Search team update

Greetings from your Search Team (ST)! We have already begun our work toward calling a new rector to Trinity and want to keep you informed of our progress. We plan to give you updates in Each Trinitarian and occasional announcements at the 8 and 10 am services. In mid-march we met with Bishop Michael and received welcome advice and direction about how the Diocese will assist and support us through the coming months. Weve also met with Father John and Senior Warden Mindy. We thank Father John for his guidance based on years of experience with searches and for his good wishes; he will not be involved any further in the search process. We thank Mindy for her work with the Vestry to appoint the ST and for continuing to be there for us as a liaison with the parish as a whole; and we thank Huberta Murphy for her support and help in keeping our ST efforts separate from the day-to-day workings of the church. Finally, we appreciate the flexibility of the Mens Group and Book Group for letting us schedule our meetings in the parish library even though they had reserved it first. Were busy sorting out the logistics and procedures to support the serious responsibilities you have entrusted in us. We are doing our homework reading about successful searches and pitfalls to avoid. Next on the agenda is a dialog with wise ones Tom Murphy, Morgan Silbaugh, Bobbie Parini, and Bert Anderson. We are also checking in with a few congregations who have just completed their searches. Our first goal is to complete the Parish Search Request form necessary for posting the position online. Part of the form has already been done by the Parish Profile Committee. Our job is to discern in more detail the specific position responsibilities and skills we see in a rector. Once the Parish Profile and Parish Search Request have been approved by the Bishop, they will be posted online to open the nationwide call for our new Rector. We will let you know when this happens and give you the link so you can refer it to any priest you feel would be a good match for Trinity. We want the process to be as open as possible. At the same time, we must ensure that confidentiality is rigidly respected for those priests who do us the honor of considering a call to Trinity. The ST is blessed with the gentle and supportive spiritual guidance of Nancy Linton who serves as our chaplain. Our co-chairs Judy Clinton and Jamie Hutchinson are learning to email their way through scheduling, writing agendas, and getting many tasks allocated to the larger group. It turns out our throng has many talents: Anne McCollom and Russ Otte offer the wit and wisdom of having served on STs in the past; Colleen Graves brings technological acumen to help our process take advantage of the many ways this search can truly be of a new millennium. Greg Gonzalez acts as our link to the Vestry, while Maggie McCartney provides continuity from the Profile Committee. Anne and Linda Wilson will be helping with hospitality, Maggie and Judy with correspondence. Emily Cox will help as Treasurer. Greg and Jamie will compile interview questions as they are developed. Kris York is a very actively supportive alternate. Were learning how the Spirit is guiding us along with everyones unique perspective and talents. We will be posting our names and photographs in the Parish Hall so you can recognize who we are. We will do our best to represent the wishes of the Parish in all we do, so we welcome your questions and suggestions. We just ask that you also respect that our process involves some very personal and private information; if we are less than forthcoming, it is only out of respect for everyones privacy. May the HolySpirit guide us all on this journey. Your prayers and support are truly valued. Blessings to you all this Eastertide. Your Search Team

The Interim Rectors letter to the Trinitarians May 2011 Dear Friends in Christ, Alleluia! Christ is risen! is the opening acclamation of our worship for the Easter Season. And the response of the people is The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia! The tone is set from the opening acclamation--not only for our worship, but for our Life of Resurrection in Christ. This sounds like a good thing and something we all may say, but I am not sure that we live it fully or always recognize what it means for a believer of the One who was raised. Fr. Bert Anderson relates this New Life to our ministry of Stewardship in thinking that as stewards of Gods creation we greet each day as being rich with newness and possibilities. I kind of like that way of talking as we deal with the environmental issues that confront us in this 21st century. As a young boy in a family with two sisters I had certain chores that were mine and mine alone. One was taking out the trash. When we were all at home, our family of five had a full trash can in the kitchen every day. One big trash can full of everything no longer needed--wet stuff, the Sunday paper, cans that held the green beans from the night before and everything--some too gross to think about. It never crossed my mind that as an adult I would be separating the garbage into garbage, recycling, and even some things that could be reused before the trash was placed outside. I would never have thought that taking my reusable grocery bags would be part of weekly trips to the store. Life has changed. As a person of faith it is important to care for the world we live in and understand that there are limits to landfills and city dumps. We need to examine things carefully and reuse what we can before putting things in their final resting place. Large corporations are seeing this need, although I doubt if the bottom line of their choice is faith based, but who am I to say? Our world can be a better place if we all take seriously that we are cocreators with God in this place and this time. Does this not relate to love your neighbor as yourself? Maybe my neighbor is the next generation that will have to live with what I leave behind. Maybe my neighbors are those who live in the next state over and receive my throw away stuff in their landfills. Such is a whole new concept when we start thinking about the environment and the simple and complex picture. The season of Resurrection is a time for renewed thinking and doing when it comes to the environment. In one of my interim parishes the administrator proclaimed that the church didnt have to recycle--the local laws didnt require it. She also stated that her family didnt worry about that stuff at her home and didnt think we needed to at the church. The vestry disagreed and with some resistance we brought about a plan for recycling that we found out actually saved us money. In turn, the trash hauler gave us a credit that had been lost over many years. So whether or not there is financial gain in taking care of where and how we live, when we do, the Gospel is proclaimed and our neighbors are loved. May we proclaim the love God brings to the Easter Season and share it with all our neighbors. Peace, John Goddard Interim Rector

