SOFTWARE PRODUCT ENGINEERING

Present Status:
Over 600 R&D centres in India employing 1,50,000 professionals.

The Potential:
To grow 10 times its current size and touch anything between US $9.5
billion to 12 billion, over the next decade.
- Som Mittal, President, NASSCOM

The Catalysts
- Mushrooming of IP-focused start-ups
- Increased partnerships with universities
- Increased R&D investments by MNCs & local companies
- Positive governmental policies

India: Opening Vistas for Engineering

R&D Services
India is now a major destination for Engineering Quest for Quality in Quantity
R&D Services; its growing depth & breadth of India produces a large number of engineering
services, large engineering base, and global graduates every year, but multinational find that
footprint with greater proximity to customer give it just 25% of them are employable! (McKinsey
a compelling advantage. Global Institute Study).

Bringing in Efficiency and Efficacy

Using product line approach, Cummins slashed
the cycle time for development of their Diesel
control systems across 20 product groups and
1,000 separate engine applications from 250
person-months to a few person-months.

SPE GROWTH DRIVERS

Growing Domestic Demand

From being purely driven by export projects in the past, the
Indian software product industry is now domestic demand
driven, along with exports, at an accelerated growth rate of
44%.

In FY2009, Engineering and R&D, offshore product

development, and ‘Made in India’ software products resulted in
15% growth in export revenues and US $7.3 billion mark
crossed in revenues - NASSCOM

Distributed Development and Collaboration

Creation of a global talent pool for software product
development across countries is enabled by advances
in communication and collaboration. This creates
efficient 24x7 development cycles for multinational
companies (MNCs) and simultaneously reduces the
dependencies on a single talent market.

SPE GROWTH DRIVERS

Technological Changes
Software product architecture is becoming increasingly
component-based out of reusable artifacts:
standardization in third-party components and
development platforms, combined with new tools that
support distributed project management make it easier
for multiple global competency centres to operate
around the world.

Availability of Venture Capital

Since the software product business requires significant investments
and it takes about 36 to 48 months to break even, availability of
funds is critical to drawing new entrants into the market. Venture
Capital (VC) funds are increasingly showing interest in IP-creating
products. Of all the investments flowing into the IT and ITeS sector,
the software product segment is claiming a bigger chunk of the pie
with each passing year.

SPE JOB OUTLOOK

In League with the Best

•The leading global software vendors such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft
having their large development centres based out of India. Microsoft and
Cadence have set up their largest development centres outside of the
U.S., in India.

• Domestic market for software products has grown at a rate nearing

40%, driving development of IP based products in India.

Tap the Entrepreneurial Angle

Besides the top 10 companies active in this space, which account
for 84% of the segment revenues, there are over 200 mid-sized
companies and start-ups that are contributing to the revenue pie
and catalysing the industry’s momentum.
