Art II: Ceramics Black Book

Instructor: M.Ross
- How To: Set Up -
Your Black Book will be a working journal of your life as an artist for as long as you stay in
Art. It will be become very important to you. I would suggest using it as much as possible.
If you do some sort of art everyday you will see dramatic improvement.

Step 1: Write your and my contact information on the back of the front cover.
Example
If found, please return to either:

Student Name Westwood High School

Student Phone Number Attn: Ms. Ross, Art Dept.
Student Email 12400 Mellow Meadow Dr.
Austin, Texas 78750
512-428-3925

Step 2: Decorate the outside of the book. Make sure the book doesn’t look like
other students.

Step 3: Tape your class color tag to the binding

Step 4: Open your book.

Step 5: Turn the page.

That is you first “double spread”. Title both pages
“Table of Contents” or something similar.

Step 6: Turn the page.

That is your second “double spread”. Title both pages
“Table of Contents” or something similar

Step 7: Turn the page.

On your third double spread start numbering your
pages. Number the rest of the book in the same
spot on the front and back of the page. I would
recommend the bottom outside corner. The
numbers may be as fancy or as plain as you
would like.

- How To: 6wks Assignments -
Every 6wks you will have a series of Black Book Assignments. I believe that the
assignments train you to think more like a professional artist.

The 5 Steps

Every major project will require you to do The 5 Step Documentation in your Black Book.
This is the backbone of your Black Book.

Step 1. Inspiration – This section is where you write about the inspiration and background
ideas for your current project.

Step 2. Scheme – This is where you plan out your project.

Step 3. Create – This section is where you document how you made your project.

Step 4. Reflection – This is a section where you reflect and write about your finished
project.

Step 5. Prospect – This section is where you create an area that includes ideas for future
projects

Each Step has a proper layout that I would like you to follow. Each page should be about
50% visual and 50% written. Write in dark ink.
