1.1 INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPANY: SOMSON EXPORTS is a garment manufacturing company.

It was established in the year 1992 and its a partnership firm. This company was started by three partners namely P.S. Ashok Kumar, P.S. Senthilnathan, P.S. Balasubramanian. This company manufactures T-shirts, inner wears. It takes various activities like cutting, dyeing, stitching, printing etc... It is engaged in the various functions like merchandizing, purchase, production, sampling, finance, finishing and Human resource. The competitors of this company are Balu exports, Allwin exports etc.. The garments industry in India is one of the best in the world. An extremely well organized sector, garment manufacturers, exporters, suppliers, stockiest and wholesalers are the gateway to an extremely enterprising clothing and apparel industry in India. There are numerous garments exporters, garments manufacturers; readymade garments exporters etc. Both in the small scale as well as large scale. During April-December 1999-2000, textile exports were recorded as US $ 9735.2 million (Rs.440179.4 million), of which readymade garments comprised nearly 40%. Interestingly, almost of Indias total exports goes to the USA. Indian readymade garments and textiles are extremely popular the world over. In fact, exports of readymade garments registered a 6.4% increase in dollar terms and an 11.6% increase in rupee terms during the period April-December 1999-2000, despite a sluggish growth in income both at home and abroad. Indian Garment export growth during April-June 1998 for 1oollen readymade garments was a phenomenal 150%, for readymade garments made of silk it was 58%, and for other readymade garments it was 39%, in dollar terms.

Today, garments exports from India have made inroads into the international market for their durability, quality and beauty. One of the reasons for the economical pricing of Indias readymade garments and apparels is the availability of highly skilled, cheap labor in the country. The superiority of Indias Garment Industry has been acknowledged in the National Textile Policy (NTP) of India 2000. Having realized the tremendous growth potential of this sector there is a proposal in the NTP for taking the Indian Garment Industry out of the SSI reservation list.

2.1 MERCHANDISING DEPARTMENT Merchandising is involved in the selection, buying and distribution of assortments of items to various branch stores, co-ordination and planning of sales promotion. The main objective of merchandising department is to create better contract between manufacturer and buyers.

2.2 PURCHASE DEPARTMENT

In this department they concern mainly purchase the yarn material. The yarn is the raw material. The requirement of the raw material is based on the technical view conducted by the production planning department. The purchase department gives the total requirement of the yarn for every order to fabric department for knitting merchandisers verifies the yarn based on the order plan. The parameters of yarn are checked.

Functions: Collecting the requirement details from the management review meeting sending the purchase order to the supplier who is specified by the customer. Preparing a purchase order is an important role of the purchase department. Mainly purchase order have to specify the Delivery date Quality Payment details Quantity

Inspection has to be made on the goods received from the suppliers.

2.3 PRODUCTION DEPARTMENT This department is responsible for manufacturing garments. The sample pieces are also made by this production unit. The company has the capacity to follow more than 1 order at a time. The process is carried out only after the order from the buyer. The production process is commenced only when the order is confirmed.

Functions: Receiving the order sheet from the merchandiser and scheduling the process according to the delivery date. The suppliers for the raw materials are also specified by the customer and the product managers have to analyze it after passing each stage there should be interval inspection. The acceptable damage details are specified in buyer manual.

Fabrication: Knitting us the process of constructing fabric with one or more groups of yarns by a system of inters looping of yarns. The yarns is converted to fabric from fabrication is made according to the diameter and gauge required and usually are 19 to 25.

Functions: Purchasing the yarn roles through the purchase department based on the requirements. Checking each roles width and weight of the yarn with the weight which is specified by the buyer. Checking the quality of dyed yarns.

Sending the finished fabric to the dying or any other section. Finally supplying the fabric to the production department.

Dyeing: The fabrics are dyed in the roll form in specified colours. The colours should be light or dark according to the order. Earlier Open winch dyeing process was used. Now modern soft flow process is being used in this company.