An invitation to come alongside the Search Committee

We invite each of you in our parish to join and support us during this time when, as The Vestry Resource Guide so beautifully puts it, The work of the committee (and the Vestry) is not to hire a new rector but to listen to the Holy Spirit and recommend a call to a final candidate. Of course, as the update by Jamie and Judy describes, we will be diligently working on all aspects of the search. But at core, we are trying to deepen our spirituality, individually and as a group. By becoming more aware of Gods presence in our lives and in our work together, we will be drawn to the priests in our search who can accompany and shepherd us into Trinity's vision and God's call for us as a parish. Please join us: Pray daily for us by name. Ask that we grow, individually and as a group, more deeply into God's heart and into the wisdom and clarity we need. Ask to deepen your awareness of Gods presence in daily experiences, and in the life of the parish during this time. If you would like a contemplative practice to help you do this, let me know and Ill gladly email you a copy of The Ignation Awareness Examen, which our search committee is also using. Ask to become aware of your gifts and abilities, the places in your spiritual journey where you come most alive, so that a sense of your ministry in this parish becomes clearer. Read and spend time with the beautiful and comprehensive Profile which has been given to us and ask prayerfully, Based on who we are in our visions, goals, and descriptions of the rector we desire, what is the call of God for this parish? As you get inklings, or are drawn to particular parts of the Profile, talk to one of us about what you are discovering. Ask the Holy Spirit to be drawing toward us the priests who can accompany us into our call as a parish, and also ask the Spirit to prepare us to meet them. Pray for our Vestry, for Neysa Elgren, Canon for Congregational Development, and Bishop Michael, all of whom are deeply involved in calling a priest to Trinity. Jan Richardson describes the life to which we are called as: one that is as simple and complicated as opening our eyes to the presence of God who is always with us, opening our hearts to receive the wisdom that God has to offer us, and opening our hands to participate in the healing of the world. (167, In the Sanctuary of Women) We both need and are deeply grateful for the ways in which each of you is accompanying us in this process. Nancy Linton, Chaplain to the Search Committee [The Search committee includes Judy Clinton and Jamie Hutchinson, cochairs; Emily Cox, Greg Gonzalez, Colleen Graves, Maggie McCartney, Anne McCollom, Russ Otte, Linda Wilson, and Chris York, alternate.].

I am Fed, therefore I Feed

[First in a series of how individuals deepen their faith and belonging at Trinity and ways they respond as stewards] Doug and Jean McDonald are 11-year members of Trinity. Doug has served on vestry, on stewardship, is an active member of choir and a Eucharistic minister. Employed as a technical writer for a software company in Medford, hes a golfer, grape grower and home winemaker. Jean currently serves on vestry, teaches Godly Play and serves as an usher. She has had Stephen minister training and been an involved member of Trinity since their arrival. She is a newly retired 5th grade teacher who currently substitute teaches in Medford and is a trained CASA. It took us time to find the place in church where our heads and hearts are fed well enough that we wanted to give back. This may sound selfish, but its who we are. We both feel the need for connections that keep us involved in that most positive of ways, honoring the best that God has given us. We connect with teachings about the God-given gifts we possess and how it is only right and good and a most joyful thing that we offer up those gifts in service to and celebration of our God. Trinity Episcopal Church feeds us multiple ways. For Doug it is by providing a safe and caring place to share some of those humble gifts in our worship services in the form of singing, reading lessons and being a Eucharistic Minister. These activities keep him not only busy, but more importantly they keep him positively involved. For Jean it is the joy of spending time with the Godly Play team and our youngest Episcopalians as well as greeting and welcoming people when ushering on Sunday mornings. As a vestry member she feels humbled and blessed to be a part of our governing body. It is this life-giving involvement, this giving and taking of time and talent, that enables us to give back some of our treasure. Money is really just another gift that we gladly return to Trinity, to keep the mechanics going. After all, it is just the economic gift God has blessed us with that we are happy to return. As we hear more about giving, and taking, we invite you to examine how Trinity feeds you. Are you fed? Are you blessed? If yes, even if only modestly, we further invite you to expand your involvement in those activities at Trinity that feed you. When we are fed its easy to feed the church. We hope you can find your own involvement at Trinity that feeds you enough to make feeding Trinity Episcopal Church easy for you. Doug and Jean McDonald

