The Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City was established through Presidential Decree No.

673 issued by then-president Ferdinand E. Marcos in 1975. Its original name was the Philippine
Heart Center for Asia and was changed to its current form in 1975. It was inaugurated on
Valentine's Day, February 14, 1975 and graced by renowned cardiovascular experts such as Dr.
Christiaan Barnard, Dr. Denton Cooley, Dr. Donald Effler, and Dr. Charles Bailey.

The first Director of the PHC was Dr. Avenilo P. Aventura (1974-1986), a cardiovascular
surgeon who performed many pioneering operations in the Philippines including the first
successful renal transplantation in 1970, the first CABG in 1972, and developed and implanted
the first ASEAN bioprosthesis, the PHCA porcine valve. The first patient to be admitted to the
PHC was Ms. Imelda Francisco on April 14, 1975.

Asia's Leading Kidney Transplant Center


The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) is one of the leading kidney transplant centers in Asia where patients have
been cared for, for nearly 30 years. Our hospital is the foremost kidney transplant center in the Philippines and likewise
acknowledged in the Asian-Pacific Region for our successes in renal organ transplantation.  For nearly three decades, NKTI saw
the rise of its services as the Institute realized projects such as the Electron Microscope, Laboratory Automation, a new Urology
Center and just recently, the Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS). 

Entering the new decade, NKTI now embarks on another trailblazing project is it readies the soft launching of the new Diagnostic
Center.  This 3-floor building will house the entire Radiology Dept., expansion of the Emergency Room and Pharmacy and the
expanded IANAHP Nursing school.

The Philippine Orthopedic Center is a government medical facility under the Department
of Health which is tasked to provide health care delivery to patients afflicted with
musculoskeletal disorder and related conditions.  It was designed to serve as the center
for trauma and orthopaedics in the country.  Being fully subsidized by the government
both its services and facilities are available for free to the indigent segment of our
community.  Of course, those who can afford are not prevented from paying for the
facilities availed of.  Similarly, those who seek pay services are also entertained. 
As a trauma center, its relevance to our mechanized and often turbulent times is without
question a necessity.  Its growth as a center for orthopaedics and rehabilitation
medicine attest to the continuing commitment of the institution towards attaining its
primary objective – to serve.

Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit and


non-government organization that aims to uplift the lives of the
Orthopedically handicapped persons. It was founded by Sr.
Valeriana Baerts, ICM. a Belgian nun who was assigned as a
volunteer nurse here in the Philippines. The center is located in
Cainta Rizal which is about 15 kms. East Manila. It has five
workshops, six Dormitories for trainees who came from far
provinces. It is a rehabilitation and skills training center with
sheltered workshops where the people with disabilities are trained
to be productive and self-reliant member of the society.
 
Sr. Ma. Paula Valeriana Baerts, ICM. A Belgian nun who belonged to the Missionary Sisters of the
Immaculate Heart of Mary. In 1965, she was sent in the Philippines and assigned in the Philippine
Orthopedic Center. During her service in the hospital, she saw the miserable plight of the disabled
that brought about her eagerness to improve their lives. Later did she realize that it was her real
mission in life.
