Technical Working Group on Sanitation:

In the 15th WASH Cluster meeting the WASH cluster coordinator suggested TWG sanitation
for identifying uniform latrine designs. The partners were nominated and UNICEF was
requested to chair the TWG sanitation meeting. The participants included UNICEF, WHO,
UN-HABITAT, Save the children, ACTED, LPP, BLCC and People In Need. In this regard
two meetings were held at WHO on 20th October, 2010 Multan office where the final designs
of latrines were finalised especially for areas where water table is high.

The methodology adapted by TWG on sanitation was presentations on various latrines design
and discussions according to the criteria set by WASH cluster coordinator in the agenda to
select unified design and inputs for inter cluster (especially shelter cluster).

Proceedings of TWG Sanitation to WASH cluster coordinator for recommending

future sanitation projects or programmes for prevailing improved sanitation in the
flood affected areas of Punjab. Projects can have modalities of improved sanitation by
making sanitation models for upcoming programmes. The overall efforts through
these projects or programmes will aim at improved health of target beneficiaries' and
elimination of open defecation.
1. Such sanitation projects should be started to make the villages or communities
sanitation as a model of improved sanitation. The sanitation facilities under
these projects should be provided in such a manner that involves the
communities by participating in the learning and implementation activities.
2. These projects will provide a base line data for the acquired improved
sanitation programmes in the flood affected areas, which can be run through
supporting the line departments and organizations.
Local ways of poor sanitation can be modified through these modified designs of
latrines (Low cost improved sanitation), presented in the TWG Sanitation by
participants from number of local, international NGO’s and UN-HABITAT.
On the second day and final day TWG sanitation meeting UN-HABITAT, LPP and
save the children presented the different types of latrine designs along with BOQs and
details. The three final types of latrines (household and communal level) were
selected.

The three different types of latrines finalised by TWG are as follow
