What are Long Term Objectives?

Long Term Objectives describe what the organization wants to have or become at some
point in the future (usually 3-5 years).

o Because they are strategic in nature, they focus more on position to


be attained than on specific accomplishments.
o They define success at a point in the future, allowing you to work
backward and identify interim steps along the way.
o They take the company strategy one more step toward action level.
o They are visionary and broad in scope.
o Format: “to have (or become) (the result) by (year).

Validation Criteria for Long Term Objectives

o Are they measurable or verifiable?


o Are they flexible or adaptable?
o Are they consistent with the rest of the plan?

Key Results

Key results begin the transition into the implementation phase of the strategic plan. They
identify what will have to be produced or done along the way toward attaining each long
term objective. Key Result priorities are established for each long term objective and
overall. The overall priorities help identify what Action Teams will be started initially.
