Buying Tips
This plant usually grows slowly inside a house–purchase a large, more mature plant if possible. If a
young plant is your only option, you can still use it for first aid treatments but know it will take a few
years to get large.
Young aloe plants are potent enough to use for first aid treatments, but the more mature plant
offers a stronger potency, strength does increase with age.
Growing Tips
Aloe Vera can be planted indoors or outdoors, but will turn brown in harsh sunlight so plant in
indirect light.
Will freeze, make sure to protect it during frost dangers. Not suitable for wintering over in cold
weather zones.
Will grow faster outside than inside, but definitely makes a good indoor plant.
Use well-drained sandy potting soil, a good quality commercial potting mix with extra perlite, granite
grit, or coarse sand are added is recommended. Cacti and succulent mixes may also be used.

Watering
Aloe Vera is a succulent, don’t overwater.
Allow the soil to become fairly dry before watering. Lightly water during winter months since the
drying out will be slower.
If planting in a pot, make sure there is a drainage hole so the water can drain easily.
Repotting
When the plant is rootbound it will be top heavy and will send out more new shoots or pups, repot.
Remove new shoots when they are 3 to 4 inches high and replant in their own pots. If you don’t,
they will suck life from the mother plant. Signs of this happening: The mother plant will get bright green
and spread its leaves horizontally rather than vertically.
Water the pups well when repotting then don’t water again for about 3 weeks, forcing the new roots
to get strong and seek water. They may turn grey or brown initially, this is normal. These make great
gifts so give freely!
Leaves are thin and curled: plant is not being watered enough, it’s using up its own liquid.
Very slow growth: High alkaline soil or water; too damp for too long; not enough light; too much
fertilizer.
Removing Leaves
Harvest leaves as you need, the plant wound is quickly sealed and healed. The leaf will not grow
back, choose those closest to the ground as they are the most mature and most potent.
Using Aloe Vera For First Aid Treatments
For benefits and home remedies using Aloe Vera in first aid, see How To
Heal With Aloe Vera Plants: Tips Guide.
How To Cut A Leaf
Remove the leaf from the plant with a sharp knife.
Trim the thorny edges from the severed leaf, then slice the leaf across its width. The inner
transparent, gooey gel is ready to be applied directly to the afflicted area. Use generously, it will be
absorbed by the skin within several minutes.
After the gel from the first layer of ruptured cells has run dry, scratch the surface with a clean knife
to rupture more cells, releasing more juice. This can be continued until there is nothing but green skin
left.

I found that if you put potatoes into the soil with the plants they grow much stronger,(note: the potatoes will sprout and grow, so
just nip the sprouts off at ground level or you can even use the water from boiling potatoes, but do not use salted water and cool
the water to room temperature.

Our Aloe plant tipped over and one side of the mother plan broke off. There are about 4 shoots connected to a white woody
stem. Is there any way to make this sprout roots and grow?
Thanks!

Ed, Just stick that sprout in a pot and it’ll grow. In fact, if you just stick a cut-off stem in dirt, it’ll grow. This plant is amazing!

Thanks so much for this article. I just received an Aloe plant as a gift and did everything I shouldn’t have (overwatering, direct
sunlight, cold). I feel much better about letting it be since it’s winter here in Ohio.

Can someone tell me what do you do if you have an enormous number of large “pups” (approx. 10-12) that are continuously
growing horizontally? I bought the aloe vera 3 yrs. ago. I have replanted 1x)this plant & a few of it’s “pups” to a much larger pot,
however they are now growing at a rapid speed & are about to burst out this large pot. I really don’t want to re-pot 10-12 new
plants.

I am not sure why you don’t want to repot a fair number of pups from your mother plant, but if you do it will be normally easy to
find homes for the young sprouts. Have you tried advertising on a “Free-cycle” group in your town or city? I get “free” stuff and
give away stuff through our “Free-cycle” group all the time. Just tell the folks to bring their own pot with cactus type soil for as
many pups as they want. You may meet a lot of folks with your same interestes.

