Biogas basics
• Upgraded biogas &
Natural gas = CNG,
”vehicle gas” (in
Swedish)
Methane
• Biogas is the cleanest
transport fuel on the
market today
– Up to 180% reduction
of green house gases
(well-to-wheel)
– Reduction of other
emissions such as
particles and NOx

Setting the picture

• Energigas minskar oljeberoendet

Coal och belastningen
på vår miljö och vårt klimat. Biogas omvandlar
avfall till en resurs; el, värme och drivmedel.

The green gas concept
• Same idea as green electricity
• Allows end consumer to order 100% Biogas
• Distributer balance input and consumption in the grid
• New tax legislation from 2011 makes it possible to use the
green gas concept across differents grids

Gas Filling Stations 2010
• Today 119 public stations
• Today also 45 non-public stations
for fleets, busses and heavy duty
vehicles

• Number of vehicles:
26 000

Biogas potential from waste
in Sweden

• Today: 1,4 TWh

• Potential: 10-15 TWh
Total biogas potential
from waste products in Sweden
• Total potential: 70-74 TWh
– By digestion: 10-15 TWh (21 %)
– By gasification: 59 TWh (79 %)
New development
• Liquid biogas with cryogenic
upgrading
• Europe’s first public filling station for
liquid vehicle gas in Oct 2010,
Gothenburg.
• Volvo has developed a methane diesel
engine (dual fuel)
Government incentives for
biogas

• Climate program, 30% of investments in

biogas production and upgrading
facilities (2003-2008)
• 15 million Euro for biogas technology
development (2009-2011)
• 20 million Euro, 30 % investment, for
establishing farm plants for biogas
(2009-2013)
• 17 million Euro, 30% of investment,
filling-stations for renewable fuels (2006-
2009)
• A national biogas strategy 2010
Incentives for clean vehicles
• Low tax on natural gas, tax exemption on
biogas, means substantial fuel cost
savings
• 40 percent reduced tax for use of
company gas-cars or electric hybrids
• Free parking in certain towns (ended in
Stockholm, 2008)
• Congestion charge exemption in
Stockholm (no new cars since 1 Jan
2009)

• Clean taxi are given priority at Arlanda
