“TRASHY SLASHES” Shirt
Materials
V-neck T-shirt (American Apparel). Sewing
thread. Scissors, straight pins. Drafting triangle
and pencil to mark slash lines.
Instructions:
Lay the T-shirt flat on the table, also laying the
sleeves flat. Use the drafting triangle and
­pencil to mark the slash lines.
On each sleeve, measure 2" (5 cm) down
from the shoulder edge, lay the drafting tri-
angle on the sleeve, at a right angle to the
sleeve fold, and mark a slash line, 4" (10 cm)
long. Mark a 2nd slash line on each sleeve, 2"
(5 cm) below the 1st slash line. On the shirt,
mark the 1st slashes 11/2" (4 cm) above the
hem edge. Mark these slashes each 51/2" (14 cm)
long, beginning at each side seam. Then mark
3 more slashes on each side, each 4" (10 cm)
above the preceding slash.
Slash the shirt (beginning at the side seams)
and sleeves (beginning at the fold edge) as
marked - making sure that there are no folds
in the shirt/sleeves when cutting.
At each side seam and at each sleeve fold, fold
the slash edges to the outside, each 3/8" (1 cm)
wide, and pin. At each side seam and at each
sleeve fold, machine stitch across folded-under
slash edges or sew them in place by hand.
Shirt “CASSETTE NECKLACE”
Pattern on page 2.
Materials
V-neck T-shirt (Amercan Apparel). Sewing
thread. Textile marker (Javanna). Chain, 28"
(70 cm) long and key ring (DIY center). Nail
polish remover with acetone. Cotton pads.
Instructions:
Copy the pattern with a photocopier. We
­recommend that you copy the pattern twice
and use one copy to practice “printing” on a
scrap of fabric. Please note: Do not use a
­color photocopier!
Lay the T-shirt flat on the table. Slide a piece
of paper between the shirt front and shirt
back. Lay the photocopy of the pattern on the
shirt front, printed side facing down. Soak
­cotton pads with nail polish remover and rub
them over the back of the copy (practice this
first on a scrap of fabric). If the lines of the
­pattern do not transfer evenly, trace over the
lines with a textile marker. Sew the key ring to
the shirt, at the upper corner of the cassette,
by hand. Run the chain through the key ring
and sew the chain ends to the shoulder
­seams.

“BOOMBOX” Shirt
Pattern on page 3.
Materials
V-neck T-shirt (American Apparel). Black
­sewing thread. A piece of sequin fabric, ­approx.
8" x 4" (20 x 10 cm). Tissue paper. ­ Textile
­marker (Javanna).
Instructions:
Trace the pattern onto tissue paper. Lay the
paper with the traced pattern on the shirt
and pin in place. Stitch along all lines with black
sewing thread. Carefully tear away the tissue
paper. Use the textile marker to draw the
smaller pattern elements (buttons and switches)
and also the shadow on the handle. Cut the
sequin fabric into 2 pieces, each 4" x 4" (10 x
10 cm. Pin the pieces of sequin fabric to the
inside of the shirt, over the marked circles
(speakers), with the sequin side facing the
shirt. Working from the outer side of the shirt,
stitch along the circles again. Trim away the T-
shirt 3/16" (5 mm) inside the stitched circles so
that the sequin fabric is visible within the circles.
“SNAPPY” Shirt
Materials
V-neck T-shirt (American Apparel). Sewing
thread. Small sew-on snap fasteners (Prym).
Instructions:
Carefully open the attachment seam of the right
front neck band at the center of the shirt front.
For the ­“placket fastening“, lay the right end of
the neck band on the left end, approx. 11/4"
(3 cm) long. ­ Stitch lower band end in place.
Stitch the front edge of the right band to the
attachment seam of the left band, approx. 11/4"
(3 cm) long, then sew the right band to the left
band, in a shallow curve. Sew 2 lower snap
halves to the left band as shown in the photo.
Sew one upper snap half to the center of
each sleeve, 11/4" (3 cm) from the lower edge.
Sew a lower snap half to each sleeve, spaced
31/2" (9 cm) from the upper snap half.
Sew 2 upper snap halves to each side seam,
3/ " (2 cm) and 6" (15 cm) from the hem edge.

Sew 2 lower snap halves to each side seam,
41/2" (11 cm) and 91/2" (24 cm) from the hem
edge. Close all snap pairs.
“(RE)MOVED SLEEVES” Shirt
Materials
V-neck T-shirt (American Apparel). Sewing
thread.
Instructions:
Trim the sleeves off the shirt, close to the
sleeve attachment seam. Carefully open the
seam of one sleeve. Cut the shirt front along
centre front, from the lower edge to close to
the neck band. Pin the opened sleeve to the
cut edges. If the edges of front and sleeve
don’t match, simply lay tucks in the longer
edge. Stitch the sleeve edges to the shirt edges.
“ZIPPERED” Shirt
Materials
V-neck T-shirt (American Apparel). A metal
zipper, 20" (50 cm) long. Sewing thread.
Instructions:
Hand-sew thread bars around the zipper
teeth, 43/4" (12 cm) and 4" (10 cm) from the
lower end of the zipper. Cut the zipper
between the thread bars. Save the shorter
zipper piece.
Cut the left side seam of the shirt open, 15"
(38 cm) long, beginning at the lower edge.
Turn the cut edges under, 3/16" (5 mm) wide,
tapering to the end of the cut. Pin the cut
edges to the zipper tapes, close to the zipper
teeth, so that the zipper opens from the lower
edge, up. Stitch the cut edges to the zipper tapes.
Make a cut in the shirt, 31/2" (9 cm) long, 2" (5 cm)
from the right shoulder seam. Turn the cut
edges under, 3/16" (5 mm) wide. Pin the cut
edges to the tapes of the shorter zipper piece
and stitch in place.
Cut the shirt along the centre front. Turn the
right front edge under, 3/8" (1 cm) wide. Pin
the right front edge to the left front edge,
overlapping the edges approx. 4" (10 cm) wide
on the lower edge and approx. 2" (5 cm) wide
on the upper edge. Topstitch 3/16" (5 mm)
from the right front edge to close the center
front again.
Roll the sleeves up and tack in place with a
few stitches.
