Call for Proposals

TheNationalAssociationforMediaLiteracyEducation(NAMLE)convenesmedialiteracyeducatorsand leaderseverytwoyearstoexpandtheknowledgeandpracticeofmedialiteracyeducationinthe UnitedStates.Wearecurrentlyinvitingproposalsforparticipationinour2011NAMLEConferenceto beheldinPhiladelphia,PAJuly2225th.Asamembershiporganization,NAMLEcelebratesthe increaseddiversityofvoices,pedagogiesandtechnologiesthatcomprisethegrowingfieldofmedia literacyeducation.Weseektofacilitatemedialiteracyeducationamonganincreasinglybroad constituencythatincludeschildren,familiesandadultsofallages,academicresearchers,P16 teachers,teachereducators,arteducators,communityleaders,mediaproducers,nonprofitpartners, faithbasedgroups,pediatriciansandotherhealthprofessionals.Forthe2011conferenceprogramwe anticipatearichmixofconversation,presentationandhandsonengagementwithavarietyofmedia andtechnologies.

2011ConferenceTheme GlobalVisions/LocalConnections:VoicesinMediaLiteracyEducation
Initsmostglobalsense,medialiteracyeducationprivilegesdiversityamongmediaformsand educationalconstituencies.The2011NAMLEConferenceseeksaglobalvisionofmedialiteracy educationavisionthatacknowledgesallformsofmediaasrelevant,including(butnotlimitedto) object,print,radio,photography,television,film,video,internet,andotherdigitaldevices.The2011 ConferencealsocommemoratesthetenthanniversaryofNAMLEandcelebratesitsgrowthasa professionaldevelopmentorganizationforanincreasinglybroadconstituencyofmedialiteracy educators.Theglobal/localconnectionsfacilitatedbytheconferencewillenableNAMLEtodeepenour professionalnetworkingcommunityasaknowledgenetworkingcommunitythroughtheinnovative usesofcommunicationtechnologiestointerconnectmedialiteracyeducatorsacrosstheworld. Conferenceattendeeswillcomeawaywithspecificpedagogicalknowledge,tools,andskillsthatwill enablethemtobebetterandmoreeffectiveagentsofchangeforandthroughmedialiteracy educationonbothlocalandgloballevels. TheCorePrinciplesofMediaLiteracyEducation(CPMLE)(http://namle.net/publications/core principles/)isanopenaccess,livingdocumentcreatedin2007byNAMLEmembers.Itfunctionsasa globalpositioningsystemofsorts,guidingtheexpansionofmedialiteracyeducationacrossdisciplines andcontexts.TheCorePrinciplesexpandtheboundariesofthefieldtoencompassnotonlywhatwe teachbutalsohowweteach,therebydistinguishingtheseasCorePrinciplesof"medialiteracy education"ratherthansolelyaskeyconceptsof"medialiteracy."BuildingontheseCorePrinciples,we seekproposalsthataccomplishanyofthefollowing:

Improvestheknowledgebaseforthosenewtothefieldofmedialiteracyeducation. Modelsbestpedagogicalpracticesinfamily,school,community,and/ororganizational environments. Supportshandsonpracticaltrainingforcriticalandcreativemediaproduction. Integratesmedialiteracyanddevelopingliteraciesassociatedwithevolvingtechnologiesin education. Reportsonresearchfindingsorinprogressstudieswithinthefieldofmedialiteracyeducation. Raisesawarenessofmedialiteracyeducationasatoolforsocialjusticeanddemocratic practices. Illustratesopportunities,challengesandnewdirectionsformedialiteracyeducationasa discipline.

