Necromancers are mortal practitioners of death magic, commonly referred to as necromancy. These men and women channel their knowledge of the arcane into manipulation of the forces of life and death. In calling upon this power, necromancers risk being consumed by it until eventually they join the ranks of the undead. A few of them even gradually take on the characteristics of the dead hollow eyes, shambling gaits, pallid and sunken skin, foul odors and so forth. Still, some necromancers are uncorrupted and are loyal to their respective factions, using their necromantic skills to help in any way they can. Most modern necromancers were trained by Kel'Thuzad and his agents in the Scholomance beneath Caer Darrow, otherwise known as the School of Necromancy, however, the origins of necromancy date back to the First War when Gul'dan's necrolytes developed the ability to raise corpses to serve as skeleton warriors in the Horde. The most experienced necromancers become in dark champions of the dead and vile bane of the living. Their undead creations terrorize the land while they ravage their opposition with twisted magic. The living fear their name and the dead flock to it. These necromancers live and die by their spell casting powers and their ability to command, create, summon and control undead. They improve these abilities even further, making sure their minions can defend them.
However, whatever the energy source of the different types of shadow magic, all have a common pattern. To a greater or lesser extent all types of shadow magic cause damage over time, affect the mind of the enemies, drain vital energies, allow to invoke and subdue creatures, have the ability to heal and in addition, all of them can be very dangerous for the caster, because sometimes require an extra cost of blood.
The necromancers in my opinion would be spell casters who are the leading scholars in the formation of life, death and undeath. So, their skills could be divided into three groups: life, undeath and death, each one with a particular function, as their specializations are developed in the following section (the names of the specializations are provisional).
Black Magic
This tree uses the magic schools of shadow and frost with the main objective of inflict direct damage, mainly at a single target. It also uses the magic of shadows as a tool for crowd control, to provide benefits to the necromancer and his allies as well as disadvantages to their enemies among other various utilities. On the other hand the magic of frost handles, in addition to inflict damage, to provide some protection for the necromancer himself.
The necromancer is able to achieve its objectives through even the most loathsome practices. These practices give it a great influence on the undead, exercising its authority over them and even allowing it to emerge servants from the remnants of the formerly alive, calling voracious infestations or spreading endemic diseases against its enemies.
Putrefaction
This tree uses the school of magic of nature to inflict damage, mainly over time and at multiple objectives through diseases or infestations. It also uses the magic of shadows to summon and revive undead creatures to attack the necromancers enemies.
The necromancer has vast knowledge that will allow it consume the energy around and play with the thin line between life and death. This way it can create life where none exists, keep it or destroy it at its will, so it is not very hard for it to help its partners to regenerate their wounds and empower them temporarily to win the battle.
Regeneration
This tree uses the magic school of shadow to heal, revive and support the necromancer's allies. Also, through various dark ruses, this tree can even change the flow of energy for the benefit of the necromancer and their allies.