I stumbled on this article looking for the botanical differences between soap aloe (saponaria) and aloe vera. Since I have a dozen
aloes of one kind or another in my landscape, I would like to suggest some of this advice is not quite accurate. Aloe vera grows
outside in the landscape in Tucson AZ. It does not need indirect light. It does great in blistering full day sun. We have 180+ days
of 100 F or greater and 10-12″ of rain. While it does better with supplemental watering, it will sustain itself without it. Too much
water is its nemesis. It will take a frost and even a hard freeze down to 20-22. Not sustained, but we will get several consecutive
nights below 32 and it does fine. It may brown and curl at the tip, but that is about all. If And given lots of sun and regular
watering, it grows like a weed.

My aloe vera was growing beautifully, and a few weeks ago it started looking wilted and turning slightly brown. The last couple of
times I’ve watered it, I’ve seen some baby frogs run out of the plant. Are the frogs damaging my aloe vera by living in the pot?

my aloe plant was doing average inside then i had this brillant idea to put it outside for a while and it rained a few days too… now
my plant has really dark purple leaves that are no longer plump and about four or five green leaves and only like two of the green
leaves are healthy b/c they’re new. i dont know wat to do should i take the purple leaves off or will they still live or is my plant in
general basically dead? help…!
please and thank you!

that happend to my plants, they all turned brown and purplish after a few days of rain during their “drying period” after
transplanting, i put them in a shelter so they got sunlight but were kept out of the weather. it took a few weeks but they are now
green and healthy and sprouting pups!

I have harvested the juice from several leaves since they froze outside and thawed. Can it be kept unrefrigerated in a plastic
container? Or must it be refrigerated? An how long will it last if either are done? I make my own lotion – can it be added to that?

Our aloe plants were left out during a recent freeze and all the plants wilted terribly. Are they done for or can they be revived?

I want to plant some more alo plants out of the one in the yard. Do I first put it in water or does it go in cactis soil, the leaf that is.

o TipNut says:
Barbie the little “pups” should have roots on them already so you just plant those directly in the soil (water well once you plant
them).

A friend just thinned her aloe vera. She kept the young pups and was getting rid of the big plants. These plants are old and
probably should have been repotted because between the root and the plush leaves was a very long stem looking section. I was
wondering how to replant the mother plant. Should just the root be planted? Or should the plant clear up to the bottom of the
leaves be put into the soil. I’ve only seen websites which talk about transplanting pups but not the mother plant. The mother
plants are not growing vertical but laying flat. I’ve replanted some of the mother plants with just the root underground and others I
planted with the root and the stemmy section up to the bottom of the plush leaves into the ground. I’ve not noticed any difference
in it not growing. Any suggestions for transplanting mother plants.

