1. Goals & Traits. (3 points)

a. List 5 goals that you would like to achieve before you retire. It may be
helpful to think of where you would like to be at that time, how you might
wish to be remembered, what obsesses you, what you find most
absorbing or enthralling, or what will happen if you remain absorbed and
enthralled. Please consider this request in both material and near-material
terms.
b. Next, list 3 personal traits that should be helpful in reaching your goals
along with 3 personal traits that may tend to hinder you in reaching those
goals.

2. Norms & Beliefs. (3 points)

a. List 3 actions that you believe always to be “right.” Think about actions
that you would ALWAYS approve if others did them, under any
circumstances, and that certainly you would be willing to do yourself.
(Yes, this element of the assignment is a difficult one; but, the effort is
towards finding those particular things that you would always judge as
acceptable.)
b. List 3 actions that you believe to be “wrong.” Here, think about actions
that you would ALWAYS condemn in others, under any circumstances, and
that you would never be willing to do yourself. (Yes, this consideration is
difficult, as well.)
c. After you have completed your lists, explain why the actions listed are
“right” or “wrong,” in your opinion; what is the basis for your conclusion
that it is right or wrong?

3. Personal Values. (3 points)
a. Review the Personal Values List on pgs. 4-6.
b. Circle the ten values that are most important to you.
c. Cross out the ten values that are least important to you.
d. Next to your circled values, please rank order those top ten values from (1) (greatest
importance) to (10) (least importance).
4. Write your Credo (4 points)
Imagine that you are a CEO of an organization, which has offered you the chance to take a six-month
sabbatical, all expenses paid. You will not be able to communicate with anyone at your workplace
while you are away - not by letter, phone, fax, email nor other means. However, before you depart,
you need to ensure that those with whom you work are intimately familiar with the principles that you
believe should guide their decisions and actions in your absence. They need to know the values and
beliefs that you think should steer the organization while you are away. After all, you will want to be
able to fit back in on your return and begin to lead once again from where you left off. This memo
should be no longer than 1 page (double spaced).

5. Connect and Reflect (4 points)

Review your personal audit. How does it demonstrate that you spent your time, focus and energy?
Are you currently spending your time in ways that reflect your values, that evidence the priority
structure that you wish to maintain? Did you follow your own Credo statement? Why or why not?
What is one thing that you could have done on that day to more closely live according to your values?
This part of the assignment should be no longer than 1 page (double spaced).

6. Tell a Story (3 points )

Write a story of a time in which you demonstrated one of your top ten values or lived according to
your credo. Make sure that your story is memorable and described vividly. Think of a clever title for
the story that will capture your reader’s attention and help your reader to remember it. One bonus
point for the most creative title in class, one that links and integrates the most effectively, and also
demonstrates wisdom . . . This story should be no longer than 1 page (double spaced).

OBJECTIVE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to be intentional about your decisions and to become
aware of the foundations of that intent and those decisions. To become a credible leader you have to
comprehend fully the deeply held beliefs – values, principles, standards, ethics, and ideals – that drive
you. You have to freely and honestly choose the principles that you will use to guide your decisions and
actions. Then, you have to act in alignment with those values and express them clearly to others.
