PREFACE

The subject of my project the study in the depth of Titan market research on its market share, analyzing its competitors and to suggest the area of improvement and to understand service level of Titan products. It has been done with the purpose of improvement in the marketing channels and the distribution process, so that to increase the sales of the Titan watch as well as to satisfy the customers. Marketing distribution is one of the most important processes in the field of marketing. Recognizing the proper place of the distribution in the market and doing well for customers and retailers, retaining and motivating retailers, minimizing competition, and building up as a strong leader in the market in favor of consumers as well as retailers. Distribution may be confined to the area or may be with the other competitors. Therefore, both the area has been given profound emphasis in the project report.

TITAN WATCHES
Titan watch brand Titan is today the undisputed leader in the Indian watch market. Ever since it launched its first watch in 1987, Titan has constantly innovated with a range of styles and designs to suit different moods and personalities. By addressing a new segment, Dash!, the third Titan Industries brand after Titan and Sonata, will bring customers into the Titan fold at an early age. Titan Industries is a joint venture between the Tatas and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and was incorporated in 1986. Titan is one of the largest integrated watch and jewellery manufacturers in the world and today manufactures over 5.5 million units of watches and clocks and 1, 50,000 pieces of jewellery annually. Headquartered in Bangalore, India, Titan has offices in Singapore, London and Dubai. Its Singapore office handles sales and marketing for countries in the Asia Pacific region. The London office co-ordinates the pan-European management, marketing and distribution while the Middle East and Africa is centrally manages from Dubai. The advertisements changed but the memorable melody that accompanied them remained the most popular aural mnemonic for Titan. People remembered it fondly, associating it instantly with the watch brand that changed the face of the Indian timepiece market. Watches in those days were staid objects, more utilitarian than attractive. Good design and innovative technology were hardly priorities for manufacturers. Into this field stepped Titan Industries, a joint venture between the Tata Group and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, ready to rewrite the rules of the business.

Today the company, one of the largest integrated watch and jewellery manufacturers in the world and the world's sixth largest manufacturer of watches, has completely altered the way Indians view timepieces. State-of-the-art technology, excellent design abilities and innovative retail practices have transformed Titan's watches into lifestyle and fashion accessories. The company manufactures over 6.6 million watches every year and has a share of the Indian watch market that is more than three times that of its nearest competitor.

The establishment of Titan gave Indian wrists an object of beauty to sport. It also helped smooth India's entry into an elite club of only four countries in the world that have been able to manufacture all the components of an analogue timepiece. The brand went on to justify its presence at the top and prove just why it is so comfortable there. Very early in the game, Titan set the standard on every parameter of watch-making excellence. In terms of technology, the brand chose to work with quartz, a remarkable differentiation in an Indian market where 95 per cent of watches sold were mechanical. While the accuracy of the time displayed by Titan's watches is guaranteed, it is in the design and styling aspects that the brand's superiority has come to the fore. No other watch brand in the country has the depth and skills of the award-winning design team at Titan. The other big factor that makes Titan a winner is its tremendous range of offerings. The company had 350 different models at the launch stage itself, whereas other watchmakers, taken together, could come up with just 200 models. Consumers could choose from a range of watches, each different from the other in terms of looks, functions and price. The designers had designed the watches, bearing in mind factors such as the buyer's age and taste, and the occasion for which the watch was to be worn. The Titan watch collection now includes more than 1,600 designs, including the 3.5mm thick Edge, the slimmest watch in the world and one of Titan's standout innovations. Titan also launched the Sonata sub-brand for budget-conscious buyers; Fastrack, a funky collection for youngsters; Nebula, the gold and diamond-studded luxury watches; Steel,

aimed at executives, and Raga, created for the woman of today. The Titan brand also included decorative table clocks incorporating classic and contemporary designs. The act of shopping itself assumed the nature of an experience with the World of Titan showrooms, 175 in number now, which showcased Titan's concept of premium and sophisticated retailing. These showrooms, ranking among the world's largest network of branded watch outlets, serve as a promotional tool for Titan. The large crowds that throng the showrooms are proof of the level of customer satisfaction that Titan has achieved.