hi i have a really confusing problem(i hope your still answering questions) my aloe plant has many pups, which i am now
removing but my plant has horizontal leaves(which means insufficient light) but some of the bottom leaves are starting to
brown(which means too much light) i just don’t get it! Also i planted a baby aloe plant and it just is dieing and drying up right now!
PLEASE HELP
The wound should quickly heal with little or no scarring, bandages will remove easily. There is also a much
reduced risk of infection when using Aloe.
For minor scar removal, keep applying Aloe Vera juice morning and night (daily). This may take several
months to see great results (six months or so).
For painful scrapes and abrasions, gently slide a split leaf over the area and reapply several times during the
next 24 hours.
Burns & Sunburns
Good for soothing and healing burns and sunburns, simply apply juice from an aloe leaf directly to
burned area. See also Sunburn Relief Home Remedies. Especially handy in the home for kitchen
burns!
Take a few sips once or twice a week to help regulate your bowels. Top up the jar with fresh aloe
leaves as needed.
Arthritis Treatments
Dice up Aloe Vera leaves and place pieces in a jar of water, refrigerate. Drink 4 Tablespoons per
day and top up water in the jar as consumed. The drink can be bitter but it does go away over time.
Some may find relief right away, many don’t find relief until a couple months later. Make a fresh jar of
leaves as needed.
For aching joints and muscles, rub Aloe Vera on the skin, relief should be felt within a few minutes
and can be repeated as necessary.
Acne Treatments
Give your skin a good cleansing morning and night. Apply juice directly from the leaf. Can also
apply to pimples and other sores.
For removing old acne scars, apply a little Aloe Vera juice morning and night until the scars are
gone. This can take several months. If skin is dry, apply with a moisturizing cream.
Asthma
Boil Aloe Vera leaves in a pan of water and breathe in the vapor.
Aloe Vera is an astringent and may cause skin to dry. You can apply baby oil or other lubricant
along with the aloe to help prevent dryness.
What leaf is best to use in first aid treatments? The lowest leaves (closest to the ground) should be
used first. These leaves are older and larger so they have more juice and greater potency.
STEP 2
Come back to your kitchen table. Cut off the cut end once
more where you see the yellow or amber colour bleed from
it. That is a very healing ingredient, but it has a bitter taste. Personally I avoid
that, but if I were sick enough, I'd take that too!
Now I fetch a long oval plate out of the cupboard and lay
down the aloe leaf on it's side. With the knift still in hand, I
slice up the side for the full length of the leaf, but I try to
leave the other side in-tact at the skin. Now I can lay the
leaf open with the bottom and the top halves both facing up. They are hinged
together by the skin I did not cut through.
STEP 3
Next I put down the knife and pick up a teaspoon. With
the spoon, I scrape gently but firmly down the full length
of the leaf from the pointed end to the cut end. Try to
avoid catching the green gel of the skin, as it will taste
bitter too. We just want the clear aloe gel as it is tasteless.
(Well, on a hot day I prefer it cool so it is easier to
swallow, but in our sunroom, it was chilly most of the
year).
STEP 4
With the knife and spoon I cut up the long slippery
pieces of aloe gel so they are like small bit-sizes. (Some
of us have vivid imaginations and can get crazy ideas if a
long slippery thing goes down our throats). Since they
are hard to get ahold of, I scrap the gel pieces into a
small medicine cup.
LAST STEP
Lift up the cup and throw it back into your mouth and down
the throat. If your imagination is doing a number on you, drink
some water or juice right after it. For the squimish ones, I
would toss it into a juicer with some other juice. One short
buzz and you have no idea that you're eating your aloe vera,
for it has no real taste but what other foods contribute when
combined.
Did you know that aloe vera supplements are great for reducing
your choloesterol? Discover how it helps both cholesterol and
arthritis.
If you do an internet search you are likely to find more and more stories of people who eat
their aloe vera plants.
If you do eat them on a daily basis, you are going to need lots of aloe vera plants. They
seem to thrive on this and will keep putting out more leaves and popping up new shoots, or
what I call "babies." See how topropagate or multiply your aloe vera plants.
On the other hand, I've found a great supplier for aloe vera and other healthy supplements
in Puritans Pride. Just now they have a series of specials on in December.
Some people are allergic to aloe vera - though that's hard to understand - when
it is so good for us. I suspect such people are so full of toxins that when aloe
vera starts to deal with them, the stirring up of the toxins in preparation to
dispel them, makes these people feel worse at first. I would think they should
persist for a while, and once the toxins are all out of their body they can revel in
excellent health.
Almost every source points out that side effects from using aloe vera for
therapeutic purposes are very rare. As stated above, I would suggest trying a
while longer, but if you cannot handle whatever your side effect might be, just
stop using it. Simple as that. The side effects will stop.
If you should take too much aloe vera, or if it really is wrong for you, you
might notice your urine turns pink or red. You could have stomach cramps or
spasms in your intestines. Remember to use common sense, and not to over do
things right away. If really serious, you might have severe diarrhea, or even
kidney problems.
If your skin is allergic to aloe vera, you might have a stinging, burning
sensation on your skin, a dermatitis.
I'm afraid I forgot to take photos of the very full and crowded little pots that I transplanted
the other Saturday, but perhaps you can use your imagination as you see those little pots in
the photos below, and you see how they multiplied into many larger pots from the
originating ones. (For more thoughts on the process see the page on propagation).

