Muhammad Jusuf Kalla was born in Wattampone, Bone regency, South Sulawesi, May 1 5, 1942.

He completed his education at the Faculty of Economics, University of H asanuddin Makassar in 1967 and The European Institute of Business Administration Fountainebleu, France (1977).
