Course Description: This course will introduce you to the abstract study of numbers and their relationship to one another. Pairs of numbers form graphic representations that bring us powerful visualization of relations. You will develop a more sophisticated way of dealing with word problems applying Algebra. The skills learned here are critical to the study of Geometry and Algebra II, as well as the quantitative aspects of any eld that you may wish to pursue in the future.

Materials: 1 Three Ring Binder with Dividers (Sections: Notes, HW, Test/Quizzes, FCAT Prep) Pencil (mechanical is preferred), Erasers, pencil sharpener with cover for shavings TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 iPod, iTouch, iPhone, iPad or App enabled smartphone
!

Benchmarks and Sunshine State Standards: Solve linear equations and model real-world situations using linear equations. Solve systems of linear equations and model real-world situations using systems of linear equations. Solve linear inequalities and model real-world situations using linear inequalities. Solve simple absolute value equations. Know and use the properties of addition and multiplication (commutative, associative, identity, inverse, and distributive) Understand the dierence between relations and functions and nd the domain and range of simple functions. Understand what slope is, how to nd the slope of a line from a graph or an equation, and how slope relates to parallel and perpendicular lines. Understand quadratic functions and their real world applications. Understand how to solve radical expressions and apply properties of square roots.

Utilize resources and time eciently and eectively Listen carefully and follow directions

Attendance: Every day is important! Your success in this course is directly related to how often you are present. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the work and notes that you missed. If you are on campus during any portion of the school day, your homework for that day will be due and any scheduled quiz or test must be taken. It is your responsibility to come see me if you arrive late to school or leave early and miss class.

If you miss the class the day before a test and return the day of the test, you will be expected to take the test as scheduled. If you missed two or more days before a test and return the day of the test, come see me and we can make arrangements for you to take the test at a later date.

Grading: Homework 10 points each Quizzes 50 points each Tests 100 points each Project 250 points Class Participation 5o You will have 2 quizzes and 1 test per chapter. There will be 1 project due every grading period.

Homework: Homework is assigned on Mondays for the entire week. Homework will be checked at the beginning of class. Its very important for students to copy the problem down, show all their work (when appropriate), and circle/box in their answers. Homework submitted with only answers shown will receive NO credit! Test and Quizzes: Students will be notied in advance of quizzes and tests. All graded test and quizzes will be return to the student for parental notication. All test and quizzes will be kept in the test/quizzes portion of the Honors Algebra I notebook.

Late Work: Late work will be accepted ONLY the following day for half credit. Work turned in after that will receive NO credit!

Important Information:

Students taking Honors Algebra I/Honors Geometry will take a midterm exam and a nal exam. The midterm exam will count for 20% of their fall semester grade and will be administered in January. A nal, statewide, exam will be administered in May. It will be computer based and will count for 30% of the students nal grade.

Message to Parents: This year Im encouraging students to use their smartphones, iPads, iPhones, iTouch, etc. in class. Students will be asked to download free apps so please dont be surprised by this request. Algebra/ Geometry can be dicult subjects to tackle and I hope the use of these apps will help the students become stronger mathematicians. Also, remember to download FindMe app on all your apple products in case any item is either lost or stolen!