being in dry, compacted soil as they will draw moisture out of the air when needed, but I
think they thrive better if the soil has some room to breath).
Okay, I've scooped this 8-litre ice cream pail full of my soil mix, and now, after watering the
soil, I use my little spade to wedge a hole big enough to plant the root of one of the aloe
vera plants.
Placing the aloe vera plant into the hole, and then I always pat the soil in tight and close
around the bottom of the plant. It does not like to have the leaves rest on the damp soil, so
if I can get it to stand up by tamping the soil around the root, I try to do that.
I'm not sure this weaker plant looks good enough to get a pot of its own, so I plant it on the
side in this pot. If it takes root and perks up, I can always pull it up and move it to a bigger
pot by itself.
that works out. If that
experiment goes well, I
may be offering to sell
some, and ship them out.
Many people
know that aloe
vera is great for
healing burns,
but often they
stumble upon
its other healing
properties by
accident. "My
aloe vera plant
healed a finger
cut ," reported
Cheryl, a visitor
to this site. Her
account is a
good example
of such discoveries.
"Just to share... I had a cut on my finger that would not heal with medicine for about 7
weeks. It itched and kept breaking open, bleeding. It irritated me daily.
As I was putzing in my small therapy garden area, I had a couple aloe plants that were
doing wonderful and I think I over-watered them or something because they started peeling
apart dying from the middle out. I finally thought to use it on the cut. After years of having
it and never tried it. I always thought if you get burned. . . . Then that day I thought, "Try
it."
I cut the leaf and applied the gel.. within 3 DAYS that area on my finger healed and there
was NO itching, nothing. It has not split open since I got it to heal. I felt really dumb to call
a Dr. for a one inch split that wouldn't heal. I was so-o-o glad I tried it!
Since, I've been investigating the uses of aloe. Your website is informative, and thank you.
I live in west coast of Florida and this week it has been lots of free offerings for the plants. I
responded and will get more. I am now using it on trial for my feet, which lots of expensive
meds and prescription creams are not healing.
I rub it on my face and all over. I think I'm on a long term aloe kick now. It is amazing.
Perhaps you have used aloe vera for finger cuts, but have stumbled upon something else
that aloe vera heals. Others may never have thought of trying it for that, so we need your
story. Would you be willing to tell us about it?
Natural Ingredients
in Aloe Vera!
You may be wondering what exactly are the natural
ingredients in the aloe vera plant that is so healing and
healthful to us.
Vitamins
The aloe plants have lots of vitamins, all except vitamin D, (sorry, I do not
know why!) It does have the important antioxidant vitamins A, C and F.
Vitamins B (thiamine), niacin, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), choline and folic acid
are all in there too. Some researchers think there may also be a trace of vitamin
B12 in the natural ingredients.
Enzymes
Enzymes are catalysts. The ones said to be
present in aloe vera, such as amylase and
lipase, can aid digestion by breaking down
fats and sugars. One important enzyme, a
carboxy-peptidase, inactivates bradykinins
and produces an anti-inflammatory effect.
Minerals
Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium,
manganese, copper, zinc, chromium and iron
are all ingredients found in the aloe plant. Magnesium lactate inhibits histidine
decarboxylase and prevents the formation of histamine from the amino acid,
histadine. Histamine is released in many allergic reactions and causes intense
itching and pain. The prevention of its formation may explain the antipuritic
effect of aloe vera. - in other words, it eases itching. Hallelujah!
Sugars
Sugars are found in the mucilage layer of the plant under the rind, surrounding
the inner parenchyma or gel. They make up 25 per cent of the solid gel matter
and comprise both mono- and polysaccharides. The most important chemicals
are the long chain polysaccharides, made of glucose and mannose, known as
the gluco-mannans. When taken orally, some of these bind to receptor sites that
line the gut and form a barrier, possibly helping to prevent a€leaky gut
syndrome. Others are ingested whole by cellular absorption known as
pinocytosis. Unlike other sugars which are broken down prior to absorption, the
polysaccharides are absorbed complete and appear in the blood stream
unchanged. Here, they act as immuno-modulators capable of enhancing and/or
holding back the immune response.
Anthraquinones
I confess, I don't know what exactly these are, but there are people who have
dug into this, and they sound believable. They say there are phenolic
compounds found in the sap. The bitter aloes consist of free anthraquinones and
their derivatives: with names like this; Barbaloin-lO- (1151 - anhydroglucosyl)
aloe-emodin-9-anthrone, lsobarbaloin, Anthrone-C-glycosides and chromones.
(Hmm... can those be natural ingredients?)
In plain English, when you have lots of these compounds they will purge your
gut. In smaller amounts they will help your digestive system to absorb your
food better. They also have power to fight microbes, and can ease pain. Applied
on the surface they help you absorb ultra violet light, and hold back tyronase
activity, and reduce the formation of spots on your skin.br>
This webpage includes examples of my personal uses with aloe vera on my own
animals...cows, calves, dogs and cats.
At first sign of injury or illness aloe vera is used either internally or topically or both
together.
It is important to always consult your health professional in the case of animal health
care issues.
When your pet, or any animal, has been attended by a veterinarian or animal health
professional aloe vera can have a role to play in speeding up the healing process. It
is quite safe to use aloe vera along with the treatment prescribed.
Further down this page I relate two dog health problems where I used aloe vera -
one included veterinarian treatment.
• gum ulceration
• pulled muscles
• arthritic joints due to navel
infection at birth
• sore teats
• abscesses
• ringworm
• skin problems
• wounds
I've even read where diseased meat unknowingly has been included in pet food. The
poor old pet has to make do with what we humans give him even if he doesn't like it
much or he has the same thing served up daily.
This is a free flow frozen product consisting of small pieces of different meats along
with eggs, sesame seeds, mussels and other nutrients. (It is available only in New
Zealand. If you live in Auckland or Northland email me for more information) I also
give my dogs meaty bones to chew. Great for jaw, teeth and gum health.
Within 2 months Jess was a changed dog. Her coat was shiny, she had put on weight
and athough she was still very active it wasn't uncontrollably so.
Years back my top Huntaway dog, Toss, died at age 10 riddled with cancer and
although we don't know for certain I suspect he would have lived a healthy, longer
life had I known more about healthy dog food.
Case 1
Because my 4 farm dogs are very healthy I only use aloe vera internally on them
should they experience injuries or have operations.
Mac recently was attacked by another dog resulting in a leg swelling, lameness and
minor skin punctures. Aloe vera was given daily in his food as well as being applied
to his wounds and rubbed onto his leg swelling.
Within 4 days all swelling and lameness had disappeared and the puncture wounds
had healed well.
Case 2
Mac again...had an operation to remove what appeared to be a tumour in his neck.
Some months before he had run into a rusty, jagged metal pipe and spiked himself
in the neck. It appeared to heal but then a lump developed.
The operation resulted in a 10 cm incision which Mac re-opened the night after
having the stitches removed! I immediately began internal use of aloe vera and
several times daily sprayed the site with aloe to hasten healing. His healing was fast
and he soon returned to farm duties with no sign of another lump developing.

