Wrenly’s Place by Valori Wells

Finished quilt size 80” x 80”

Before cutting and sewing, please read all instructions to familiarize yourself with them.
A 1/4” seam allowance is used throughout.

Materials Needed and Cutting Instructions


(all measurements based on accurate cutting, 1/4” seam allowance, and 42” wide strips)

2/3 yard VW31 WREN - cobalt A - cut 2 - 10 1/2” x 42” strips. Then cut into 6 - 10 1/2” x 10 1/2” squares.

1/2 yard VW31 WREN - mandarin Cut 1 - 12 1/2” x 42” strip. Then cut into 1 - 12 1/2” x 12 1/2” square for
B and 2 - 12 1/2” x 12 1/2” squares for C.

1/2 yard VW31 WREN - gypsy Cut 1 - 12 1/2” x 42” strip. Then cut into 1 - 12 1/2” x 12 1/2” square for
B and 2 - 12 1/2” x 12 1/2” squares for C.

1/2 yard VW32 INGRID - gypsy Cut 2 - 6 1/2” x 42” strips. Then cut into 6 - 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares for
D and 2 - 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares for E.

1/4 yard VW32 INGRID - mandarin Cut 1 - 6 1/2” x 42” strip. Then cut into 4 - 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares for
D and 1 - 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” square for E.

1/4 yard VW32 INGRID - cobalt Cut 1 - 6 1/2” x 42” strip. Then cut into 3 - 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares for
D and 1 - 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” square for E.

1/2 yard VW33 BLOOM - cobalt Cut 11 - 1 1/4” x 42” strips.


From these strips cut 12 - 1 1/4” x 10 1/2” rectangles and 12 - 1 1/4” x 12”
rectangles for the six A block borders.
Also cut 8 - 1 1/4” x 6 1/2” rectangles and 8 - 1 1/4” x 8” rectangles
for three D block borders and one E block inside border.

1/3 yard VW33 BLOOM - mandarin Cut 8 - 1 1/4” x 42” strips.


From these strips cut 6 - 1 1/4” x 10 1/2” rectangles and 6 - 1 1/4” x 12”
rectangles for one B block border and two C block inside borders.
Also cut 10 - 1 1/4” x 6 1/2” rectangles and 10 - 1 1/4” x 8” rectangles
for four D block borders and one E block inside border.

1/3 yard VW34 WILDFIELD - gypsy Cut 8 - 1 1/4” x 42” strips.


From these strips cut 4 - 1 1/4” x 14” rectangles and 4 - 1 1/4” x 15 1/2”
rectangles for two C block outside borders.
Also cut 6 - 1 1/4” x 8” rectangles and 6 - 1 1/4” x 9 1/2” rectangles
for three E block outside borders.

1/2 yard VW33 BLOOM - citrus Cut 10 - 1 1/4” x 42” strips.


From these strips cut 6 - 1 1/4” x 10 1/2” rectangles and 6 - 1 1/4” x 12”
rectangles for one B block border and two C block inside borders.
Also cut 16 - 1 1/4” x 6 1/2” rectangles and 16 - 1 1/4” x 8” rectangles
for six D block borders and two E block inside borders.

1/4 yard VW34 WILDFIELD - cherry Cut 4 - 1 1/4” x 42” strips.


From these strips cut 4 - 1 1/4” x 14” rectangles and 4 - 1 1/4” x 15 1/2”
rectangles for two C block outside borders.
Also cut 2 - 1 1/4” x 8” rectangles and 2 - 1 1/4” x 9 1/2” rectangles for
one E block outside border.

3 7/8 yards for background pieces Cut 8 - 3 1/2” x 42” strips. Sew these together lengthwise into one long
and borders strip. From this long strip cut 2 - 3 1/2” x 74 1/2” strips for the side borders
and cut 2 - 3 1/2” x 80 1/2” for the top and bottom borders.