TypesofSubmissions

PreConferenceWorkshop Apreconferenceworkshopisanopportunityfor12presenterstoprovideconferenceattendeeswith adeeplevelofengagementonaparticulartopic(approx.4hours).Thecontentcanrangefrom introductorytohighlyspecializedinnature,butmustbepertinenttothefieldofmedialiteracy educationandaddressafeltneedamongNAMLEmembers.Preconferenceworkshopsareoptional forconferenceattendees,requirepreregistration,andcomeatanadditionalcost(usuallyfor workshopmaterials).Duetospacelimitations,participantregistrationfortheseworkshopsisonafirst comefirstservedbasis.AllworkshopswillbeheldonFriday,July22ndfrom93PM. IndividualPresentation Individualsessionsareformalpresentationsthatincludeoneortwopresentersforapproximately1 hour.Sessionscanincludereportsorpresentationsofinnovativecurricula,exemplaryeducation approaches(formalorinformaleducation),communityengagement,orresearchpresentationsthat provideinformationaboutaparticularmedialiteracyeducationtopic.Anindividualsessionshould include1leadpresenter,andcouldincludeupto2additionalpresenters. WorkshopSession Aworkshopprovidespresenterswithanopportunitytoexchangeinformationorworkonacommon problem,project,orsharedinterest(approx.12hours).Presentationsshouldallowadequatetimefor reflectivediscussionandinteractionwithworkshopparticipants.Theworkshopformatalsoallowsfora moreindepthinteractionwithparticipantsandcanincludehandsonexperiencesandpracticeof applicationswithparticipants.Aworkshopcanincludeupto3presenters. PanelDiscussion Apanelsessionprovidesanopportunityforexaminingexplicitproblemsorcomplextopicsfroma varietyofperspectives.Panelistsshouldrepresentavarietyofviewpointsandofferalternative solutions,interpretations,orcontrastingviewpointsonthesubject(approx.12hours).Eachpanel memberisexpectedtoprepareabriefpositionpaperidentifyingcentralquestionsregardingtheissue

beingdiscussed.Panelscanhave35presentersandshouldalsoincludeamoderator. RoundtableDiscussion Intheroundtablediscussion,individualpresentersareassignedtonumberedtablesinalargemeeting roomwhereinterestedpersonsgatherfora1hourdiscussionwiththepresenterabouthisorher paperorproject.Thisformatisparticularlyappropriateforpapersaddressingtopicsbestpursued throughextensivediscussion.Authorsmustbringcopiesofthefullpaperandshouldremainavailable fordiscussionthroughoutthe1hoursession.Becauseofthephysicalconfigurationofthistypeof session,noadditionalaudiovisualequipment,suchasascreenoroverheadprojector,isprovided. Authorswishingtouseavisualpresentationmaydisplayitfromtheirownlaptopcomputerscreens.A roundtablediscussionincludes1presenterateachtable. DigitalPosterSession Apostersessionisanopportunityforpresenterstodiscusstheirtopicwithpeersinaninformal setting,somewhatlikeanexhibithallorinformationfair.Agoodposterpresentationcentersonone maintheme,presentsusefulinformation,andstimulatesdiscussion.Participantsarerequiredtocreate theirdigitalposterthroughhttp://edu.glogster.com/.Duringtheconference,participantsshouldbe preparedtogiveanoverviewoftheirposterandinitiateconversationabouttheirtopic.Participants canalsoprepareprintmaterials,ifdesired,thatincludecontactinformation,URL,andanyother informationbeyondwhatisavailableontheirglog. MediaDemonstrationorScreening Inademonstration,presentersfocusontheusesofaneducationalmediatool.Thismightinclude,but isnotlimitedto,thepresentationofapieceofsoftwaretoaidresearch,acomputerbasedsimulation, amultimediacurriculumkitormaterials,oramultimediabasedapproachtomedialiteracy. Introductoryremarksshoulddemonstratetheeducationalvalueofthematerial,suchasstrategiesfor classroomuseoranoverviewofresearch.Aninformaldiscussionorproblemsolvingsegmentmust followthedemonstrationorscreening.Thematerialsandpresentationshouldofferparticipantsaway toaccessnewknowledgeofsomecrucialconcept,perspectiveorskillthatcannotbesufficiently acquiredthroughdescriptionalone.Suggestedlengthis12hours.