If you are ingesting it for better health and digestion, there is a good way to do it.
1. Take 2-3 large aloe leaves and cut them into @1x1 in chunks.
2. Put the chunks in a large pot of water and put on stove to boil.
3. Let boil for several minutes. Lower heat in needed so water does not boil over.
4. Take pot off flame and let steep and cool for @ an hour.
5. Take the plant pieces out and throw away. The liquid is what you will drink.
For best use and effects drink about a cup of the aloe "juice" 3 times a day for 5 days in a row. Don't take again for about
2 weeks, then you can repeat.
This is a recipe many women in my family use and swear by. It is good to avoid or shorten colds and flu, and helps
digestion. It smells and tastes nasty, but goes down easier if you hold your nose!
loe Vera, fresh and raw, has played a large role in my life for a very long time. Since I live in a
tropical climate, I am fortunate because Aloe Vera grows like a weed and is commercially grown
here in Florida. It is quite easy to grow just about anywhere as long as it has sufficient sunlight,
healthy grainy soil and is protected from extreme weather. As a matter of fact, Aloe thrives on
neglect, just not temps below 45º. It grows suckers which can be repotted and they will grow into
large plants. Aloes breed like rabbits if allowed to do so.
I've used Aloe Vera externally as well as internally with terrific results. Externally it's one of the
most powerful wound healers I've ever seen and used, especially for burns. But it's also fabulous
for skin problems such as eczema, psorisis, roseaca, etc.The skin drinks the aloe as though it's
parched. Improvements are immediate in texture and smoothness and rapid in healing. When
ingested, Aloe tastes bitter, and one needs to play around to improve its palatiblity. It mixes well
with fruit juices such as tart Granny Smith apples, pineapple and so on.
It's well worth your while to explore and experience the inner and outer effects of Aloe Vera.
When your inner health is at its optimum, your outer appearance will glow and be radiant.