Note: refer to the background pieces by number for cutting directions and placement in the quilt top.
Background cutting suggestion:
Use lengthwise strips to cut the individual pieces from.
Cut 1 - 12” x 42” strip -- cut all the 12” length pieces from this strip.
Cut 2 - 11 1/2” x 42” strips -- cut all the 11 1/2” length pieces from these strips.
Cut 2 - 8” x 42” strips -- cut all the 8” length pieces from these strips.
Cut 1 - 15 1/2” x 42” strip -- cut all the 15 1/2” length and the 14” length pieces from this strip.
Cut 1 - 17 1/2” x 42” strip -- cut all the 17 1/2” length pieces from this strip.

Background cutting, continued... Background pieces 1, 11, 68, and 75 - cut a total of 4 - 6” x 12” rectangles
Background pieces 2, 10, and 74 - cut a total of 3 - 3” x 17 1/2” rectangles
Background pieces 3, 37, and 72 - cut a total of 3 - 4 1/2” x 8 ”rectangles
Background pieces 4 and 73 - cut a total of 2 - 6” x 8” rectangles
Background pieces 5, 8, and 69 - cut a total of 3 - 5 1/2” x 17 1/2” rectangles
Background pieces 6 and 65 - cut a total of 2 - 2 1/2” x 14” rectangles
Background pieces 7 and 66 - cut a total of 2 - 2” x 14” rectangles
Background pieces 9, 43, and 70 - cut a total of 3 - 2 1/2” x 15 1/2” rectangles
Background pieces 12, 14, 22, 28, 46, 48, 54, 56, and 62 -
cut a total of 9 - 2 1/2” x 11 1/2” rectangles
Background pieces 13, 21, 55, and 63 - cut a total of 4 - 2 1/2” x 9 1/2” rectangles
Background pieces 15, 24, 27, 49, and 60 - cut a total of 5 - 1 1/2” x 8” rectangles
Background pieces 16, 23, 26, 50, and 61 - cut a total of 5 - 3” x 8” rectangles
Background piece 17 - cut 1 - 4” x 11 1/2” rectangle
Background pieces 18, 52, and 57 - cut a total of 3 - 2 1/2” x 8” rectangles
Background pieces 19, 53, and 58 - cut a total of 3 - 2” x 8” rectangles
Background piece 20 and 51 - cut 2 - 3” x 11 1/2” rectangles
Background piece 25 - cut 1 - 2” x 11 1/2” rectangle
Background pieces 29 and 47 - cut a total of 2 - 4” x 8” rectangles
Background pieces 30, 59, and 64 - cut a total of 3 - 3 1/2” x 11 1/2” rectangles
Background pieces 31, 36, and 45 - cut a total of 3 - 2 1/2” x 18 1/2” rectangles
Background piece 32 - cut 1 - 3 1/2” x 15 1/2” rectangle
Background pieces 33, 39, and 42 - cut a total of 3 - 3” x 18 1/2” rectangles
Background piece 34 - cut 1 - 3 1/2” x 12” rectangle
Background piece 35 - cut 1 - 4” x 12” rectangle
Background piece 38 - cut 1 - 7” x 8” rectangle
Background piece 40 - cut 1 - 5” x 12” rectangle

Sewing Instructions
1. Starting with the A squares, sew an 1 1/4” x 10 1/2” A side border rectangle to each side of A.

Sew the 1 1/4” x 12” A top and bottom border rectangles to A. +

*Sewing Suggestion: Work on one color block at a time +

(for example, do all “blue” blocks first).

Continue sewing the border strips on to each of the blocks, +

sewing single borders to all of the A, B and D blocks.

Sew double borders to the C and E blocks,

sewing the 1st border pieces, then adding the 2nd border pieces.

2. Referring to the quilt diagram and starting with the first row,
lay out the background pieces in numerical order and the blocks.

Row 1 -- Sew #1 background piece to the bottom of the A block. Press.


Sew #2 background to the right-hand side of the A#1 piece. Press.
Sew #3 background to the top of a D block and sew #4 background to the bottom of the block. Press.
Sew this unit to the right-hand side of #2 background piece. Press.

Continue working across the first section, sewing background pieces to the blocks,
while adding the long background between the blocks in numerical order.

3. Continue sewing the rows together.


When all the rows are complete, sew the rows together,
starting with sewing row 1 to row 2, and so on. Press.

4. Layer, quilt, and finish. Wrenly’s place was quilted with straight lines and a few star shapes,
to make sure that the quilting was an accent to the quilt, not a distraction.
