Identify five components of data communication system Message - It is the information to be communicated such as text, pictures, audio, etc. Sender - It is the device which sends the data messages for example computer and telephone handset. Receiver - It is the device which receives the data messages. For example computer and printer. Transmission Medium - It is the physical path by which a message travels from sender to receiver such as wire, cable, radio-waves, etc. Protocol - It is a set of rules that governs the data communications. It represents an agreement between the communicating devices. Without a protocol, two devices may be connected but not communicating. 2. What is the advantage of distributing process? Quicker respond time as the processing power can get closer to the user which mean the data receive would be faster as well. Less cost as the shorter distance of the data transfer, its cost also reduce. Sharing of resources: by sharing resource, it is possible to share expensive resources such as high-speed, color laser printers, fast data storage devices, and high-priced software packages. 3. What are the 3 criteria of effective and efficient network? Equity Simplicity Efficiency 4. What are the advantage of multipoint over point-to-point? Point-to-point connection is limited only to two devices where multipoint connection can share a single link on more than 2 devices. Multipoint connection can be used for fail-over and reliability.

5. What are 2 types of line configuration? Point-to-point multipoint 6. Categorize four basis topology in term of line configuration. Point-to-point Mesh and star multipoint Bus and Ring 7. What are the different between half-duplex and full-duplex transmission modes? In half-duplex mode, the communication is on one side at the time for example Walkietalkie. In full-duplex mode, the communication is from both side for example cellphone. 8. Name the four basic network topologies and cite the advantage of each type. Mesh Ring Star - There is no gateway computer so each node can connect to each other and the - Each node has equal access and also capable of high speed data transfer. - It is easy to modify and add new computers without disturbing nodes can create their own paths through the network

the rest of the network. When one computer down, it will not bring the whole system down. Bus - Requires least amount of cable to connect the computers together. It is therefore less expensive than other cabling arrangements. 9. What is a factor that determine whether the communication system is LAN or WAN? The geographical area. 10. For n devices in network, what is a number of cable link required for mesh, star, bus and ring topology? Mesh- Required n(n-1)/2 links. Star- Required n links. Bus- Required n-1 links.

Ring- Required n links 11. What is an internet and What is the Internet? An internet is a network made of multiple smaller networks using the inter-networking protocols. While the Internet is the name, we use to call the system. 12. Why are protocols needed? Protocols are needed because the data send by network have to reach the destination through different network of different structure and platform. Protocol helps in order to make sure that the data can be send through these different network. 13. Why are standards needed? Standard is needed in order to provide a guarantee of safety, predictability and usability both in the real life and in network. Both receiver and sender must follow the rule or the standard in order to transfer data to one another. 14. What is the maximum number of character or symbol that can be represented in Unicode? 1,114,110 15. A color image uses 16 bits to represent the pixel. What is the maximum different color that can be represented? 2^16 = 65,000 16. If there are 6 devices connect in mesh topology. How many cable needed? And how many port are needed in each device? 15 cables are needed and 5 ports in each device. 17. Discuss the consequence if the connection fails. Mesh High redundancy. If 1 devices fail, the other computer can find another path to connect. Star If the switch or hub fail, then all computers are disconnect. Bus if 1 fail, it will be unusable due to the signal bounce in the affected cable.

Ring if 1 fails, then all fail. 18. You have two computer connected by Ethernet hub at home. Is it LAN, MAN or WAN? LAN, this is because the distance at home will be in range of LAN distances. 21. Draw hybrid topology connect star backbone with 3 ring networks.

22. Draw hybrid topology connect ring backbone with 2 bus networks.

23. Performance is inversely related to delay. When you use the internet, which of the following applicate are more sensitive to delay? Sending an e-mail is more sensitive than the others due to the high latency, then followed by surfing the Internet and copying file. 24. When a party connects the local telephone call to another party, is it point-to-point or multipoint? Point-to-point. This is because in multipoint connection, the data will transfer one side at the time where point-to-point connection has data transfer from both side. 25. Compare telephone network and Internet. What are the similarities and what are the differences?

The telephone network and the Internet are both networks, they both have ability to transfer data from origin to the destination. However, the telephone network is circuit switched and the Internet is a mixture of several technologies. Moreover, the telephone network uses analog signals that replicate our voice while the Internet uses 1's and 0's (digital) to interpret data.
