Hired with full responsibility to consolidate the Crop Health and Breeding Depar
tments acquired from Yoder Brothers, Inc. and move all programs to Syngentas Gil
roy, CA location. Managed 6 direct reports including scientists and plant breed
ers. $3M budget.
Successfully resolved bacterial pathogen issue:
Assembled and facilitated a cross-functional team to map the entire chrysanthem
um germplasm pathway.
Performed a GAP analysis to identify possible entry-points.
Developed and designed countermeasures to address gaps and eliminate risk of pa
thogen entry.
Presented and obtained approval from Executive Team for all GAP measures.
o Results: Successful pathogen exclusionary process eliminated any shortages due
to disease or loss of any varieties due to germplasm infection.
Successfully migrated programs, operations and processes:
Tasked to transfer all processes, lab equipment and plant germplasm to CA witho
ut disruption in certification or supply of tissue culture plantlets to operatio
ns. Developed transfer schedule for programs and equipment.

Worlds largest chrysanthemum producer. Produced azaleas, hibiscus, roses, poins
ettias, carnations, dahlias, asters, annuals and perennials. Global sales of $10
0M with 1400 employees worldwide.
GENERAL MANAGER (2006 to 2008)
Asked to again take on GM position with full leadership and operations responsib
ilities. Oversaw facility Quality Plan which measured performance in all functio
nal areas. Reported to VP Operations. Directed Managers of HR, Operations, Growi
ng, Inventory Control, Quality Systems, and Maintenance.
Developed improved process, performance, and productivity initiatives:
Company was closing SC. facility due to sales decline and reduced profit. This
facility housed the Nucleus Germplasm for the company on all product lines. Cha
llenged to relocate the nucleus without risking plant health status and maintain
certification status. Developed plan to retrofit a greenhouses to accommodate
nucleus material. Developed transfer plan that met all phytosanitary requireme
nts.
o Results: Successfully relocated nucleus without loss of plant material or cert
ification status.
o Results: Met all germplasm shipping deadlines.
Competitive suppliers of Mandevilla cuttings and rooted liners had continuous d
isease and reliability problems filling orders. Developed plan to put germplasm
through certification labs and develop certified stock program to support new p
roduct offering.
o Results: The first in the industry to develop clean stock program free from Fu
sarium disease.
o Results: Entered market with 1M units of new product sales for the company.

The R&D department provided entomology, pathology and horticulture support to al
l growing facilities and customers. Performed diagnostic service for identifica
tion of plant disease and insect problems.
Directed technical resources in support of Supply Chain business objectives and
problem resolution. Served on the Leadership Team. Reported to VP of U.S. Operat
ions. Direct reports included 4 Ph.D. level scientists. Managed operating budge
t of $1.8M.
Collaborated with Yoder, the USDA, APHIS and state regulatory groups. Developed
regulatory strategy for senior management. Represented company in working groups
with USDA and APHIS. Technical advisor for the start-up of a perennial stock fa
rm in Bogota, Colombia.
Developed improved process, performance, and productivity initiatives:
Company was keeping certified germplasm in pots in greenhouses. Developed tissu
e culture program for certified germplasm, storing nucleus material in vitro.
o Results: Saved $400K in expenses annually.
Developed certification protocols for perennials to support the acquisition of
Greenleaf Perennials. First in industry to have certified perennial stock. Devel
oped supply protocol to support perennial stock plantings in Bogota from lab cer
tified material.
o Results: Enabled moving certified perennial stock program offshore.
o Results: Reduced costs by $1M per year.
Developed testing and certification protocols for Agrobacterium tumifasciens.
o Results: First in industry to have method to clean infected germplasm from Agr
obacterium.

Promoted with full operations and management responsibilities for production gre
enhouse and field facilities. Managed operating budget of $6.5M and 85 to 120 em
ployees depending on time of year. Directed 6 Managers including HR, Operations
, Growing, Inventory Control, Quality Systems and Maintenance. Annual sales $8M.

Led cross-functional team in development of a New Product Development process.
Trained designated site managers in use of new Stage Gate process.

DIRECTOR OF RESEARCH (1991 to 1996)
Promoted with responsibility for development of crop health protocols for diseas
e and insect control including the development and use of germplasm certificati
on protocols and technical support for customers.
Led R&D group, reviewed all research requests and initiated research to address
supply chain issues. Collaborated with operations and facility management teams
to ensure all areas of the company were supported based on corporate business ob
jectives.
Challenged to control beet armyworm. Developed protocols utilizing an insect vi
rus. Grew virus in worm larvae, mass infected clean worms, then processed infect
ed worms into a per acre dose to spray on mum stock plants.
o Results: Effectively controlled for the next 6 years.
Identified and developed solution to long term rooting problem on hibiscus prod
uct line. Utilized heat therapy to clean hibiscus of virus and replaced stock wi
th virus free germplasm.
o Results: Solved rooting problem. Removed major reliability issue. Increased sa
les significantly.
Conducted value stream on mum certification protocols and timeline.
o Results: Reduced certification timeline from 21 months to 9 months.
o Results: Reduced unit cost and time-to-market for new varieties.
CROP HEALTH MANAGER (1986 to 1991)
Promoted with responsibility for Entomology, Pathology, Horticulture and Tissue
Culture/Certification. Directed 2 Ph.D. staff and budget of $900K.
Conducted research on use of parasitic nematodes to control armyworms. Develop
ed mass production protocol for nematodes.
Strategized logistics of using as a biological insecticide including storage, h
arvest of nematodes, and residual effects on crop.
o Results: The primary armyworm control until replaced with an insect virus deve
loped in the lab.
ENTOMOLOGIST (1982 to 1986)
Hired with full responsibility to deliver insect control programs. Managed budge
t of $350K and 2 technicians.
Developed use of entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema feltiae for control of B
eet Armyworm on chrysanthemums; developed production protocols for in-house use
of the nematode.
The use of Steinernema for control of Beet Armyworm was utilized for Doctoral d
issertation.
Designed an IPM-Integrated Pest Management program for primary crops. that uti
lized scouting, biologicals, indicator plants, and action thresholds.
o Results: Reduced pesticides by about 50%.
