1. (a) What are passive and active elements? Explain the volt-current relationship
of passive elements with examples.
(b) For the interconnected resistors as shown in figure 1, find the net resistance
between the terminals 1 and 3.

(c) Draw the volt-current characteristic of practical voltage source? [8+8+4]


2. (a) Define the following:
i. RMS value
ii. Average Value and
iii. Form factor of an alternating quantity.
(b) A series circuit consisting of a 10 ohm resistor, a 100 µF capacitance and a
10mH inductance is driven by a 50Hz a.c. voltage source of max. value 100
volts. Calculate the equivalent impedance, current in the circuit, the power
factor and power dissipated in the circuit. Also, draw the vector diagram.

3. (a) Define the following and explain by taking an example.

(b) Find the fundamental tie-set and cut-set matrix for the graph and for the tree
shown in the figure 2. [11+9]

4. (a) State and Explain Norton’s theorem.


(b) Find the current through load resistance RL and also find the voltage drop
across load using Millman’s theorem. as shown in figure 3 [8+12]

5. (a) obtain the Laplace transform of a unit impulse function.


(b) Explain briefly the use of Laplace transforms in the analysis of RLC circuit
subject to impulse voltage inputs.
(c) Find the response current for an RC series circuit with R = 5Ω and capacitance
of 5F when an impulse voltage of δ (t-2) is applied. Shown in figure 4 [2+8+10]

6. (a) The Voltages at the two ports of a two-port network are represented as V1 =5I1 +5I2 ,
V2 =I1 +2I2 . If a load impedance of 36 0o ohm is connected at the output port,
determine the input impedance.
(b) Determine Y-parameters for the bridge- T network shown in figure 5.[10+10]

7. (a) Define the reflection coefficient and derive the expression for the i/p impedance
in terms of reflection coefficient. [10]
(b) Explain how the i/p impedance varies with the frequency with sketches. [10]

8. (a) Give a neat sketch for a smith chart and explain clearly, step by step how
would you use this chart to: [10]
i. Calculate the complex reflection coefficient.
ii. Transfer impedance from one point to other along the line.
iii. Determine the length and location of a short circuited stub line for im-
pedance matching purpose.
(b) Discuss the merits and demerits of stub matching techniques. [10]
