NSTP: Literacy Training Service

1st Semester, AY 2011-2012
Course Description Requirements:

Title: Literacy Training Service (LTS) course Each team of no more than four students should complete a set of:
 Twelve narratives (folkloric or historical)
Schedule: Mondays, 2p-5p, 27 June – 3 October 2011  At least twenty proverbs sourced from elderly informants, and submitted in
the following forms:
Concept:  audio files of actual sessions with informants
 verbatim transcription of the actual sessions
The Literacy Training Service under the NSTP aims to “train students to become  edited versions of the narratives and proverbs to serve as materials for
teachers of literacy and numeracy skills to school children, out-of-school youth, and teaching literacy, preferably with illustrations
other segments of society in need of their service”  Filipino translations of the narratives and proverbs, with notes on words or
idioms that are not readibly translatable
More pointedly, this pilot Literacy Training Service course in UP Diliman is based on  English translations of the narratives and proverbs, with notes on words or
the notion of a functionally literate person, drawn from the 1978 UNESCO General idioms that are not readibly translatable

 to contribute to the basic database on the phonetic and writing systems of Grading Criteria:
Philippine languages other than Tagalog/Filipino
 to initiate note-taking on the semantic and grammatical comparison of  authenticity of narratives and proverbs
Tagalog and other Philippine languages.  accuracy of transcription
 to develop a fuller appreciation of Philippine folklore and local history, and  rhetoric and discourse quality of the edited versions
how these are expressed in oral and written language  relative accuracy of the translations
 to develop interest in and appreciation of local languages  aesthetic qualities of the reports