It was about three years ago, whilst I was a full time General Practitioner, a job
that I had been doing both at home and abroad for twenty eight years, that I
came across Aloe Vera.
Should anyone have told me that within three years of my meeting with a mother,
whose son's eczema had totally cleared with an Aloe Vera and Bee Propolis
cream, that I would be researching its medicinal uses full time, I would have
laughed. But it happened. That meeting was to totally change my medical
perspective and in fact to change my life.
At first I couldn't accept that Aloe Vera combined with Bee Propolis (the sticky
resinous substance collected from various tree barks and buds by bees with
which they line their hives creating a sterile environment) could suppress this
atopic or juvenile eczema, where all my moisturisers and steroid creams had not.
It was even more upsetting because my special interest in Medicine was
dermatology and I thought I knew a bit about it. What was in this stuff? Why did it
work? I was already sure it wasn't a placebo effect so my search for a scientific
explanation began.
I began this search by reading everything I could about the plant's history, for by
now I at least realised that it was a succulent (Liliaciae Sub species aloinae), a
member of the lily and onion family, also related to garlic and asparagus, of
which there are more than three hundred varieties but of which only a few had
medicinal properties. It is generally accepted that the most potent was Aloe Vera
Barbadensis Miller.
The name Aloe Vera or True Aloe probably stems from the Arabic word Alloeh
meaning "Shining bitter substance". We still refer to "bitter aloes" describing the
laxative drug still listed in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia today. This drug was made
from the sap of the plant found under the hard green rind. It contains mainly
aloin, chemically an anthraquinone, which has been known since ancient times to
possess very powerful purgative action if used neat. Bearing in mind that severe
constipation was a very serious problem in those days, it is not surprising that
this extract of Aloe Vera was highly prized just for this action.
I discovered that Aloe Vera has been used by mankind for several thousand
years and over the centuries there have been many references to Aloe Vera in
many cultures: from the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, as well as in
the literature of the Indian and Chinese peoples. Several famous physicians such
as Pliny the Elder, Dioscorides and Galen, the father of modern medicine, who
first described how the circulation worked, all used Aloe Vera as part of their
therapeutic armoury.
There are also many romantic tales about it, suggesting that the Egyptian queens
Nerfertiti and Cleopatra used it as part of their regular beauty regimes.
Supposedly Alexander the Great in 333 B.C. was persuaded by his mentor
Aristotle to capture the Island of Socotra in the Indian Ocean for its famed Aloe
supplies, needed to treat his wounded soldiers. Aloe is also mentioned in the
Bible several times, for example, in St. John's Gospel, but this was in fact, Lignin
Aloe, not Aloe Vera. Lignin Aloe is a tree whose scented bark was used for
incense as well as an ingredient used in embalming the dead.
The true Aloe has been endowed with such marvellous properties that over the
years around the world it has been given many wonderful names such as Burn
Plant, Medicine Plant, Wand of Heaven and Plant of Life.
The first reference to Aloe Vera in English was a translation by John Goodyew in
A.D. 1655 of Dioscorides' Medical treatise De materia Medica which he wrote in
AD 70-90.
Traders first brought Aloe Vera to London in 1693 and by 1843 considerable
amounts were being imported to be made up into medicines. Throughout the
18th and 19th centuries it remained one of the main popular prescribed and over-
the-counter medicines.
Whilst discovering the fascinating history of Aloe Vera I was also experimenting
with some Aloe products on myself and my family, and getting some remarkable
results. Aloe Vera can be drunk as a nutritional health drink or tonic or it can be
applied topically to the skin and scalp as creams and lotions. Like most natural
remedies, Aloe works best when used fresh from the plant but it oxidises rapidly
when cut and exposed to the air. Unfortunately, it will only grow in warm, fertile
areas and its main enemy is frost, so here it must be grown indoors. If one has
access to a mature plant then the best way is to cut a leaf off it, fillet out the inner
leaf gel and use it directly, but for most of us it is necessary to buy a preserved
product. I think the product should remain as near to the natural plant as possible
to achieve the correct balance of ingredients and be interfered with as little as
possible, so I do not favour products that have either been heat treated, filtered,
concentrated or powdered.
When using it at home I saw the phenomenal effect it had as a first aid burn
treatment – my wife often burns her hands on the Aga oven because the glove is
never where it should be. She was very skeptical at first, but was truly amazed by
the rapid pain relief, the speed of healing and the healing without a scar. She
