x2=x2= x2 xy= xy xy=xy, where y0 If a>0 and xR a. x=ax=a b. x<a-a<x<a c. x>ax<-a or x>a 5. x2=x 6. x<yx2<y2

Solving inequalities with the graphical method

1. Input the equations into the GC 2. Find all the points of intersection (watch out for points not seen in the scale of the graph) 3. The points of intersection would be your answer (just add <,,,>)
