The project -Operación Moringa- from
the Star of David Church consist of:
A. To make two events per month, to divulge the uses of moringa as food, to
distribute recipes, to teach the cultivation procedures of the tree, directed to
leaders from Catholic and Protestant Churches, School Teachers and others
community leaders from the entire country.
B. To make twelve programs for Tv stations 29 and cable 98, about the plant, uses
and to invite the Tv audience to attend the events
C. In each event to give to each leader 200 seeds of moringa, and they will give in
their community 20 seeds to 10 family heads, for planting it in pots or the yard.
Each leader will receive 1 pound of moringa powder for his personal use.
D. All this lessons, books and seeds are for free for each leader attending the
events.
E. Up to date there are 5,000 seeds distributed. With the project in 5 years in can
be more than 5,000,000 new trees planted in the country enough to feed
2,000,000 people per year.
F. The Start of David Church is looking for a sponsor for a 10 years program with a
cost of $ 70k per year, this include de TV programs, the events with 14,400
leaders trained per year and more than 50,000 seeds per year purchased and
distributed. Each tree planted will give a minimum of 50 seeds per year.

Effect of feeding different levels of foliage of Moringa oleifera
to creole dairy cows on intake, digestibility,
milk production and composition

• An experiment was conducted in Nicaragua to determine the effect of feeding

different levels of foliage from Moringa oleifera Lam to dairy cows on intake,
digestibility, milk production and milk composition.
• The treatments were: Brachiaria brizantha hay ad libitum, either unsupplemented or
supplemented with 2 kg or 3 kg of Moringa on a dry matter (DM) basis.
• Six Bos indicus cows of the Creole Reyna breed, with a mean body weight of 394F24
kg were used in a replicated 33 Latin square design.
• Supplementation with Moringa increased ( P b0.05) DM intake from 8.5 to 10.2 and
11.0 kg DM day1 and milk production from 3.1 to 4.9 and 5.1 kg day1 for B. brizantha
hay only and supplementation with 2 kg and 3 kg DM of Moringa, respectively.
• Milk fat, total solids and crude protein and organoleptic characteristics, smell, taste
and colour, were not significantly different between the diets.
• Apparent digestibility coefficients of DM, OM, CP, NDF and ADF increased ( P b0.05)
in the diets supplemented with Moringa compared with B. brizantha hay alone.
• The results showed that the inclusion of Moringa as a protein
supplement to low quality diets improved DM intake and digestibility
of the diet and increased milk production but did not affect milk
composition.
Experimental design and statistical
analysis
• The treatments
were:
– 1. B. brizantha
hay+sugar cane
molasses,
– 2. B. brizantha
hay+2 kg
DMMoringa+sugar
cane molasses and
– 3. B. brizantha
hay+3 kg DM
Moringa+sugar
cane molasses.
Milk production and composition
• Mean daily milk production was significantly (P
b0.05) higher for cows offered Moringa
supplement than for those offered B. brizantha
hay only (Table 3).
• Increasing the amount of Moringa offered from 2
to 3 kg DM did not increase daily milk production
but supplemented cows produced significantly
more milk (1.80 and 1.97 kg, respectively) than
cows offered B. brizantha hay alone.
Milk Production and Composition
Other Results
• The results obtained with Moringa supplementation are
in agreement with Rocha and Mendieta (1998) and Foild
et al. (1999), who reported that cows supplemented with
Moringa had 13% and 30%, respectively, higher milk
production than cows fed a basal diet of Hyparrenia ruffa
grass or Sorghum vulgare straw.
• The findings in the Cratylia supplementation study are in
accordance with a number of earlier studies where cows
supplemented with Cratylia forage (0.5% of BW or 1.5 kg
DM/100 kg LW0.75) had between 14% and 25% higher
milk production than cows fed only sugar cane forage or
grass, respectively (Lascano, 1996; Avila and Lascano,
1997)
