Fiji PM to lead AIR PACIFIC OFFERS
NCD meeting OPTIONS TO STAFF

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama will be invited to lead Fiji’s
Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)
team to the NCD High Level meeting in
New York in September.
He is also going to be approached to
become the NCD Champion for Fiji.
Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma
confirmed that the invitation for the high-
level New York meeting will come from
the United Nations and the World Health
Organisation.
The New York meeting is a follow-up to
the recent WHO NCD Summit in Russia,
which Dr Sharma attended.
The Russia summit agreed that political
leaders need to be involved in the fight
against NCDs, with the New York
meeting planned as the first ‘get together’
where leaders will be asked to lead the
fight against NCDs in their respective
countries.
“There needs to be a strong political and
social will regionally to continue the fight
against Non Communicable Diseases
(NCDs),” Dr Sharma said.
“We need to have leaders who can
become NCD champions. We are going
to approach the Prime Minister to be the
Fiji champion, similar to the role played
by the President for the HIV/AIDS
programme.”
Dr Sharma said there needed to be a
united campaign against NCDs. Figures
recorded by the Ministry showed the
battle cannot be won without a united
front.
Dr Sharma said in Fiji, just under 20 per
cent of the population were patients of
hypertension.

diabetic and do not care for themselves.
Only 50 per cent know of their conditions
and 10 per cent are in adequate control.
“Despite, the provision of medication,
advice on active lifestyles with diet,
exercise and advice on reduction of
alcohol, tobacco, and national statistics
show that we are not progressing.
Individuals continue to deny that they
are suffering from diabetes and resort to
all sorts of traditional measures without
results.
“Too many patients continue to fool
health care providers by turning up to
clinics and lying about their control of
sugar. Some alter their records,” he said.
“Point taken that the clinics are large and
busy. Patients want universal cover and
free medication.”
He said kidney end stage disease is only
cared for by dialysis and transplants.
Dialysis in Fiji has been provided by the
Kidney Foundation of Fiji (KFOF). The
Government grants to KFOF are intended
for use on the poor patients for a three-
month period with a view to progressing
them to renal transplant if they can afford
it overseas.
He said people should eat in moderation,
locally-grown food low in fats and oils.
“Exercise regularly, plant your own
vegetables, root crops and fruit in your
backyard gardens. Reduce your grog,
alcohol intake and stop smoking tobacco
products,” he said.
“As a nation we’re becoming obese,
physically unhealthy and developing
hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The
complications of these diseases lead us to
end up with kidney and heart diseases. We
are dying prematurely,” Dr Sharma said.
Air Pacific briefed its staff of generous
options available to them as it restructures
and downsizes work force numbers.
They include up to near half a year of
severance pay, and continuing travel
benefits on the national airline.
Reports indicate that managing director/
Chief Executive Officer Dave Pflieger
began advising all Fiji staff of the
extensive voluntary staff reduction
programme.
Staff were apparently briefed that
the loss-making national airline is
restructuring to ensure it can return to
sustainable profitability in the face of
growing pressure from increasing fuel
prices and competition from low-cost
carriers such as Virgin/Pacific Blue and
Jetstar.
Officials were not available for
comments.
But as reported earlier, Mr Pflieger
appears focused on rebuilding the
company to ensure lower costs, better
customer service and industry best
practices.
Air Pacific has apparently noted that
because of the critical nature of their
roles, pilots and engineers are not
eligible to apply for these voluntary
release programmes.
The company, which has already
eliminated 20 per cent of its senior
management positions in this restructure,
is believed to have offered three options
to its Fiji staff.
1: Early Retirement Programme for
employees 50 years and over, who have

in the case of redundancy set out in
their employment contract or collective

3. Redundancies. While the company
hopes to reduce the number of involuntary
job reductions, a number of additional
roles and positions are expected to be
permanently eliminated. The invitation
to apply for these voluntary separation
programmes is apparently open until
May 30. It is believed the company
hopes to finalise all applications and
advise each applicant on the status of
their application by June 13.

FICAC files
for removal
of judge
from case
The Fiji Independent Commission
Against Corruption (FICAC) has
filed an application for the removal
of Court of Appeal judge Justice
William Marshall in the appeal case of
Motibhai Group boss Mahendra Patel
and former Post Fiji General Manager
Tevita Peni Mau.
FICAC spokeswoman Erica Lee has
confirmed filing the application.
Lee said FICAC was seeking Justice
Marshall to abstain from participation
in the bail application pending appeal,
the Appeal hearing and any future
matters arising out of the trial of FICAC
vs Tevita Peni Mau and Mahendra
Motibhai Patel.
“FICAC is pursuing this application on
the basis that it had received credible
information to substantiate a reasonable
apprehension of bias.” Lee said.
FICAC has yet to receive any direction
from Justice Marshall on their
application.