never even attempts to find the glove now!! No wonder it is called the burn plant!
I had also discovered that the first really scientific research into Aloe Vera was
carried out in the 1930s and 1940s into its effect on X-Ray burns.(1-9)
I started drinking the gel daily and after about ten days noticed that chronic
catarrh, a legacy of smoking for 20 years, had cleared up and more importantly I
just generally felt much better.
In the U.S., Carrington Laboratories have isolated one of the sugars from Aloe
Vera, a long chain polysaccharide which is being trialed with AIDS patients. It
has been shown in laboratory testing to be an immunomodulator, i.e. it can both
enhance the immune response – very beneficial to AIDS sufferers whose
response is very poor; but it would also seem to be able to slow down or retard
the response where it is too much. A common example of such a response would
be in hayfever, where there is an over-reaction to grass pollens. Carrington
Laboratories' product "Carrisyn" is already licensed for the treatment of a viral
illness in cats, a form of feline leukaemia. The continuing development of this
drug for human use is very exciting.
In order to understand the various ways in which Aloe Vera may work it is
necessary to look at the constituents of the plant. There are over 75 known
ingredients and they are all contained in about 1% of the plant, the rest being
water, so they are obviously present only in small amounts. Their
disproportionate action is thought to arise from the synergistic effect of these
substances, i.e. they can be likened to working together as a team so that the
total effect is greater than would be expected from the combined individual effect
of each substance.
When deciding which patients to select for a small pilot study of Aloe Vera in my
own practice, my criteria were that a) they either had a disorder of an epithelial
tissue, such as a skin problem, or b) an immune problem such as rheumatoid
arthritis. I chose patients with chronic conditions that had not responded well to
conventional therapy. At my suggestion most were keen to try it, and overall I
was immensely impressed to find that I achieved roughly a 70% success rate
across the board. Given that I was dealing with some of my most difficult cases I
was tremendously encouraged. With the skin conditions I got my best results on
atopic or juvenile eczema and confirmed what I had been told by the mother who
first introduced me to it. The Aloe Propolis cream produced both a moisturising,
anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial response. This resulted in softer, less itchy
skin and reduced infection. It is infection that usually causes these children's
eczema to flare up so I think the addition of bee propolis, a sort of natural
antibiotic, is most useful.
Two patients with chronically itchy skin (urticaria) settled down and several adult
patients with acne rosacea where the facial skin is constantly red with pustule
formation, also noticed a marked improvement with a reduction in their high
colour by applying an Aloe Vera gel preparation twice a day. One particular
elderly lady in her eighties who developed a traumatic ulcer on her skin was
delighted to see it healing virtually on a daily basis over a few weeks, and once
healed it was impossible to see where it had been as there was no scarring, a
regular feature of Aloe Vera treatment.
Many patients, after treatment with aloe for various skin problems, commented
that their skin quality had improved and felt softer and smoother This is not
surprising as Aloe Vera has been added to many cosmetic products for many
years because of its known rejuvenating action.
The IBS is complex in its make up, and it is acknowledged that there is usually
both a physical and a psychological component, resulting from stress. It is called
a functional bowel disorder because if the bowel is examined it appears to be
perfectly normal in every respect. There is no known cause and no uniformly
effective conventional medical treatment. However, it can be extremely
debilitating to the sufferers who complain of abdominal pain and bloating or
intermittent diarrhoea, sometimes alternating with constipation. Occasionally
there is passage of mucous.
Unfortunately, in all cases where Aloe Vera suppresses symptoms they return
after a few days if the drink is stopped, so taking Aloe Vera in no way results in a
permanent cure.
When looking at disorders of the immune system I selected some patients with
arthritis, some with asthma and some with M.E. (Post Viral Syndrome). Only
about 40-50% of the M.E. patients benefited from drinking the Aloe Vera, but I
got a much better response from the arthritis and asthma sufferers.
People with Arthritis, under the influence of Aloe Vera, were able to reduce the
number of anti-inflammatory and pain killing tablets to a level where they ceased
to get the usual side effects of abdominal pain and indigestion, whereas the
asthmatics were able to cut down on their usage of inhalers, including the steroid
inhalers. These effects were probably due to Aloe Vera's innate anti-inflammatory
effect as well as its effect on the immune system.

