When ancient man discovered a food which would keep through the winter months, and could be multiplied in the summer, it could be said that civilization began. He might have a reasonably safe store of food to carry him over, which would give him time to develop other useful skills besides hunting, fishing and cattle-herding. Egyptian The trade of the baker, then, is one of the oldest crafts in the world. Loaves and rolls have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs by archeologists. Wheat has been found in pits where human settlements flourished 8,000 years ago. At High 5 Bread Town Egyptian galleries you can see replica loaves which were made and baked over 5,000 years ago. Also on display are grains of wheat repened in those ancient summers under the Pharaohs. Ancient Egyptian word-pictures, or hieroglyphs, concerning bread are also on display. Iron Age Further back, in the Stone Age, people made solid cakes from stone-crushed barley and wheat. Millstones called querns are user for grinding corn has been found in archeological findings that is thought to be 3,000 years old. The ability to sow and reap cereals may be one of the chief causes which led man to dwell in communities, rather than to live a wandering life hunting and herding cattle.

Ancient Roman The ancient Greeks and Romans knew bread for a staple food, even in those days people argued whether white or brown bread was best. The Romans enjoyed several kinds of bread, with interesting names. there was oyster bread (to be eaten with oysters); 'artolaganus' or cakecread; 'speusticus' or 'hurry bread'. There was over bread, tin bread, Parthian bread. There were rich breads made with milk, eggs and butter, but these of course, were only for the wealthy and privileged people.

Vikings The Vikings, or the Scandinavians, are among the first to use rye make bread!! But the viking's bread are hard and unleaven because they don't use yeast. For ease of storage, the vikings made a hole in the centre of the bread, so they can be threaded through tent poles.

Georgian & Victorian Times Visitors would also be greeted by the "Earl of Sandwich". Millers everywhere continued to use the ancient method of wind and watermills, except for a few progressive men. In the middle of the nineteenth century, a Swiss engineer invented a new type of mill; abandoning the use of the stone mill-wheels, he designed rollers made of steel which operated one above the other. It was called the reduction roller-milling system, and these machines soon became accepted all over Europe and in Britain.

Industrial Revolution The Industrial Revolution reduced farm acreage. This, together with the invention of the roller-milling system, meant that for the first time in history, whiter flour (and therefore bread) could be produced at a price which brought it within the reach of everyone - not just the rich.

High 5 gets low marks for hygiene -by RAHMAN DAROS A BAKERY was raided yesterday for being dirty, employing illegal workers and using cooking oil without a halal certification. The raid at Stanson Bakery Sdn Bhd, which produces the High Five bread, at the Nilai Industrial Area, revealed that the floor was dirty. Some workers were also found working without gloves or aprons, while the factory was badly-lit and poorly-ventilated. The factorys management volunteered to close down for two weeks after it was chided by the Health Ministry team which also issued a warning to the operator for operating under unhygienic conditions under Section 11 of the Food Act 1983. Apart from that, seven foreign workers were detained as they could not produce employment documents while samples of the oil used in the bread mould were also taken. The oil, carrying the brand Dubur, is from Israel. The 2.30pm blitz was carried out by more than 30 personnel from the Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM), Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, Health Ministry, Islamic Development Department, Negri Sembilan Immigration Department, State Religious Affairs Department, Nilai Municipal Council and the police. Silver Bird Group Bhd group managing director Datuk Jackson Tan Han Kook said the hygiene problem raised by the raiding team was subjective. Its a minor issue. There were broken tiles at the factory and the management had not fixed it as it was an old factory. This is normal, he told The Malay Mail last night. Silver Bird is the parent company of Stanson Bakery.

Energy Requirement Eat Healthy, Stay Healthy A Word On Health From Prof. Dr. Fatimah Arshad

Knowing your BMI and your energy requirement

Most of us rely on weighing scale to tell us whether we have lost or gain weight. This is not the best way because it weighs everything including muscle, bones, fats and what we ate and drank that day. It doesnt tell you how much fat you have. In fact you should measure your body composition - the ratio of lean body mass and fat mass. Too much fat can lead to many health problems.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

While BMI does not reflect your body composition, it can be used to indicate whether you're obese, overweight or underweight. It is used by healthcare professionals to ascertain the general risk of health problems associated with your body size. You can measure your own BMI by using the BMI Chart which takes into account your height and weight. By knowing your BMI, you can proceed to ascertain your daily calorie requirement based on your lifestyle. Then, you can begin to change your diet to achieve your ideal weight at an ideal BMI of 22. | back to top

How to use the BMI Chart

Find your height in the far left column. Then, follow along the row until you come closest to your current weight (in kilograms). + Click on table to enlarge

Your BMI is the spot where your height meets your weight. | back to top

Your Daily Calorie Requirement

Once you know your ideal weight, you can now calculate your daily calorie requirement by following the Energy Requirement table below, based on your desired ideal weight and lifestyle. | back to top

Energy Requirement
Your specific daily calorie requirement depends on your level of activity. The more active your lifestyle, the more energy you need, and vice versa. You can easily

calculate your daily calorie requirement using this simple formula: Daily Calorie Requirement = Ideal Weight x Energy Requirement ENERGY REQUIREMENT (Adapted from H.Cole and R.Camerini-Davalos, Diet Therapy of diabetis mellitus. Med. Clin. North. Am. 54:1577, 1970) Example Height = 150cm, Current Weight = 70kg, Classification = Overweight, Ideal BMI Weight = 49.5kg, Lifestyle = Sedentary From the table above, your will find that an overweight person with a sedentary lifestyle requires 25kcal/kg. Therefore, your Daily Calorie Requirement necessary to obtain and maintain your ideal weight of 49.5kg is: 49.5 x 25 = 1,237.5 kcal per day NOTE: BMI guide is for persons aged 18 & above. Eat Healthy, Stay Healthy

Eating healthy doesn't mean you have to say goodbye to foods like nasi lemak, mee goreng or roti canai. With the right plan, you can still enjoy your favourite dishes as long as you have more healthy meals than less healthy ones. Just remember to exercise, get enough rest and practise a healthy lifestyle as often as possible. Dont wait till your health deteriorates and diabetes sets in before you make a change because prevention is always better than cure. So eat well and stay well with Gardenia Breakthru, the diabetic-friendly bread thats better for you. | back to top
