About the Competition 
Following the fantastic success of the Competition, we are delighted to be hosting the 3rd 
Annual INDEX Contemporary Majlis Competition 2011!  
 
At the heart of any Middle Eastern home, the majlis is traditionally the place where families 
meet and socialise with friends. The younger generation are now looking for an 
environment that celebrates Arab culture, but also embraces cutting edge, innovative 
design.  
 
INDEX is an international event with a strong Middle Eastern influence, so we are always 
keen to celebrate local culture and promote innovative design.  
 
 
It was through this vision that the birth of The INDEX Contemporary Majlis 
Competition came to be: 
 
¾ Over the years the competition has attracted great interest from attendees keen to 
see how senior designers approach such a challenge to deliver a modern‐day majlis 
from conception to completion 
  
¾ In 2009, Zain Mustafa of Zain Mustafa Design won accolades for his striking and 
colourful design space 
 
¾ In 2010, Rashida Rajkotwalla of Design Work Portfolio wowed the judges with her 
winning majlis, which captured the fluidity of movement whilst drawing inspiration 
from the literary arts and Bedouin culture 
 
Understanding the popularity of this feature, we have increased the participation from 
four to six contestants and look forward to talented interior design professionals to 
compete.

How the Competition Works 
Phase I (To enter the competition) 
About You 
° Simply send a brief personal biography outlining projects you may have completed 
individually or with a team. Local projects will obviously be an added advantage. 
° If you are participating on behalf of your company then send a corporate profile 
including a sample of projects that have been executed in the past 3 years by the 
company 
° Applicants must be a qualified Interior Designer or an Interior Architect 
 
About your concept 
° Send us a brief illustration of the concept design based on the criteria outlined in the 
section “Criteria for Entry” 
° Provide narrative, set layout and brief execution methodology with the concept 
design  
 
Deadline for submissions: 20th July 2011 for selection 
All submissions to be emailed to malinidean@dmgevents.com 
Applications submitted after the deadline date will be disqualified 
 
 
Phase II 
Initial Judging Process – 30th July 2011 
° The panel of judges will convene on 30th July 2011 to choose a shortlist of concept 
designs 
° Shortlisted candidates will be notified in writing on 3rd August 2011, confirming their 
successful participation in the final phase of the competition 
 
Final Judging Process – 22nd October 2011 
° The participants will have access to their room sets to their contemporary majlis 
from 8am on 20th October 2011  
° Your majlis room set must be ready by 10pm on 21st October 2011 
° The judges will visit your majlis room set from 12am on 22nd October 2011. The 
judges may want to speak to you during this time, therefore it is mandatory for you 
to be present at your majlis room set from 11.30am to 1.00pm

Awards Presentation 
° The Awards presentation:  4pm on Saturday 22nd October  
° Location: Contemporary Majlis Competition area on the show floor 
° The trophy will be presented by Paula Al Chami, Event Director for INDEX 2011 and 
members of Judging Panel where the overall winner will be announced.  
° All finalists will be there to receive their awards and certificates and be part of the 
2011 media photo opportunity. 
 

The Prizes 
 
All finalists will receive:  
A live display of your Contemporary Majlis room set at INDEX 2011 – an event that receives 
over 25,000 international visitors 
 
Inclusion in the Contemporary Majlis PR and marketing campaign pre, during and post 
show in local and regional press articles 
 
Trophies and Certificates for Shortlisted and Winning Participants for a memento of your 
contribution  
 
The winner will be part of the jury panel for the 4th Annual INDEX Contemporary Majlis 
Competition

3rd Annual INDEX Contemporary Majlis Competition 
 
Criteria for Entry 
 
What the judges will be looking for (Room sets will be judged on the 
following): 

1. Design innovation  
Create a design concept that is pioneering, innovative, inspirational, thought‐provoking 
and cutting edge 
 
2. Creative use of fabrics, materials and furnishings 
Create a design using original, interesting and innovative textiles, materials and furnishings 
which could be sustainable and are aesthetically pleasing 
 
3. Practicality and usability of the design 
Create a practical space that can be used for the purpose of the brief (contemporary majlis) 
taking into account the available space and height. Length 6m x Width 4m. Height 3m 
 
4. Does the design work as a whole? 
Do all the design aspects come together and work as a whole, fulfilling the traditional and 
contemporary requirements  
 
5. Is it a contemporary majlis?  
Ensure the design reflects the true understanding of a traditional majlis marrying it with 
cutting edge contemporary design whilst maintaining the important aspects of Middle 
Eastern culture

Criteria for Entry 
 
Dimensions & Scope (For the selected shortlisted participants): 
 
° Use all of the 24 sqm (6m x 4m) with 2 open sides ( x2 walls) free space provided by 
the Organisers, to design and decorate your Contemporary Majlis room set 
 
° Organise and pay for the sourcing of all products and materials needed for the 
creation of your Contemporary Majlis room set. Products can also be sourced from 
INDEX exhibitors (contact malinidean@dmgevents.com for assistance) 
 
° Organise and manage the decoration of your Contemporary Majlis room set during 
the Build‐Up period of  INDEX from 8am 20th October – 10pm 21st October 2011 
 
° Be responsible for the costs involved in designing, decorating and dismantling your 
Contemporary Majlis room set 
 
° Adhere to The Organisers’ Terms & Conditions during INDEX
