Internship Programme Policy of UNDP – Pakistan

UNDP is the UN's global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to
knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. UNDP is on the ground in 166
countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges. As
they develop local capacity, they draw on the people of UNDP and wide range of partners. The United
Nation Development Programme provides grant funding for development, and is the main body for

Objectives
The Internship Programme is intended to provide “hands on” experience to post graduate/graduate
students (both local and expatriate) in the final year of their academic studies from a recognized
institution. It offers learning/training opportunities in various aspects of multilateral technical
cooperation. The Internship Programme intends to acquaint interested persons in the development sector
with UNDP.

Typical Tasks
The typical tasks performed by the interns include:

• Conducting research
• Writing documents
• Cataloguing information

• Assisting in organization of conferences, forums or other collaborative events


and
• Publishing knowledge stories/best practices.

Eligibility

Intern(s) would be selected on competitive basic according to the following criteria.

• Current enrollment in a post graduate/graduate level degree programme in development – related


field such as economics, international relations, anthropology, sociology, public or business
administration, accounting, IT or environmental studies.
• If pursuing their studies where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate
stages, have completed at least fourteen years of formal education towards the completion of a
degree.
• Demonstrated interest in the field of development.
• Written and spoken proficiency in English and/or Urdu.
• Willingness to work in multi- cultural environment.
• Respect for the principles of the United Nations chapter and the UNDP Statement of purpose.

Selection Process

• Internship assignments are available on a part-time and full- time basis throughout the year,
depending on the availability of meaningful assignments and the needs and capacity of the office
to receive and supervise interns.

• A Programme or Operations Unit requests Human Resources Unit (HRU) for


intern/s with Terms of Reference (TOR). HRU posts the TORs on the website for the interested
candidates to apply for.
• The interested Unit and HRU review the CVs collected online and through institutions. Short
listed candidates are called for interview and subsequent selection.

Terms and Conditions

The selected intern shall:

• Sign the attached Internship Agreement reflecting instructions and general code of practice
before start of the assignment.
• Submit documents relating to academic career to the Human Recourse Unit, which would be
kept on file for one year to substantiate possible reference in future.
• Work under the overall supervision of the Unit Chief, and may be assigned to a Programme
Officer as per the Terms of Reference agreed to by the respective DRRs.
• Not communicate to any person external to UNDP any confidential / unpublished information
made known to him/ her by reason of his / her association with UNDP except as required by the
assignment or upon written authorization by UNDP.
• Not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the
internship or for the six months immediately following the expiration date thereof.
• Submit a report to the Unit Chief on project assigned by UNDP or University/ Institution term
paper in accordance with UNDP requirements after completion of the assignment.
• Sign an agreement for a maximum period of 24 weeks and minimum of 8 weeks.
• Be available on the date specified for the Internship.

How to Apply

• Applicants must preferably apply through UNDP Jobs website (http://jobs.undp.org.pk/) by


submitting CVs online.
• A recommendation letter/request for Internship should preferably be received from the institution
where the applicant is enrolled at the time of application.

Contract Modality

UNDP does not remunerate interns. As an intern shall not be considered as staff member of the United
Nations and is therefore, not eligible to privileges and immunities of the UNDP Employees.

A certificate will be awarded to the end of the successful completion of the assignment.