Appreciation for its product and brand qualities also came through several Indian and international awards. Titan was rated one of Asia's top 200 companies (and among India's top 10) from 1994 to 1998 by the Hong Kong-based Far Eastern Economic Review. In 2001, Indian consumers nominated Titan the 'most admired brand in India' across all product categories, in a first-of-its-kind survey conducted by The Economic Times. In 2003, Business World nominated Titan as India's 'most respected consumer durables company'. Titan has crossed domestic shores and is available in 30 countries. It has 2,500 dealers across the world, ranging from 10 in Brunei to 300 in Spain, one of the four European countries where it has a sizeable presence, the others being Portugal, Greece and the UK. Titan is also the leading brand of choice throughout the Middle East. Through the years, Titan has consistently pushed the envelope. Its focus on innovation, topnotch technology and customer delight has helped it better itself and raise the bar for itself and its competitors. The relentless Endeavour to innovate and to be worthy of the trust that consumers have in its products is the hallmark of the pioneering Titan brand. "Titan Industries is Indias leading manufacturers of watches and jewellery. Titan watches are a class apart in styling and time-keeping accuracy, and have a reputation for being classic, chic and quality products. Titan has a range of watch brands, each catering to a different demand segment of the market. Titan has nine popular brands namely, Edge, FasTrack, Nebula, Raga, Steel, Regalia, Bandhan, FLIP and Sonata. The Edge series is a brand of slim watches; it includes the Titan Ultra Slim which, at a 3.6 mm thickness, is said to be the slimmest watch in the universe. The FastTrack series includes hip and elegant watches which make a fashion statement about the user. These watches available in groovy colours include watches for both girls and guys. Nebula watches are a confluence of style and substance. These solid gold watches have straps of gold or leather and are embellished with gems and precious stones to provide it with the timeless look, which can bring a smile to any face.

PROFILE

Titan Industries, a manufacturing company, produces India's largest and best-known range of personal accessories watches, jewellery, sunglasses and prescription eye wear. The company was established in 1984 as a joint venture between the Tata Group and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation. It has grown to become the largest watch manufacturer in India and the sixth largest in the world. Started as a watch company, Titan Industries' main focus has been to increase the breadth and depth of its portfolio of product offerings. International labels such as Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss are now a part of its basket, along with Fastrack a brand targeting youth Pg. No.8

and the mid-range brand Sonata. The company manufactures more than nine million watches every year, has a customer base of over 80 million, and accounts for 60 per cent of India's organized watch market. In 2005, bolstered by the success of Tanishq - a range of premium branded jewellery the company launched its second jewellery brand, Gold Plus, aimed at the mass market. The company has recently diversified into fashion eyewear by launching Fastrack Eye-Gear sunglasses and prescription eye wear. Titan's manufacturing capabilities were leveraged into a new business unit called the Precision Engineering Division in 2003. Titan's manufacturing units of the watch and jewellery divisions at Hosur, Karnataka are certified under ISO 9001: 2000 Quality Management System standards and ISO 14001 Environment System Standard.

ACHIEVEMENTS
TITAN has won the AWAAZ Consumer Award 2006, in the Consumer Durable Category as the Most Preferred Watch of the consumers at the recently held Awards function in New Delhi. This was the second consecutive year that Titan won the Award. Tanishq bags the 'BEST STORE EXPERIENCE' award from the Platinum Guild International, London. ET's most trusted brands of 2004 - Titan Industries Limited ranled No.1 in the Consumer durables category for the year 2004, a survey conducted by Brand Equity survey of India. Titan Industries Limited was adjudged the most respected Consumer durables company by IMRB with the award sponsored by Business World.

The company has four main business units: watches, jewellery, eyewear and precision engineered components. WATCH

Titan currently has four main watch brands. The premium brands are Titan and Xylys a Swiss made watch designed to attract the highend market segment. The company has launched two sub-brands under the Titan umbrella; Titan Edge incorporates the world's slimmest watch movement and Titan Raga is a brand aimed at women. Dealer Requirement / Suggestion Regalias price range should be reduced around Rs. 3000/Fastrack Eyegear should be provided in Metallic Frame. There should be some occasionally schemes exclusive for the showroom. Packaging should be more attractive. They are dissatisfied in contribution schemes. Example Last year company charged Rs. 120 for flask and those flasks easily available in Rs. 108 to Rs. 110, in Dhanbad itself, and company was saying we are only taking 50 percent contribution.

