SECTION 5 - HEALTH HAZARDS

Carcinogenicity: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified
crystalline silica (quartz) as a probable carcinogen (2A). Since this material
may be contaminated with small amounts of quartz above the 0.1% limit, it
must be treated as a potential carcinogen. Use appropriate respiratory
protection.
Medical Conditions which may be None known. Persons with a history of chronic lung disease may be at
Aggravated: increased risk from exposure to excess quantities of any material in dust
form.
Target Organs: Skin, eyes, lungs

Acute Health Effects

Skin Contact:
May cause itching and temporary irritation
Eye Contact:
Dust may cause irritation
Inhalation:
Dust may cause irritation of the upper respiratory tract
Chronic Health Effects:
Silicosis, a chronic lung disease characterized by fibrosis and scarring of the
lung tissue, may be the result of prolonged exposure to crystalline silica. Safe
hygiene practices should be observed to minimize exposure.
Primary Entry Routes: Inhalation, eye and skin contact
Signs and Symptoms of Exposure: Can cause drying of skin
Emergency and First Aid Procedures: For dust in eyes, flush with water until clear.

CONSULT A PHYSICIAN IF ANY SYMPTOMS PERSIST

SECTION 6 - REACTIVITY DATA

Chemical Incompatibilities: Alkalinity of wet calcium silicate corrodes aluminum
Conditions to Avoid: None in designed use
Hazardous Decomposition Products: None
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur

SECTION 7 - SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES
Procedures for Spill/Leak: Clean up. Wet down to avoid dust. Use proper dust respirator whenever
dust is generated (see Section 2 above).
Waste Management: Not regulated under RCRA Hazardous Waste Regulations. Dispose to a
dry dump area in accordance with local and federal regulations.
Dust Monitoring: Worker exposure should be monitored to determine the need for respiratory
protection. If exposure levels are unknown or if exposure levels exceed the
OSHA-PEL or the ACGIH-TLV (see Section 2 above), use proper
respiratory protection. Depending upon exposure levels, a more protective
respirator may be necessary. Use respiratory protection as described under
OSHA regulations 29CFR 1910.134.
Storage and Handling Precautions: Store in a clean, dry place
Other Precautions: Organically-contaminated insulation should not be installed.

SECTION 8 - SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

HMIS rating: Health = 1 Flammability = 0 Reactivity = 0 Personal Protection = E
Eye Protection: Safety glasses for good industrial practice
Gloves: Use barrier gloves if handling produces skin irritation.
Respiration: Quartz-approved dust respirator such as 3M Model 8710 or 9900, or equivalent
Ventilation: Mechanical ventilation should be used as necessary to keep dust concentration below regulated
or acceptable values (see Section 2 above). If acceptable values cannot be maintained, proper
respirator protection must be worn.
Other: None
