In 2004, capture fisheries provided 81% of the

countrys domestic food fish supply, while the
balance of 19% came from aquaculture

Status of Philippine
capture fisheries
In 2004, capture fisheries (municipal +
commercial) landed a total of 2.2 million MT,
which is 16% higher than the MSY of 1.9 million
MT established in several scientific studies.
In is widely believed by the scientific community
that the growth rate achieved in the last 5 years
(3.35%) is not anymore sustainable.
In the coming years, fish supply would have to
come increasingly from AQUACULTURE if the
country is to remain self-reliant in food fish
supply.
