Question 3: How do we estimate the age of the earth? Age of the earth: 4.6 billion years By studying the rocks with the use of radioactive method = Mainly uranium, but there are other isotopes that works as well. The 2 elements that are examined are Uranium and Lead. We compare the elements to find out the answer because each element has a constant delay rate, so they works like a clock. Even though non of the rocks is found to be 4.6 billion years old, some were discovered to be nearly 4 billion years old. How do we know the age of the sun? I have read through many studies about the age of the sun. There are many methods that scientists use: 1. Luminosity: By looking at the energy that the earth's surface receive from the sun which is not difficult to measure. Then calculate the total life time. 2. Radiometric -Dating: Lord Kelvin- by examine with helium and hydrogen 3. Carbon-14 Dating: By taking a sample of rock from the solar system to study about the breaking down of carbon. From this they would know the age of the solar system and then would be able to assume the age of the sun. 4. Burning of Hydrogen: By see the amount of Hydrogen in the sun and rate which its burns However, there are still some other method that people came out with.