Coming in maychoir cabaret Adult Forums for May

May is the celebration Mothers Day and we will join this celebration on May 8 as the Adult Forum takes a look at three important mothers in our lives; Our Mother, Mother Church and Mother Earth. Are there any connections with these three important Mothers? Join this journey into the spiritual nature of Mother. Then for the next two weeks we will look at the worship at Trinity. The Worship Team is working on what is called an Instructed Eucharist to be held during the Easter Season. This is a time when we put our worship under the microscope with the explanation of the various parts of this central act of worship of the parish. Along with this celebration of the Eucharist on May 22 the Sunday Forums will look at our Episcopal Worship on May 15 and May 22. The two weeks will focus on The Holy Eucharist / The Word of God on May 15 and then on May 22 The Holy Eucharist / The Holy Communion. This will give us time to explore in a deeper way the whys and where fors of our worship. The Liturgy, which is the work of the people, doesnt just follow the Book of Common Prayer but is planned and brought to life by many people starting with the Worship Team. These forums will honor those ministries and look at the wide variety of options for a celebration of the Holy Eucharist. There is no Adult Forum scheduled for May 29, Memorial Day weekend. Trinitys Adult Forums Mark your Calendars for Saturday, May 21st for the one and only Choir Cabaret with the Trinity Choir! Our entertaining evening with performances by our very own choir members will begin at 7 pm at Trinity and well be celebrating with cookies, candies, cheese, champagne, & cider! Rumor has it that some Gilbert & Sullivan and maybe a pirate or two may make an appearance! Tickets are only $15 a person and will be available for sale starting Sunday May 1St after the 10 am services or in the parish office during the week. Need a ride? Invitation to read the memoir of a 21st century Christian

Please join me in a discussion of the book: Take this Bread by Sara Miles. She is a deacon at St. Gregory of Nyssa in San Francisco and the Director of the food pantry. Her conversion and experience of Jesus call us to think about how we act in the world. But this is my belief: that at the heart of Christianity is a power that continues to speak to and transform us. As I found to my surprise and alarm, it could speak even to me (p. 10). This book led the congregation at St. Marks, Medford to take action in their community and has other congregations thinking about liturgy and action. We will meet in the parish library on May 5 and 12 from 5:30-6:30. The book is available in paperback and I have one copy to lend. Please feel free to invite those from the community as well who might be interested in this book. Sara Hopkins Powell

Your VESTRY
SENIOR WARDEN Mindy Ferris (2011)

Senior Wardens Report

By the time you read this it will be well past Holy Week and Easter. But as I write this I am still feeling stunned by the emotional roller coaster of Palm Sunday. Wasnt the music incredible? What I want to tell you about is how it feels for me to be part of the Trinity choir. Eastertide is a particularly meaningful and exciting time for the choir. Our goal is to enhance the congregations experience of the liturgy. I dont think I have ever felt that more than on Palm Sunday. First there was the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem: Ride on King Jesus, ride on. Then the anger and sorrow of the crucifixion story, punctuated by the beautiful Tenebrea anthem: Father, father, why have you forsaken me? I have never felt the full emotional impact of the liturgy as I did on this day. Because of Paul Frenchs excellent leadership I felt so prepared musically that I was able to enter into the story of the music and actually feel the congregation make the journey as well. It was such a powerful experience for me and I hope for you as well. More times than not the music makes me think more deeply about the liturgy it makes me feel the liturgy. Thats why I often have tears in my eyes as I sing. It is a meaningful and joyful experience to stand before you on Sunday and sing my heart out. I love it. Thank you for making it possible. JUNIOR WARDENS REPORT