Marketing controls of foods
for infants and young children
Manufacturers, distributors and retail
outlets of foods marketed for infants and
young children have until the end of May
to comply with the Marketing Controls
Regulations 2010.
The Marketing Controls (Foods for
Infants and Young Children) Regulations
2010 promote and protect breastfeeding
and adequate nutrition for children from
birth to five years.
The Marketing Controls is regulated
under the Food Safety Act 2003.
The regulations apply to products
imported into, packed in, or produced and
processed in Fiji for domestic distribution
and consumption or export/re-export.
Maximum penalty for an offence specified
in Section 66 (3) of the Food Safety Act

Government has identified a market
in the United States of America for
cassava export.
This is part of the Government’s
efforts to help farmers and boost the
agricultural sector. Government is also
shifting its focus to other agro-products,
not only dalo.
Fiji Agro Marketing Company Limited
chairman Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga
said they signed the deal with the US-
based company last week.
“We are awaiting our first consignment
and details will be released once we
send that consignment across,” he said.
Colonel Tikoitoga said they have been
concerned with the non-availability of
a dalo market.
Dalo is one of Fiji’s main agricultural
export products.
“We want to balance it and focus on
other agro-products,” Colonel Tikoitoga
said.
“Government is committed to securing
more markets for our farmers and we
are seeking all avenues to meet the local
demand.”
He said more dalo had been wasted
because of the unavailability of a
market.
Meanwhile, Fiji Agro Marketing has
now come under the Prime Minister’s
Office in their bid to revive the industry.

Mahendra Patel and former Post Fiji
Managing Director Tevita Peni Mau
have had their application for bail while
waiting for appeal to be heard, have been
refused by Court of Appeal judge Justice
William Marshall.
Justice Marshall ruled against Patel and
Mau’s application for bail while they
await the outcome of the appeal against
their prison sentences of 12 and 9 months
for charges of office abuse.
However, Justice Marshall did grant the
two men leave to appeal against their
conviction and sentences.
In his ruling, Justice Marshall said that
submissions made by Patel’s lawyer that
he needed bail for medical treatment
overseas did not affect his ruling in not
allowing bail for the 71 year-old.
In reference to Mau’s application for bail,
Justice Marshall also said this was a case
where bail pending appeal should not be
granted.
Mau and Patel’s appeal session will be
held between August 30 and September
30 this year.
Meanwhile, an application for the recusal
of Justice Marshall has been filed by the
prosecution in this matter.

The Duke of Edinburgh Awards national
executive committee led by the Ministry
of Youth and Sports director Ms
Makereta Sauturaga met for the first

together with the Consumer Council,
Dietetics and Nutrition Services and
Nursing Services support the Marketing
Control Regulations 2010 and its
monitoring and enforcement by the
Environmental Health Services.
“We are glad that we are able to convene
this first meeting for the committee,” he
said.
“It is an important committee that we
oversee the Duke of Edinburgh program.
In this first meeting is about information
sharing with members before we
progress in terms of the running of the
committee so that they are well versed
with the program.
“So the intention is for members to
know each other and to understand the
background of the Duke program.
“The program basically looks at young
people between 14 to 25 years-old” he
said.
There are three levels of awards:
• Bronze
• Silver
• Gold
“We’ve been encouraging young people
to start with the bronze program before
they move on to silver and gold awards,”
he said.
“Really it’s a voluntary program for
individuals to really develop their
potential as a young person.”
Last year the program in Fiji was

Fiji’s cabinet approves

capital gains tax decree
Fiji’s Cabinet has approved a Capital
Gains Tax (CGT) decree as announced in
its 2011 National Budget.
Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum
made submissions to cabinet highlighting
that CGT will apply to capital gains from
the disposal of capital assets on or after
May 1st 2011.
In a government statement, Sayed-
Khaiyum said this will ensure that all
gains from the disposal of the above
assets will be taxable at a rate of 10 per
cent.
“The capital assets that will be covered
under this new tax are: land, a structural
improvement to land, or an interest
in land, including a lease; a vessel of
over 100 tonnage, including yachts; a
share, security, equity, or other financial
asset; an intangible asset; an interest
in a partnership or trust; an airplane,
helicopter or other aircraft; or an option,

right, or other interest in an asset referred
to earlier.”
The following capital gains are exempt
from the new tax:
• A capital gain made by a resident
individual or a Fiji Citizen that does not
exceed F$20,000.
• A capital gain made by a resident
individual or a Fiji citizen on disposal
of the individual’s principal place of
residence, provided the residence has
been the individual’s principal place
of residence during the whole of the
period in which the individual owned the
residence.
• A capital gain made by a person on the
disposal of shares listed on the South
Pacific Stock Exchange
• And a capital gain made on disposal of an
asset that is used solely to derive income
exempt from tax under the Income Tax
Act.

