The Power of Prayer

Wionare Mitimu from the Nankina language area in Papua New Guinea was
asked by the people of Yout village, in a neighboring language area, to conduct a
two-week teacher training course. It took some months to organize, but he was
able to go. During breaks and after class, Wionare visited and prayed for sick
people in the village. On three such visits, the origin of the sickness was sorcery,
and the victims immediately recovered when Wionare prayed for them. They
were all victims of the same sorcerer, who, while his victims were being prayed
for, arrived on the scene to laugh at the expected failure of prayer to heal his
victims. At each house, the patient recovered, and the sorcerer witnessed the
power of God.

After the third occasion, the sorcerer was convinced and gave his life to Christ.
This was no simple confession. He led Wionare and other church leaders to his
secret hideaway in the bush, where he revealed his sorcerer’s tools and destroyed
them publicly. For ten years, this man had been a feared killer. His face was
visibly changed as soon as the items were destroyed. This man is no longer a
feared sorcerer, but an enthusiastic and helpful member of the community,
participating in worship and other church activities.

“I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you
ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you.”
Matthew 18:19

We are asking for your help. We believe that there are some things that just can’t
be accomplished without the effectual fervent prayers of righteous men and
women of God. So we are asking you to join us in a spiritual fast for our ministry
with Wycliffe. Would you consider fasting a meal a week, your favorite beverage
or dessert, or even TV for the month of June? During your fast, please pray daily
for the requests that we have included on the calendar included in this letter.

The dealership where Marty has been working this spring has undergone a
number of business changes in the last several weeks. As a result, Marty’s last
day of employment will be June third. We look to the Lord for His provision for
our ability to keep moving towards the work in Papua New Guinea. We are
currently at 26% of our ministry budget and give all glory to God! We believe in
