Use the following steps to create a Ghost boot disk. (Enter comment here) 5

Step 1 - Create a bootable system disk 6

Creating a bootable system disk requires formatting a floppy disk and copying the DOS system files to it. For detailed

instructions, see the document How to create a DOS system disk for Ghost.

2. Save Ghost files to the boot disk:
Create a directory called Ghost on the boot disk, such as A:\Ghost.
Copy the following files from the hard drive to the A:\Ghost directory:
l Ghost.exe
l Ghost.env
l Wattcp.cfg

Step 3 - Edit the files Autoexec.bat and Config.sys

To have the computer load the files that you add to the bootable floppy disk, use any text editor, such as Notepad, to create the startup files
Config.sys and Autoexec.bat on the bootable floppy disk. Edit Config.sys or Autoexec.bat to add an appropriate line for each file that you want
loaded from the bootable floppy disk.

To load the Ghost files

If you want Ghost to start automatically when starting from the bootable floppy disk, add the following line to the end of the Autoexec.bat file that
is on the bootable floppy disk:

ghostpe.exe

If you are using Symantec Ghost 6.x or later, rather than Norton Ghost 2001 or later, use the line G h o s t . e x e rather than Ghostpe.exe.

Do not add a line for Ghost.env or Wattcp.cfg into the startup files.

Step 4 - For NDIS drivers only: Microsoft Client files

When using the NDIS drivers, the Ghost Network Boot Disk uses some of the Microsoft Client files but does not use
the (entire) Microsoft Client. This step obtains the necessary Microsoft Client files and saves them to the boot disk.

To obtain the files

1. Create a temporary directory on the hard drive, such as C:\TEMPDSK.
2. Download the file Dsk3-1.exe from Microsoft. Save the file in the directory you created, C:\TEMPDSK. To
automatically begin the download process, click here.
3. Double-click the file name, Dsk3-1.exe, in Windows Explorer. This will run the file, extracting the files contained
within it to the same directory. Some of the extracted files include:
l Netbind.com
l Protman.do_
l Protman.ex_
4. Copy the Netbind.com file from the C:\TEMPDSK folder to the boot disk in drive A.
5. Expand and copy Protman.do_ and Protman.ex_
These files are in a compressed format. Use the following steps to expand these files and copy them to the
boot disk (For more information, see the section "Compression formats" in the document How to expand files
from floppy disk or CD.)
6. Click Start > Run.
7. Type cmd in the box, and then click OK. This opens a DOS window.
8. Type

CD\
CD TEMPDSK
EXPAND.EXE PROTMAN.DO_ A:\PROTMAN.DOS
EXPAND.EXE PROTMAN.EX_ A:\PROTMAN.EXE
EXIT

After saving the files to the bootable floppy disk, edit the startup files, Config.sys and Autoexec.bat, to load the files
Netbind.com, Protman.dos, and Protman.exe. For further instructions, see the file Readme.txt that you extracted in
step 3.

Step 5 - Save NIC drivers to the boot disk

Obtain the packet drivers appropriate for your Network Interface Card and save them in the NET folder on the boot
disk. Symantec supplies some NIC drivers at its FTP site. Consult the table that is at the end of this document to
determine whether your NIC is listed.

To transfer the NIC files from Symantec's FTP site to the boot disk
1. Create a temporary folder on the hard drive, such as C:\TEMPNIC.
2. Download the *.zip file to the C:\TEMPNIC folder. For more information on *.zip files, see the section
"Compression formats" in the document How to expand files from floppy disk or CD.
3. To extract the NIC driver files from the *.zip file and copy them to the boot disk, type:

CD\
CD TEMPNIC
PKUNZIP.EXE *.zip
MD A:\NET
COPY *.* A:\NET\*.*
EXIT

Replace the file name *.zip with the actual name of the file you downloaded to the TEMPNIC folder.
After saving the files to the bootable floppy disk, edit the startup files, Config.sys and Autoexec.bat, to load the
appropriate packet drivers. See the instructions that are included with the packet drivers.

Step 6 - Configure the NIC drivers

The driver files on the boot disk might need to be configured specifically for the computer they will run on. Consult the
documentation for your NIC, such as a Readme.txt file that is included with some NIC drivers. Many NIC
manufacturers have Web sites that provide configuration information. For additional information see the document
Tips for configuring NDIS drivers.

If Ghost either cannot run or cannot make a connection with the Ghost Server after booting from the Ghost boot disk,
configuring the NIC drivers specifically for your computer is likely to resolve the problem. For troubleshooting
connection problems, see the document How to troubleshoot a Ghost Network Boot Disk.

Step 7 - Configure Ghost's Wattcp.cfg file

When the Wattcp.cfg file on the boot disk has not been configured, Ghost uses the default values. If the default values
are not appropriate, Ghost cannot make a connection across the network.

For instance, if the network is not using DHCP, you must add the Ghost Client computer's IP address to the Wattcp.cfg
file. The entry is in the form:

IP=<IP address>

A valid entry for a Class C address, for instance, might look like this:

IP=124.45.88.121

If you are running the Ghost Client on several computers, each computer will have its own IP address. An easy way to
handle this is to make copies of the Ghost boot disk, then edit the Wattcp.cfg file for the IP address of the computer it
will be used on.

Note: If these computers are using DHCP, do not enter a value for the IP address, since Ghost will obtain this value
from the network.

If Ghost cannot run or cannot make a connection over the network, adjusting the configuration of the Wattcp.cfg might
resolve the problem. For information on the Wattcp.cfg file see Appendix B in the Ghost User's Guide.

NIC drivers at Symantec's ftp site

Symantec supplies some NIC drivers at its FTP site. Many of the NICs listed in the chart below are out of date. If your
NIC drivers are out of date, do not appear to be functioning correctly, or are not listed in the chart below, contact the
NIC manufacturer to obtain the latest NIC drivers and the instructions for using them.
