Invasion of Poland
Kassidy Campbell

n On September 1, 1939 the brutal invasion of Poland by Germany took place. This affected the country very much. At least they have back up that they can count on. The military was not prepared at all for this invasion. They took a last minute draft so they would have enough defense forces. The military lined up on the boarder so they could try to stop Germany before entering. This defense didnt work out so well because Germany had the advantage. They came with more than 2,000 tanks and 1,000 planes. They should be thankful for the higher power coming in and taking over, Katherine Keller, a Nazi, said. They also had the advantage because the industrial revolution came late to Poland. They were blindsided and this was not to their advantage at all. They ended up taking over Poland and they were under their government and control. Continued on page 2

Continued from page 1 At least Poland knows that their allies are there to support them when we need it. Great Britain and France declared war on Germany after they heard about the invasion. The date they declared war was 3 days after the invasion on September 1, 1939. The invasion of Poland was said to be a gamble. Hitler thought this was just going to be an easy take over because he said that the leaders are indecisive. So he thought they were just making a peace settlement instead of war. Another invasion took place against Poland by the Soviet Union just 16 days later on September 17, 1939. The Soviet Union couldnt really do much because Germany was already taking power. All this war and invasion negatively affected the citizens of Poland. When Germany had control, stores were shut down. Everybody had to obey the commands from Hitler and adapt to the different styles of living. Jews were being deported to ghettos, Keller explained. This scared many Jews, causing them to find places to hide from the Nazis. There were rations on food so people could only take a certain amount of food, which made it hard to sneak food for Jews. The black market was a way we could get food for the Jews, Ashley Nistendrik, a storeowner, hiding Jewish family, said. Jewish shops were being closed down and Nazi soldiers would go around from home to home checking legal papers and making sure there were no Jews hiding. Food and clothes were hard to find with these shops closed. Germany had control of Poland from September 1939 to January 1945. They went through all this torture for 6 years. This affected everything going on in the country because Germany had all the control no Polish leaders could even say any ideas.

How People Felt About the Poland Invasion

Monika Asomugha

Since the invasion of Poland, many everyday people and even soldiers fighting in the war have been affected. Since September first, when Germany invaded Poland, many people have been killed because of the hate Germany has against Jews. A man named Nate, from Poland, believes that everything Germany is doing to Jews is wrong. Since he is helping two of his Jewish friends he says, I dont feel safe because there is a death penalty for helping Jews. He believes that he should help his friends until the invasion is over, even if he may get killed. He knows that helping them is the right thing to do. Hes just hoping that eventually people will attack Germany and defeat them. Aaliyah, a soldier stationed in Germany thinks that the invasion of Poland only happened To make them stronger and use the weak for practice, so they can beat the strong. Aaliyah believes that Germany wasnt thinking when they invaded Poland. She also believes that Germany will take a stronger opponent and take over if no one stops them. Shes affected everyday by the sound of bombs and watching innocent people get killed. Nate, the everyday person in Poland, believes that Germany is wrong. He knows that the invasion is only going to turn out horrible for everyone. He is afraid for his friends and afraid if he will get killed. Aaliyah is also afraid of what Germany will do next. She sometimes feels like the Nazis may try to get her. She knows of few reasons why Germany would do this, but still feels what Germany did wasnt right. Aaliyah says, I think Germany may have invaded Poland to hold off any war with America. Either way they tried to get stronger, but only took the wrong turn. Either way, the invasion of Poland has not helped anyone other than Germany. This invasion has started the war and millions have died already. Germany will get stopped, says Nate. Hopefully he is right.

This week a member of the Gublin community died. The community knew Roberta Estevez for her excellent quilt making and her suit and clothing tailoring. Ms. Estevez was of Jewish decent but did not openly practice the religion. She was violently beat to death by a member of the Gestapo because they discovered they had Jewish ancestors. Ms. Estevez had a family but her husband died of a heart attack some six years ago, her son serves in the polish army, and her daughter lives in America working for a telecommunications company. She was much loved and will be missed by this community and her legacy lives on through her custom made quilts and her workshop that is now owned by her employees. Roberta lived to be fifty-five years old.

