DEF STAN 02-40 Part 4 Issue 3
0 Introduction
0.1 NBCD Class Books for surface ships are to be in two separate series as follows:
0.2 A unique capital letter, allocated by the Sponsor, and placed after the series number is to be used to

DEF STAN 02-40 Part 4 Issue 3
1 Scope
1.1 Part 4 of this Def Stan specifies the requirements for the presentation, layout, content and amendment
of NBCD Class Books for HM Surface Ships and Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels, and Stability and Survivability
Books for HM Surface Ships.
1.2 This Part is for application with, and in the event of discrepancy takes precedence over, the JSP 180
Series.
1.3 Requirements
The specific use of NBCD Class Books and Ship Stability Books require specialized books to be produced.
The requirements for their production are set out in Clause 3 to Clause 8 of this Def Stan.
The provision of source material for NBCD Class Books and Stability and Survivability books is the
responsibility of the technical sponsor, normally the relevant Ship Section.
1.5 Publishing
a) In order to achieve a cost effective through life solution for updating and revision of the publications, the
preferred method of presentation of camera-ready copy for printing is that of electronic media.
b) The exact publishing software and drawing software used is not stipulated by this Def Stan. Production
methods, including the tools proposed for production, from contract initiation to completion are to be
agreed between the technical sponsor, book production sponsor and the relevant contractor.
2 Warning
The Ministry of Defence (MOD), like its contractors, is subject to both United Kingdom and European laws
regarding Health and Safety at Work. All Defence Standards either directly or indirectly invoke the use of
processes and procedures that could be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. Defence
Standards or their use in no way absolves users from complying with statutory and legal requirements
relating to Health and Safety at Work.
3 Physical Standards
a) The requirements for physical standards are generally set out in JSP 181, which is to be qualified by the
specific requirements of this Clause of the Def Stan.
b) NBCD Class Books are to be loose-leaf books normally of A4 size, with throw-clear colour plates that
can vary between 1189 mm and 1370 mm in length.
c) Stability and Survivability publications are to be loose-leaf books of A4 size, with pull out colour sections,
between 480 mm and 570 mm in length.
1
DEF STAN 02-40 Part 4 Issue 3
d) Binders for NBCD Class Books are to be of robust construction suitable for a minimum life of 20 years.
One set of binders is therefore to be suitable for the lifetime of the ship. The contents of the book may
be updated many times in that period.
e) The construction of this binder is to be hard-back generally to contain A4 pages. The need for larger
size books has been identified from time to time, but any new requirement for other than A4 size must
be agreed with the book production Sponsor.
f) The thickness of these binders is to be determined for each new book and major revision as appropriate
to the necessary contents. Liaison is to be established with the Sponsor to ensure that binder
requirements are identified and agreed. Page and drawing plate containment within a binder is to be by
four hole, heavy duty expanding columns capable of locking.
g) Binders for stability and survivability books are to be of the four-ring type. Binder size will usually be
suitable for A4 size material, but it may be necessary to increase the size for a particular requirement. In
the event of such a requirement arising, then the Book Production Sponsor is to be consulted.
h) The Book Production Sponsor is responsible for all matters concerning the production of camera-ready
copy, printing the required number of copies and the provision of binders.
4.1 Requirement
a) The requirements for presentation and layout of NBCD Class Books and Stability and Survivability
Books are to be in accordance with JSP 182 unless otherwise specified by this Clause.
b) Application information which is used in the page examples (see Figure 1 to Figure 13) is shown in the
following list with amplifying remarks:
a) The level of information in NBCD Class Books is to be that which will assist the NBCD Officer in forming
an estimate of the effects of NBC attack, fire or damage, and give guidance on countermeasures and
the maintenance of power and services.
b) The level of information in Stability and Survivability Books is to be that which will advise the command
of draughts, angles of heel and stability associated with a particular ship which will arise from various
damaged incidents including the addition of firefighting water.