ANALYSING
Market Place : Jharkhand. This area is mainly agricultural or rural area excluding Dhanbad and Bokaro City. There are 70 authorized Titan dealers, one Titan Showroom and one time Zone. I have visited over 30 dealers and both showroom and time zone. I have visited Dhanbad, Bokaro, Deoghar, Madhupur, Giridih, Dumka. Dhanbad is a big city but most of the part are under developed (like Govindpur, Nirsha, Chirkunda, Pandih, Kendia, etc.) in terms of basic infrastructure customer awareness, market penetration, marketing activities etc. Pg. Bokaro - Bokaro is probably the best one in terms of everything not just because of the fact that it has three major dealers (including Kamal Trading which is number one in all over Jharkhand) but more for the whole ambience of the town, industrialization, per capital income, mktg. condition and most importantly educational, environment which will definitely lead the mktg. opportunities. Deoghar, Dumka and Godda are more or less same in Consumer buying behaviour, marketing activities, purchasing power, infrastructure etc. but definitely I found Deoghar the most attractive one among these three: Quality: Quality of Titan is probably the best one in India. Movement is also very good one along with gold plating. It is also easily repairable in any area. Dealers and consumers both are satisfied of its quality. Critics Competitors The major competitor of Titan watch is none other than Titan industries Ltd own brand Sonata since it has low range in various models and the fact that this whole region is underdeveloped. Fast track has very poor market share because it is mainly designed for youth urban people and lack of awareness among the masses. Timex has relatively good market share in steel watch series especially in big counters and cities like, Dhanbad, Bokaro, these dealers go for the Timex because (1) it provides a long credit facility (2) Product range dealers margin and probably they want to be different from the small or middle dealers and also from the world of Titan. Maxima Maxima has its own market place especially in low range and plastic models. Citizen and other foreign brands are not doing well in this part. Local Brand I think the major challenges for the Titan is local brands like Sona, Regal, Romex, etc., these watches are cheaper, easily repairable and fits for both buyers and sellers, since it is the rural based area Pg. Marketing Activities There is not satisfactory amount of advertising and other marketing activities are being provided by the companies. Television ad is the standardized mode but there is no specific or regional ad. Hoardings and other mode of local advertising is lacking even in Dhanbad and Bokaro After Sales Servicing

After Sales servicing is not appreciable especially if we consider the fact that the kind of trust and brand image are associated with Titan. Product Price Gap

There is huge demand in the market for the gold plating watches in the price range by 100 1200 and rectangular watches with d/d, is the price range by 1200 15000. Distributor, dealer, relationship It is very much appreciable apart from few dealers most of the dealers are satisfied with the distributor. Titans spare parts are not easily available in cities like Deoghar, Dumka, Giridih etc. Titans watch counter which is provided to the dealers does make an impact on consumers mindset which ultimately helps in increasing the sales.

CONCLUSION
This area is basically not developed one and need to be penetrated by the company by doing some local marketing activities. Quality of watch are very good, after sales service needs to be improved. The major competitors are Timex, Maxima and other local brands marketing activities are good but not very much appreciable, it requires a bit of regional and local activities for the development of this area.

RECOMMENDATION
I would like share my opinion with Titan industries Ltd, after closely analyzing the market; I came up with some ideas which can be beneficial for Titan, The following important points are mentioned below.

Servicing:
After sales servicing needs to be on time generally it takes around 20 days. The main reason for the delay or not providing servicing in ideal or desired time is that the chain is too manual. There should be a direct link between dealers and service centre, so that time can be reduced. In every city, there should be one service centre having all the spare parts available all the time.

Marketing activities in Jharkhand:


This area is basically a rural area, excluding few cities like Dhanbad, Bokaro etc. Company should take use of local video advertisement and also in regional channel like etc. Wall painting, auto banner are also required for the market penetration in the rural area. In this region, there is hardly any hooding even in cities like Dhanbad & Bokaro. Company should provide hooding not just in cities but also in rural area so that market can be penetrated. The language should be in a manner which can be understood by the villagers. Titan should provide its Titan counter to every authorized dealer, companys counters make a positive difference in the mind set of customers, these counters also help in boosting the sales. Customers must be aware of Titan authorized dealers so that sales take place only from Titan authorized dealers and ensuring that customer are taking right quality. There should not be any consumers schemes in marriage (Lagan) period. Dealers have to suffer badly because watch trade basically depends on Lagan period.

Issues in making new dealers


(i). Before making any new authorized dealer, company need to analyze whether they are able to match the company standard or not, if these shops are old, how is their goodwill, customers service etc. It is fine that company wants to penetrate the market and expand its market share but for that company not loss its brand image, what I have observed is that by marking more dealer without proper consideration company is suffering indirectly like diminishing in brand image, customer trust and another thing is that bargaining is also getting started.

Diversify into Wall Clock Business

If Titan industrial Ltd. wants to diversify, it can go for wall clock business. Reason for going wall clock (1). (2). Since company is in watch trade, it wont be totally different business all together. (a). Company has already its marketing and distributor channel company can utilized it. (b). Company can also bring its ideas, knowledge & experience of watch business into wall clock which might be proved a competitive advantage. (3). (a). Presently there are only two major or players Ajanta & Samay in India and they are unable to satisfy both consumers and dealers. Most of the time these companies are unable to fulfill the market requirement. Pg. No.64

These companies also dont use proper marketing activities like consumer scheme, gifts, television advertisements etc. (4). There are also a scope in upper range segment clock like Rs. 1000 +. Company can come up with new attractive models and features like 2 years warranty on movements (Since no company is giving and it is not very costly).

Special proposal Titan Zone

Titan should come up with a tied up program with dealers. In every city there should be 2, 3 dealers depending upon the market place. It will be a contract basic program. Where dealer has to display around 80% of Titan products like Titan, Sonata, Xylys, Fastrack.