National airline Air Pacific is reportedly
planning to announce extensive and
unprecedented voluntary reduction
programmes for employees later this
week.
This will be part of the company’s
continuing efforts to restructure and
revitalise an airline that is critical to
the nation’s economy and tourism
development.
Sources indicate that the voluntary
programmes will provide incentives for
employees to retire early or voluntarily
separate from the company in the next
few weeks.
This is apparently an effort to shrink the
size of Air Pacific’s workforce and reduce

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and
Spa has had a demanding and successful
month picking up on the tourist industry’s
start of the peak season.

(Amendment) Decree 2011.

New vaccines approved for Fiji
Cabinet has approved the introduction of
three new vaccines to the Fiji immunization
programme.
The new vaccines are the pneumococcal
vaccine, and rotavirus vaccine for children
under five years, and the HPV vaccine for
12-14-year-old girls.
Cabinet based its decision on a submission
by the Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma.
The Minister said that immunization is a
key public health intervention in protecting
humans against harmful infections or
diseases.
“It is considered one of the most important
cost effective public health interventions
for the protection of children and women’s

The increasing leptospirosis fatality count
in Fiji has alarmed health officials who are
calling on all to take proper precautions.
This after the Ministry of Health (MOH)
reported another three deaths last week.
The MOH has confirmed that altogether
seven people have died so far at Lautoka
Hospital due to the influx of the disease.
It states the total number of people affected
by leptospirosis now stands at 45 compared
to 42 last week.
Ministry spokesman, Peni Namotu
confirmed that all deaths have been at the
Lautoka Hospital.
He said currently 18 patients suffering from

disease are those constantly exposed to
animals like farmers, veterinary workers
and those who milk cows.
He also advised people to cover cuts with
water proof covering to wash their hands
after contact with any outdoor animal.

affected by Leptospirosis last year.

APPROVAL OF
WATER TAX
Amendments made to the 2008
Water Resource Promulgation have
been approved by the state following
submissions made by Minister for Trade
Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
According to a statement released by
government, Sayed-Khaiyum said the
amended promulgation with further
explanation provided through the
application of the tax rates.
The amended now reads; “For the
avoidance of doubt, where a person or
business extracts 3,500,000 litres of
water or above in a month, that person
or business shall pay water resource tax
at the rate of 15 cents for every litre of
water extracted in that month and not only
for every litre extracted over and above
3,500,000 litres.”
Sayed-Khaiyum said the Decree also
amends the Water Resource Promulgation
2008 by removing the 15% wastage tax
allowance which currently exists thereby
mandating that all water that is extracted
from the underground water table is
taxable.

cultivate
man made
fresh water
pearl farms
Fiji will soon have its own man made
fresh water pearl farms.
This has been confirmed by the Minister
for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty
Alleviation, Dr Jiko Luveni.
Dr Luveni said they are in talks with
Chinese investors in setting up fresh
water pearl farms in Fiji by the end of
this year.
She said the idea triggered during her
visit to China where they saw fresh water
pearls being cultured in man made ponds
beside individual houses.
Dr Luveni said the fresh water pearl
farming will target the women of the
country for self income generation.
“We are currently looking at women
landowners for fresh water farming and
once we get the issue of lands sorted out
than we can move ahead with the idea.”
she said.
Dr Luveni added that if we get ample
women landowners showing interest
than we will call the Chinese investors to
carry out feasibility study.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is
calling vehicle owners to register their
vehicles or lose their registrations.
LTA has issued the warning to a
large number of motorists whose
registration had expired.
Authority chief executive officer,
Naisa Tuinaceva said those wishing to
register their vehicles and cannot do
so due to arrears can go ahead with
it as the LTA has made provisions to
make partial payments.
Tuinaceva said they have given
motorists six months to clear these
arrears.
He said if vehicles are no longer in
operation, motorists are to surrender
their number plates and wheel tax
stickers.
He added that if there are any
unregistered vehicles still operating,
the owners are requested to
immediately contact the authority to
avoid necessary penalties.
Mechanic
in court
on assault
charges
A 29-year-old man of Waiqele, Labasa
appeared in Labasa Court for allegedly
hitting his mother on the head with a cane
knife.
Danny Ajay Karan is charged with one
count of assault occasioning actual bodily
harm.
Karan, a mechanic, appeared before
Magistrate Timoci Bainivalu.
Karan’s lawyer, Sarju Prasad, requested
Magistrate Bainivalu to grant bail for
Karan as he was the sole breadwinner.
Magistrate Bainivalu said since the nature
of the offence was of domestic violence
and a knife was used as a weapon he issued
an interim domestic violence restriction
order on Karan.
Mr Prasad also informed the court that
the victim was in the court and one of
the family members was prepared to be
produced as a surety for his client.
Magistrate Bainivalu approved and
released Karan on a $500 bail. The case
had been deferred to June 27 and no plea
was taken.