Our beloved church, parish hall, classrooms and offices always look so clean and neat. That is not without considerable effort from our Sexton Jacob Wyatt. Jacob has been our Sexton since 2008 and we are so grateful for his dedication and good work. I thought you might like to know a little more about Jacob, the man behind the scenes. Jacob was born in Boulder, Colorado and raised in Big Rapids, Michigan. After some college he joined The Foundation for the Law of Time. This was founded by Jose Arguelles and is based on the formula that energy factored by time equals arts and that your body calendar must be in timing with nature. He traveled all over the US for the Foundation for several years and that is how he found Ashland. In 2004 the Foundation opened an office in Ashland and Jacob jumped at the opportunity to locate here as its operations manager and several other responsibilities at the Foundation. In addition he became our Sexton. In 2007 Jacob married Kelly Harding, a graphic designer originally from Venezuela. Pix and I frequently run into them around town and they are a delightful couple. We are looking for a backup for Jacob so he can take some time off on occasion. If any of you know of someone who is willing to fill in on occasion please let Huberta or me know. Jacob is usually at Trinity when we are not and that is his secret to getting his work done. If by chance you do see him about, please introduce yourself. Tell him how much we appreciate his dedication to our beloved Trinity. We are so very fortunate to have Jacob, a fine young man, as part of our Trinity family as our Sexton Milt Morgan, Junior Warden

VESTRY HIGHLIGHTS
April 20, 2011 Mindy announced that the Parish Profile has not only been approved by the Bishop but approved with kudos for an excellent job. The Parish Picnic, in celebration of Trinity Sunday, is June 19 this year. Organizers, chief cooks and bottle-washers for this festive event are Rhonda Loftis, Kathy Griffin, Mindy Ferris, Jeff LaLande, Tom Harrington, and Ward Wilson. For the 2011 Diocese Convention in October the Vestry approved the following delegates: Anne McCollom, Kathy Griffin, Carol Harvey, and James Johnson. Discussion took place regarding the need for a detailed building use policy as more outside groups request rental of Trinity buildings. Mindy will pursue legal advice through the Diocese before Vestry can make a decision. It was announced that the new Trinity website is set to be up and running by the Easter weekend and that the Parish Profile will be accessible at the website. Also, 2 bound copies of the Profile will be available in the Parish Library. Phyllis Reynolds, Clerk of Vestry

Rectors Schedule over the next couple of months

As any priest of the church is not only involved with the ministry within the parish, our interim rector is involved outside of Trinity and this will take him away on several different days each week in May and June. Also noted is the complicating factoring that Fr. Johns is only threequarter time as agreed to when he started last fall. During May John will be away the first week of the month and then the next week will be attending clergy conference with the clergy of the diocese for three days. Later in the month he will be away attending the Alumnae Council of CDSP, the Episcopal seminary in Berkeley, CA. Then the last week of the month he is again gone on one of those quarter-time away weeks. June is taken up with time for continuing education as John attends the Interim Ministry Network conference in Nashville, TN. One side note John is leading a workshop on Stewardship, entitled Stewardship --What are we afraid to talk about? Guess this is a concern for many parishes? John will then be away for most of the rest of the month on either his quarter-time time away weeks or vacation. Please know that the leadership of the parish is on top of things and all priestly ministries are covered for this time.

Worship Team Update

The Team met on the First Thursday of April and continued its practice of looking at the current liturgical season with an eye for what is working and what may need to be adjusted. The readers theater style of reading the Gospel on three of the Sundays seemed to work with the very long gospels. This method will not become the pattern of reading the gospel but did seem to enliven these gospel readings for the understanding of the congregation. Next came an intense look at all the details of the upcoming Holy Week and Easter celebrations. The schedule is the same as last year and only minor adjustments to some of the liturgical practices of the parish from previous years. The Easter Vigil will begin at 8 PM on April 23 with the celebration of baptisms and the first Eucharist of Easter. Both Eucharist on Easter day will feature the choir of Trinity. During the Easter season the parish will be using Rite II from the Book of Common Prayer for all Sunday worship. The contemporary Lords Prayer will be used for this season. And we will use Eucharistic Prayer D at the 10 AM worship time, which gives full use of the variety of prayers for the Great Thanksgiving within this liturgical year. Plans are under way for summer worship with a full slate of Trinity Wise Guys, Deacons and visiting clergy covering when the interim rector is out of town. The psalm will be sung with a cantor each Sunday leading the congregation. Thanks to all for their work in this important ministry of coordinating the worship life of the parish. Chris Bogh joined the WT, which extended an offer to anyone on in the parish to join in this work. The next meeting will be May 12 at 6 PM in the Library. In an email exchange after this meeting a discussion about keeping the communion rail open during all consecration prayers, The Great Thanksgiving lead to a decision to leave it open until after the prayer of consecration and having the ushers close it as the people come forward to communion. This removes any barriers to the Lords Table while the People and Clergy make Eucharist. Trinitys Worship Team Sunday after church, a Mom asked her very young daughter what the lesson was about. The daughter answered, "Don't be scared, you'll get your quilt." Needless to say, the Mom was perplexed. Later in the day, the pastor stopped by for tea and the Mom asked him what that morning's Sunday school lesson was about. He said "Be not afraid, thy comforter is coming."