SubmissionProcessandAcceptanceCriteria
TheConferenceProgramCommitteewillreceiveandreviewproposalsubmissionsuntil11:59PMPST January7,2011.Allproposalsmustbesubmittedthroughouronlinesystemat http://tinyurl.com/2apgrhx.ProposalswillundergorigorousreviewbyacommitteeofNAMLE membersfrombothinsideandoutsidetheUnitedStates.Theproposalreviewcommitteewillevaluate eachsubmissionbasedontheextenttowhichtheproposalsuccessfullycommunicatesthefollowing: GivesVOICEtoatleastoneofthemanyconstituenciesthatcomprisethegrowingfieldof medialiteracyeducation; ReflectsaGLOBAL/INCLUSIVEvisionofmedialiteracyeducation; MagnifiestheCOREPRINCIPLESofMediaLiteracyEducation;

SpecialCallforEntries&Nominations ModernMediaMakers(M3)
Since1999NAMLEhasshowcasedthevideoproductioneffortsofyoungpeople(K12)fromacrossthe nationthroughtheModernMediaMakers(M3)program.AttheNAMLE2009ConferenceinDetroit, M3tooktheformofanintensiveproductioncampthatgavehighschoolstudentsanopportunityto developskillsincriticalanalysisandmediaproduction.Overthecourseoftheconference,Detroitarea studentsworkedingroupstodevelop,shoot,editandpresentavideoprojectexploringthethemeof theconference.Throughouttheconference,M3participantshadopportunitiestoengagewith conferenceattendees.Studentsandtheirinstructorsparticipatedinconferencemealsandhad opportunitiestospeakabouttheirworksinprogress.Theypresentedapublicscreeningoftheirvideo projectsonthefinaldayoftheconferenceandledaquestionandanswersessionwiththeaudience. TheGlobalVisions/LocalConnections:VoicesinMediaLiteracyEducationthemeoftheNAMLE2011 ConferencecallsforamuchmoreintegrativeapproachtoourM3youthexperience.Tomagnifythis theme,M3willconsistofaglobalvideocompetitionandalocalproductioncampheldJuly2225th, 2011.

M3LocalProductionCampCallforParticipants

ThepurposeofM3Localistogivestudentsandtheirmentorsanopportunitytodeepentheir understandingofmedialiteracyeducationastheyengageinanintensivefourdaymediaproduction campduringtheNAMLE2011Conference(July2225th).Adiversegroupof20highschoolstudents fromaroundthecountryandtheiradultmentorswillteamwithotherstocreatetheirownoriginal videos,sharetheirperspectivesonmedia,andpresenttheirworkduringaformalM3screeningduring theconference.Inturn,theirworkprovidesayouthfulvoiceforthisyearsthemeofGlobal Visions/LocalConnections:VoicesinMediaLiteracyEducation. ThefocusforthisyearsproductioncampandtheonlineapplicationwillbeavailableontheNAMLE 2011ConferencewebsiteonorbeforeNovember1st.Mentorscannominateacohortofupto3 studentsandareexpectedtotravel,attendandparticipatewithstudentparticipants.Allapplicants shouldexpecttopaytheirtravelsexpenses;however,scholarshipsmaybeavailableforthoseinneed. NAMLE'sMediaLiteracyMediaAwardsbeganasthePartnershipforMediaEducation's(PME) OutstandingAchievementAwards.FirstpresentedatSummit2000:ChildrenYouthandMedia BeyondtheMillenniuminToronto,Canada,thepurposeoftheAwardswastoencouragemainstream mediatoincorporatemedialiteracyintotheirworkbypubliclyacknowledgingthosewhodoso. Currently,NAMLErecognizespeople,programs,initiatives,ororganizationsinmainstreammediathat: Haveraisedthevisibilityofmedialiteracyeducationormedialiteracy.
