History of the Solemnity of Corpus Christi
At the end of the 13th century emerged in
Liege, Belgium a Eucharistic movement
whose centre was the Cornillon Abbey
founded in 1140 by Bishop Albero of Liege.
This movement gave rise to several
Eucharistic traditions, like the Exposition
and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament,
the use of bells during the elevation in the
mass and the Feast of Corpus Christi.
Saint Juliana of Mount Cornillon, prioress of
the Abbey at the time, was sent from God to
provide this feast. From her youth, Saint
Juliana had a great veneration for the
Blessed Sacrament and always hoped for a
special feast in His honour. This desire is
said to have intensified by a vision she had of
the Church under a full moon with a black
spot; signifying the absence of such a
solemnity.
Juliana communicated these appearances
with Dom Roberto of Thorete, Bishop of
Liege and the scholarly Dominico Hugh, later
Cardinal legate of Netherlands and Jacques
Pantaléon, at the time, archdeacon of Liege
and later Pope Urbano IV.
Bishop Roberto was impressed and since at
that time bishops had the right to coordinate
feasts for their dioceses, invoked a Synod in
1246 and concluded that the celebration be
held the following year. At the same time,
the Pope ordered a monk named John to
write a letter for this occasion.
The decree is preserved in Binterim
(Denkwürdigkeiten, V.I.276), along with
some parts of the office.
Dom Roberto did not live to see the
achievement of his order, and died on
October 16, 1246. The Feast was celebrated
for the first time the following year on the

custom extended it throughout the present-
day Germany.
Pope Urbano IV, at that time, had the Court
in Orvieto, a little north of Rome. Very near