Bert andersons New play Additional drivers needed for food and friends
For years many Trinitarians have delivered meals to those who need our assistance. Their devotion to this important Outreach project is much appreciated, but we are always looking for additional drivers. This program is provided to those who are 60 years and over and homebound. Most clients have a long-time need for the meals but some are recuperating from a hospital stay or a bout of bad health and require the service for a few weeks. The hot meals are picked up at the Senior Center near Walker School and delivered by volunteer drivers from Trinity on Monday mornings from 10:30-12 throughout the year. The signup schedule is posted in the Parish hall next to the Library door and drivers are needed for June through December. Speak to those who have been driving and discover how easy and rewarding it is to provide this service to our community. Contact Stewart and Anne McCollom or Maggie and Tim McCartney if you have any questions. Thank you! We have among us among our retired priests an accomplished playwright. Heres the story: Justin went to his Bible Church on Sunday mornings. At night he and his friend Nathan set fire to churches. The story of his arrest a year ago was the inspiration for Mr. Brightside and the Bonfire Nights, a new play written by Trinitys Rev. Bert Anderson. The more I researched the story, the more I saw parallels within my own life, Bert says. I was a good boy and a Boy Scout. I was the rector of a church that burned. Later I counseled boys in residential treatment and remember one young man who set fires. More personally, both Jason and I were taken from our mothers care at a critical age. The play, while fictional, tries to understand the reason young men like Justin commit horrific crimes, he said. The performance is directed by Janet Rodkey. Actors include Jon Cypher of Broadway and Hill Street Blues fame. Four students from SOUs Theatre Arts Department play leading roles. The performance is sponsored by Mediation Works, Southern Oregons Community Dispute Resolution Center. Performances are May 9 and 11, 8:00 pm, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Tickets are $15 at Paddington Station and Grocery Outlet in Medford. Part of the proceeds will go to Mediation Works. For more information see the poster in the Parish Hall.

Letter of thanks My dear sisters and brothers, I wish to thank you for all of the heartfelt and financial support I have received from you since my car accident last October 12th. I feel I would not have had the strength to carry on without the love and care of my church family. I continue to recover physically and financially but God is gracious and good, and has walked and sat beside me on this difficult journey. You will always have my thanks and I wish you all well on your journey as you seek a new rector. I have endured far too much change and emotional and physical upheaval too quickly since the accident and will not be journeying with you in your search. Trinity will always be my church home and I will return from time to time to see all of you, and hopefully rejoin you after your search is complete. For now and in the future, you will always have my heartfelt thanks and prayers. Love, Catherine Windsor

Diaper Drive
Food bank volunteers tell us that some of the most soughtafter items are diapers. We're all so used to donating food, we tend to forget that babies are people too and they have specific needs not often met by the giving community. So, we thought Mother's Day would be a terrific occasion to have a diaper drive. Mothers...babies...diapers...right? The needs are very specific. They must be disposable diapers (yes........cloth ones are more economical and better for the environment but it's against the law for cloth diapers to be washed at a laundromat...who knew?). All sizes are welcome, from new-born to toddler "Pull-ups" but the most requested are the size 4. Disposable diapers are not cheap (up to $10 per pack, depending on size), so you may want to go in with someone else and share the cost. We are told that Shop'n'Kart has the best price locally. There's also a need for baby wipes so that would be another option for you. So, on Mother's Day, May 8th, bring your diaper donations (no need to wrap them) to church and we'll see if we can't ensure those baby bottoms are kept clean and dry. Trinity parishioners always answer the call, no matter what is requested, and we thank you for everything you do for those less fortunate. The Outreach Ministries Committee