Printing & embroidery: After dyeing the fabric send to the printing or embroidery to enrich the garments. The cloth is printed according to the design specified in the order. Production manager

Pattern making:

The pattern maker makes the pattern according to the specification given by the buyer; pattern according to the specification given by the buyer: pattern making is very vital function in garments unit. Now the pattern maker can develop pattern directly on CAD and grade them. Spreading section: Spreading is a preparatory operation for cutting and consists of laying pieces of cloth. The objective is to place the number of piles of fabric that the production planning process has dictated to the length of the marker plan. Cutting: Cutting is the first step to convert the fabric into garment form during this process the fabric converted into cut pieces by using the patterns. Each part can be identified with stickers which the details of the color pot after the cutting, the set of cut pieces of all parts for 10-25 pieces, bundled together to be sent for stitching. Sewing: In sewing department fabric are joined together to form a complete garment. The company follows line production method far sewing. The operator sews one seam at a time and passes the fabric to the next operator for the next operator for the next seam. Machinery used in the sewing department are Flat lock Over lock General sewing machines.

2.4 QUALITY CONTROL DEPARTMENT To compete in the international market we have to keep up the quality. So its important to have a good knowledge of quality control procedures.

Functions: Controlling the quality of the products in each stage of production. The quality department should follow the quality policy of the company. Checking the quality of the products in each stage is the main function of the section quality controllers.

2.5 SAMPLING DEPARTMENT Merchandiser must co-ordinate with the sampling department in order to prepare the sample as per the specification given by the buyer. The samples prepared are sent to the buyer to get his feedback. Before starting the production the following sample approval has to be received from the customer to ensure the correctiveness on the bulk production. Sampling informations: Measurement

Receiving order: The orders placed in two types one the buyer may provide the samples and they provide their order. Otherwise the company provides the samples and gets order. If the sample and rates satisfied the customers they will provide order sheet which contains details of quantity, color, measurements and so on. Fit sample: The customers prefer to send the samples from the middle size to ensure and to prepare the measurement for other size. The result of the fit samples the measurements for other sizes proposed or will be confirmed in the measurement is proposed already. Sized sample: The samples need to be sent in all sizes using either the actual fabric or available similar fabric based on the measurement chart confirmed by the buyer, after the fit sample approval. The sample ensures the correctiveness of the measurement in all the sizes.

2.6 FINISHING DEPARTMENT: Pressing: Once the garments are checked carefully they are sent for ironing to remove wrinkles. A flat vacuum table with steam ironing machine for pressing is used during this process the steam beat pressure is applied on the garment together to avoid wrinkle on the garment and to have the better presentation. Here the garments are ironed according to the specification of the buyer. Then the garments are folded and packed.

Packing: Packing is mainly done here to safeguard the garment from any type of damage during transportation. Some may be packed in polythene covers and boxes and hangers packing according to the customer requirements. The packed garments will be finally placed in the customer bags. At this stage the boxes has the required shipping details either by printing or the sticker stuck on it, then the final inspection is made.

Functions: The finance department is responsible to maintain all the records. It helps the employer in knowing about

2.8 HR DEPARTMENT HR department is to achieve the goals of the organization as well as the goals of the individuals in this organization. 1. Employees committees: For each section there is a committee head and he/she is responsible for the problem within the allotted committee. He/she is not responsible to take any decision.

2. Recruitment: The recruitment can be done through the various sources like newspaper advertisement, crate hiring, unsolicited applicants. 3. Selection: The information about the employees is received through the application forms. It contains personnel data. 4. Promotion: Merit based promotion will be made by the general manager and the HR manager. 5. Training: If any changes in new technology then the operators should be trained with known person. 6. Health & safety: For healthy & safety the requirements are cleanilinesss, drinking water, disposal of waste, temperature dust and so on. First aid box and first aid trained person in each section, emergency way & alarm in all the floors. Strictly they prohibited the child labour. 7. Usages & salary administration: The employees get the salary at every week end. The ESI and PF are calculated by in charges based on purchasing card system.

3. CONCLUSION The Industrial training program, which I undertake at Somson exports , has been very much useful to me. I was indented to all the activities took place in the industry. The information gathered by me in this institutional training rendered a huge amount of experience that helps me for studies and could improve my knowledge. From this institutional training, I am able to understand the motives of the industry and the way by which they have been following to achieve their motives. The industry training has aided getting a very good idea about the production which is more useful then theoretical study. The study has enlightened me in the area like the various functions of the

organization like purchase, production, sampling, merchandising, finance, Finishing and Human resource. Thus I conclude saying that the field work I undertook has given me through knowledge in all the aspects.
