Importance of giving a Career Guidance Test

A Career Guidance Test is a six hour paper and pencil test spread out over two mornings
that gives a good indication of one’s aptitude, interest & personality which are necessary
in making career choices.

Aptitude:

The key objective of a career aptitude test is to help an individual understand his own
natural or acquired abilities and identify the career choices that best match his aptitudes.
An aptitude test will give us the student’s level of potential in the areas tested.

The areas tested are as follows: Verbal Tests -the verbal abilities of an Individual,
Numerical Test – tests the numerical or maths ability of an individual, Abstract
Reasoning Test-tests the logical reasoning of an individual, Space Relations- tests the
visual imagination of an individual, Mechanical Reasoning – tests the mechanical ability
of an individual and Clerical Speed Test- tests an individual’s ability for clerical work
e.g.: bookkeeping etc.

A Career aptitude test can give a blueprint for success based on natural talents or
aptitudes.

Career aptitude tests also play a crucial role while making a transition from one line of
work to another. Tests are being increasingly used to make a better match of candidate’s
abilities to job requirements.

In today’s Corporate world aptitude tests play an important role in the selection of a
candidate as these tests help in the right selection of a candidate required for the post.

Interest

An interest test will tell us about the individual’s likes and dislikes. It will tell us the
individual’s preference for a particular vocation. It is important to know your likes and
dislikes while making a career choice.

Personality

A personality test will tell you “how you are as a person”, your traits and characteristics. It
is essential that your personality traits fit the vocation that you choose to pursue.

The Personality Test checks the fourteen factors of an individual’s personality, some of
the factors that can be shown from this test is the emotional trait, submissive trait,
aggressive trait, confidence level, dependence level etc…

It is important to get a match between the aptitude (what you can do), interest (what you
like to do) and personality (your personality traits) while making a career decision. And
the report given by the counselor includes the interpretation of this match.
It is important to note that once the tests are taken they cannot be administered for
the next 1 year due to practice effect.

Thus it is important that the students do the test seriously so that the test results
reflect your true potential, preferences and personality.

With the number of choices available today these tests assume even a greater
importance and significance because a skewed result would mean a wrong choice and
an opportunity lost that will never written.

This is a self awareness programme which will give you information about yourself
and also will guide you in making your career choice.
