Bible Studies

New Sunday School Class – Sessions with Scripture

This class is open to all adults. Initially the class will study the book of Galatians, using the book
Sessions with Galatians. The class will study a book of the Bible for approximately 10 weeks and then
begin a new session with a new book from scripture. The class meets in room 214.

Study of the Gospel of Matthew Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm.

You are welcome to join in at any time – Each week we view a video dramatization of the NIV translation of
a chapter of Matthew and then discuss the scripture presented.

Men’s Bible Study Sunday evenings at 6:00 pm.

Gather with other men to study and discuss scripture together. For information, contact Frank Halbauer.

DEACON BEACON
With Father’s Day coming this month, it’s
important that we remind ourselves that God is the
model of the perfect father—a loving one.
While Christ died for you and me, it is also
true that He died for the Father. When Jesus died
on the cross, He died to meet the holy and just
requirements of the basic nature of God by
providing the solution to the problem of
humanity’s sin.
Josh McDowell tells of an incident that
happened years ago that illustrates this. A young
woman was picked up for speeding. She was
ticketed and taken before the judge. The judge read
off the citation and asked, “Guilty or not guilty?”
The woman replied “Guilty.” The judge brought
down the gavel and fined her $100 or ten days.
Then an amazing thing took place. The
judge stood up, took off his robe, left the bench and
walked down to where the woman was, took out his
billfold, and paid the fine. What’s the explanation of
this? The judge was her father. He loved his
daughter, yet he was a just judge. His daughter had
broken the law and he couldn’t simply say to her,
“Because I love you so much, I forgive you.
You may leave.” If he had done that, he wouldn’t
have been a righteous Judge. He wouldn’t have
upheld the law. But he loved his daughter so much
that he was willing to come down and represent her
as her father and pay the fine.
To some degree, this is what God did for us
through Jesus Christ. We sinned. The Bible says,
“The wages of sin is death (Roman 3:23).” No
matter how much He loved us, God had to bring
down the gavel and say ‘death’, because He is a
righteous and just God. And yet, being a loving
God, He loved us so much that He was willing to
come down off the throne in the form of the man

Christ Jesus and pay the price for us, which was
Christ’s death on the cross.

MOMENTUM NEWS
I really enjoyed, and thank God for,
the opportunity to lead a combined Bible
Study on May 18th in the Sanctuary. It
was fun for the adults and youth as we
all learned a little bit about our own
personal definition of love.
We are ramping up on our camp
preparations beginning in June with camp
focused Wednesday night teachings.
During this time, the chaperones who will
be at Passport camp with the youth will
be leading 4 consecutive Wednesday
nights with a focus on the Scripture and
guidelines for camp. It is important for
the youth to be attentive during this time
because we also have an annual event
called “Camp Jeopardy” where all of the
Scripture, lessons, and guidelines are
covered in a Jeopardy game show format.
The winning team is recognized annually
with a plaque that has each team
members’ name and is hung in The Hut.
As the time for camp draws close I
ask that each of us be purposeful about
praying, not just for Momentum, but all of
the youth that they may experience
Jesus like never before and choose to
dedicate or rededicate their lives to
serving Him.

Gifts to the Easter Offering for
Association and Virginia Missions
will be received during April and
May. Our church-wide goal is $4500.00 – with
60% of the total gifts forwarded to the VBMB
for the Alma Hunt Offering for Virginia Missions
and 40% forwarded to NABA to fund MISSION
IMPACT 2011.

JUNE – 27th thru July 1 - World Changers will be
here working on qualifying houses. Volunteers will be
needed to prepare and serve lunch at the work site.
Pray about your involvement and say yes when
asked.
There is still time to purchase food items for 31
homeless children attending Little Creek Elementary
School. Items requested can be found on the Missions
bulletin board. This ministry will cease when school
is out for the summer. Pray for these children and
their parents and this difficult time in their lives.

items to fill the shoe boxes that will be distributed
to local children in shelters at Christmas.

Ken’s retirement. Ken has
served Azalea Baptist Church
for 20 years on July 1.
We appreciate every thing that Ken has done
for Azalea and look forward to honoring him with a
covered dish luncheon following the worship
service.

VBS AUGUST 1 to 5, 2011
There will be a final VBS
meeting on Sunday, July 10. This
will be following the 11:00
worship service, with lunch provided.
We will be concentrating on the VBS scenery
and decorations at that time. Please call the church

From Sunday School
Are you feeling confused, alone or unsure about the
future of Azalea Baptist? Don’t feel alone; you have
a lot of company.
I truly believe that God has some amazing plans for
Azalea Baptist. It is up to us to discern what His
plans are. If we will be still and listen His plans will
be made known to us.
I do not know about you, but I am feeling both
excited and uncertain about what is to come. Will
you pray with me and for me? Will you work
together with me to learn God’s will in both our
personal and spiritual life, and also in the life of
our church family? If we all work together to seek
God’s will, rather than focusing on our own
wishes and desires, wonderful things will once
again happen at Azalea Baptist and we will be a
beacon on the corner of East Little Creek Road
and Camellia Drive lighting the way to the
Father and His Son.

BUSINESS MEETING

the resignation of Rev. Carol Seeley
as our Director of Christian
Education. Azalea Baptist Church
offers sincere thanks for the
leadership of
Rev. Seeley these past 18 months.

A motion was made and approved to
hire
Brian Barnes for a part time position
as Summer Interim Minister to Youth
and Families effective June 1
through August 31, 2011. We thank
Brian for all the work he has done
with the youth and welcome him to
the staff of Azalea Baptist Church.
