Section B
You are advised to speand about 30 minutes on this question.
Read the passage and answer the question that follows.

Thunder is the sound that lightning makes. This sounds simple but we
need to know why does lightning make a sound. Any sound you hear is made
up of vibrations, and the vibrations travel through the air as waves until they
reach your ear. This means lightning must cause some vibrations.

Lightning is a huge discharge of electricity. When lightning strikes

huge amounts of electricity shoot through the air, thus causing two things to
happen. The electricity hits the air and starts it vibrating, and as you know,
anything vibrating creates a sound. The lightning is also very hot and heats up
the air around it causing it to expand. As lightning is very hot the air expands
very quickly and pushes against the air particles starting another vibration.

These vibrations are what you are hearing when you hear thunder.
The rumbling of thunder is caused by the vibration or sound bouncing off the
ground and the clouds.

We see lightning before we hear thunder because light travels faster

than sound. The light from the lightning travels to our eyes much quicker than
the sound from the lightning so we hear it later than we see it.

Section A
Last Wednesday it rained really heavily. By nightfall the electricity had
gone of due to the thunderstorm. We sat in our living room with candles as
our only source of light.
Ali and I decided to take a walk despite the rain. In fact, we loved
playing in the rain. Mother was not happy, but she allowed us to go. We
promised her that we would be careful and avoid the open fields. We ran out
of the house with joy.
As we were walking through the streets, I spotted the silhouette of a
man a short distance from us. He was acting suspiciously in front of Mr.
Simon’s house. The man was trying to break into the house!
We still couldn’t make out who the man was as it was really dark. Ali
ran home and told dad about the incident. Both came back and Ali and I
watched as dad moved in to apprehend the thief.
Just as dad caught hold of the figure, the electricity was restored. To
our shock, the ‘thief’ was Mr. Simon himself. We all laughed as Mr. Simon told
us that he had misplaced his keys on his way home. But he thanked all of us
for our concern with regards to his house.
