RARE II
Imperiled Plants of Colorado
Exhibiting in 2014
The RMSBA is enlisting our members to produce original illustrations of all globally imperiled plants of Colorado. Plans are
being made to exhibit these works in 2014 to coincide with the ASBA meeting in Denver.

Eligibility: RMSBA members in good standing, current with dues.

Subject: The official plant list will be posted on the RMSBA blog. Plants on the list are globally imperiled plants in
Colorado (G1 & G2) as provided to us by the Colorado Natural Heritage Program. Twenty-nine of the 121 plants were done
in Rare I; the list as been adjusted to reflect that. Any changes to the list will be posted on the blog.

Participating artists will be required to attend at least two “evaluation and critique sessions” which will be designed to help
artists achieve botanical accuracy and artistic quality. The sessions will be offered in September 2011, June and September
of 2012, June and September of 2013 and June and July of 2014. We hope to have a botanist and an expert in botanical
drawing provide guidance in each of these sessions.

Media: Two-dimensional original artwork in color on a white background in traditional mediums. Mediums may also include
colored pencil, acrylic and mixed media. All artwork must have a white background. No colored papers or backgrounds
allowed. Any natural elements or environment included in the painting should be site specific to your plant subject.
Sizes and Format: Image must fit into standardized frame sizes which are 18 x 24, 16x20 and 11x14. Formats may be
vertical or horizontal. The artist needs to add one inch or more margin all around the image size to allow for matting,
except in cases where elements of the composition are intended to extend beneath the mat.
Presentation: Artwork will be framed uniformly by RMSBA, costs to the artists will be available closer to the entry due
date.

Scale: All enlarged views must be clearly labeled with a bar scale.

Labeling: Labeling on the visible face of the plate is optional. In any case, the scientific name and artist name need to
appear somewhere on the piece to identify it, even if will not be visible when framed. Use the following reference for
scientific names used in Colorado: Weber and Wittmann 2001 (the Colorado Flora, East and West Slope, third edition).

Submissions: All works must be submitted for jury selection. The work will be judged according to the usual ASBA criteria
- artistic sensitivity, technical skill and botanical accuracy. Entries must be submitted digitally.

Further Information: In order to exhibit the greatest diversity of rare plants, and to avoid duplication, RMSBA is keeping a
list of plants artists have committed to portray on the blog. Artist’s may ‘reserve’ one plant at a time. There is no guarantee
that any specific artist or plant illustration will be chosen for the exhibition.

Contact: Please address all questions to the RMSBA blog for now. There will be an RMSBA meeting in June at which time
we will be soliciting committee volunteers. We need volunteers in many capacities, including someone to maintain the plant
list.