Many People Concerned of this Becoming a Great War

Two weeks ago, on September 1, 1939 Poland was invaded by Germany. Within hours of the attack, England waged war on Germany for invading Poland. But the question many citizens of Poland and other countries are asking is: How long will this war last? By this time, many Europeans have heard of the incident Kristalnacht, causing many Jews to go into hiding in both Poland and Germany. This week journalists got the chance to interview a Polish store owner that is hiding a Jewish friend. Sammy Komineriek, Sammy says Hiding refugees can be very difficult. However with people giving the S.S. the whereabouts of individuals in hiding and the Gestapo raiding suspicious houses, this may make it even more difficult to save her friend. I will hide my friend as long as it takes. Sammy says optimistically. Also interviewed was a Nazi soldier stationed in France. Hitler is a very strong leader, and he should rule the rest of Europe for the greater good, Katherine says. With Hitler gaining land fast and many Nazis like her Hitler could very well give Europe and the rest of the opposing countries a run for their money. Hitlers ultimate plan is to eliminate all Jews of Europe and if people hide their friends this will prolong the war, causing more countries to take side. This will not help the situation it will only add fuel to the fire. Although it is the moral thing to do, think twice before hiding your friend, because it just might make this war longer.

As we all know the NFL Championship Game happened recently. The two teams that were competing were the Green Bay Packers and the New York Giants. Both teams had a stellar season, bringing them thus far. It was a very competitive game. With over sixty-five yard combined in penalties and thirty-six pass attempts between both teams. While playing the Green Bay Packers set a few record, they were the first team to play a championship game ending in a shutout. The end score was Green Bay 27 and New York 0.

Intestable; \in-TES-tuh-buhl\
1. Not legally qualified to make a will, as an infant or a lunatic.

Ever since he was a child, Edmund was a leader. All the other children at school always followed him around the schoolyard and obeyed his commands. Because of this, it was no surprise when he was a leader later on in his life. In 1934, he joined the Polish border guard and quickly rose to the rank of Kapral (corporal). This was just after he married Anna Smith, an American visiting her Polish grandparents. By this time he was also liked and respected by everyone in his community. Unfortunately for him and all who knew him, the Nazi invasion changed that. When others turned and fled, he and his unit stood their ground, but he failed to save their country and their lives. He will be sorely missed and is survived by his wife Anna, and his son Feliks. 5

After the recent Nazi and Soviet takeover, Polands future is in doubt.
Nathanael Guinn

On September 1st, 1939, the Germans attacked the Polish army on the west side of Poland. Shortly after, on the 17th of September, Soviet forces took control of the east side. Poland is now split in half by these groups. On the Nazi side, Jews are being taken from their homes and sent to camps. The purpose of these camps is uncertain and the Nazi seem to be doing the save thing to all of its territories. Even for non-Jewish citizens, conditions have worsened, especially for those who are against the Nazis. A reporter for one such newspaper said, I have to be very careful to avoid capture by the Nazis because of my job. The reporter asked to remain anonymous for this same reason. continued page 8 Dear Needy, I can see why youre stressed with having to feed 6 other people and 3 pets seem like a lot! Continued from page 7 After Germany invaded and defeated the Polish army on September 1st, 1939 several orders were issued. On the following day, it was announced among other things, that the aid of Jews by any Pole would be severely punished and prohibited. For many citizens, conditions have worsened, as one man commented. He said, Before the war, my family and I were living well, but know I can barely afford enough to eat. Many citizens share this man's feelings, and a great deal feel that their new rulers are not treating them as well as the old ones. This may also be partly because of the many lives that were lost during the invasion. To the dismay of many citizens, no countries have provided significant aid to Poland. This is largely because of the appeasement policies of the US, Britain and other countries. Winston Churchill of Britain and Franklin Roosevelt of the US have commented that they hope that Hitler will be satisfied with the territories that he has conquered and they hope to avoid a war. Fortunately for the people of Poland, the international red cross has helped to provide some aid to those who now find themselves poor or less well off. 8 ~ Celina Contined from page 7 Instead of giving the normal portion size give half of that and maybe at the end of each week your family can have one big feast of leftover food! Rations are getting smaller every day, but just make a plan that can work for you and your family.