Aloe Vera Side Effects - I have written quite a lot on
this site about all the good uses to which aloe vera can
be put, however, as with most things in life, it's side effects, I feel, need to be recorded in order to ensure
that both care and balance are preserved.
Many times throughout this site I have stated that I use a specially prepared aloe vera concentrate which
I mix in cold water and drink as and when I choose.
However, I took great care in choosing this preparation and I follow the directions for use of the product
to the letter, as I have always been aware that the side effects can be quite unpleasant and overdosing on
it, potentially very unpleasant as it can cause loose bowels and painful stomach cramps.
I have included below a list of some of the side effects that have been documented for the purposes of
ensuring that care is taken in selecting and using aloe vera products.
Dehydration can result from overdosing on aloe vera, so follow the dosage indicated on any product you
may purchase for use.
Intestinal spasms or stomach cramps - again these can result from overdosing on the product, so
ensure you use products according to the manufacturers instruction.
If you are taking steroids or diuretics you should not take aloe vera internally.
If you are taking prescribed medication, you should check with your doctor before using aloe vera or
anyother herbs for that matter. Mixing prescribed drugs with herbal remedies is unwise as the
combination may result in worsening whatever condition or ailment you may be trying to cure.
Further aloe vera side effects can include muscle weakness and irregular heart beats due to a lowering
of potassium in the blood. Anyone suffering from heart or kidney problems should not use aloe vera
internally.
If you are pregnant or nursing your baby, aloe vera should definitely not be taken orally. Aloe vera may
cause spontaneous abortion in pregnant women.
Finally, if you are allergic to aloe or other plants from the same family like tuplips, garlic or onions, you
should stay away from using aloe vera on your skin or hair.
This list of aloe vera side effects is not exhaustive, however, remember that aloe vera products can
be used and are used daily by thousands of people who benefit healthwise from its use. Just be sure that
you use a good quality product and follow the directions for use as laid down by the manufacturer or if
using straight from the plant ensure you do not use too much of the juice at any one time.