INCREASE Praise for the Unami Service

VIOLENCE
The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre said it
had recorded an increase in the number
of domestic violence cases reported
to them since the beginning of 2011,
according to the state owned Fiji
Broadcasting Commission website.
The centre’s coordinator Shamina Ali
was quoted as saying that the numbers
in the area of domestic violence is
definitely increasing.
Ali, however, noted that women and
children in Fiji were now coming
forward and raising their voices against
perpetrators, and the centre devoted to
responding to women and children who
are survivors of all forms of violence
would continue to do workshops around
the country to educate women and
children on their rights.
Former Fiji High Court Judge Nazhat
Shameem said that women were often
forced to reconcile in domestic violence
cases in the past, but the problems they
were facing were never solved.
“A big problem in the past was the
pressure that was put on the women to
reconcile with her husband and to drop
her complaint and many women who
go to court find that they are forced to
reconcile when the real problem behind
the domestic violence situation has not
been solved,” Shameem said.
There have been many complaints
in the past on how the police were
handling domestic violence complaint
and “gender training for police officers
is very important in order for any law
to be implemented properly,” Shameem
added.

selling them for food. The turtles were
rushed off to a recovery immersion in the
tanks of the fisheries department. Then,
later in the day, three more very old sea
turtles, including hawksbill and green
turtles, were discovered at the home of
the fisherman who had received them in
an overnight shipment from Ha’apai.
The turtles were all suffering from injuries,
and bleeding from damaged shells after
being dropped upside down and dragged
on the ground. It is usual for fishermen
to turn turtles upside down to keep them
alive, while they try to find buyers.
Turtle Lady
Jo Kupu, also known as Tonga’s “Turtle
lady” said she had rescued over 600
turtles over the last six or seven years but
the pair were among the largest she had
ever seen. She believed they were females
and that it was illegal to harvest them.
Their great size meant they were very old,
“they are probably between 150 and 170
years old,” she said.
“They suffocate when they are upside
down; they choke and drown on their own
saliva.”

Canoe disappears
off tiny
Pacific island
A MAKESHIFT outrigger canoe
carrying six passengers, including
children, has disappeared off the tiny
Pacific island group of Kiribati.
A Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion
has been searching seas around the atoll
over the weekend since it was discovered
the three-meter boat had gone missing
last Friday.
The group of two men, aged 19, and
four girls aged 8, 9, 12 and 14, were on
an expedition to collect palm leaves for
roofing off the west coast of Kiribati in
the central Pacific Ocean.
Their canoe, which was towing a smaller
dinghy, was believed to have drifted out
of a lagoon and into the open ocean.
The Orion is searching an area of one
thousand square nautical miles.
Families of the young group will be
hoping their children have the same
fortune as the three teenagers from the
tiny isle of Tokelau who survived 50 days
at sea.
The boys, two aged 15 and one 14, had
gone in search of vodka but got lost, and
were eventually found floating 1420km
from their island home.
Their home island of Atafu held memorial
services in their absence.
Major drug bust
in Cook Islands
A major drug bust in Cook Islands last
week has resulted in the arrest and court
appearances of 13 people in the capital,
Rarotonga.
Names of all the 13 individuals charged
have been with-held until their next court
appearances.
Police Commissioner Maara Tetava says
the 13 have been charged with various
drugs and corruption-related offences.
The media reports the list of offenders
include a nightclub owner, a policewoman,
a couple of restaurant workers, two public
servants and a self-employed investigator.
In a well-executed sting, Cook Islands
Police conducted an operation that took
a year and involved 11 officers from New
Zealand.
The Police Commissioner has warned
the importation and distribution of drugs
into the Cook Islands won’t be tolerated,
nor will corruption among those public
officials engaged in drug trafficking.
The Crown Prosecution opposed bail
for the 13 people charged saying police
needed to finalize the charges and prevent
offenders from influencing any potential
witnesses.
The drug raid found cannabis but Police

Indian media and entertainment giant,
Eros International is expected to
commence shooting a Bollywood movie
in Fiji by August this year.
Speaking at the Indian High Commissions
Evening of Dance, Eros representative
Vikram Rajani said his company was
looking forward to venture out into a
partnership with the Fiji government to
make the film.
“Talking as an ambassador not only of
Eros but of Bollywood, it would be a
pleasure to shoot this movie here,” said
Rajani.
He said that filming on the movie would
begin soon.

brakes on plans by ICBC to raise
rates for drivers who rack up speeding

powder or in liquid milk form should only
be sold if the container or labels containing
the words: “This product should not be used
as an infant’s sole source of nourishment”.
Namotu said the Marketing Controls
(Foods for Infants and Young Children)
Regulations 2010 promote and protect
breastfeeding and adequate nutrition for
children from birth to five years.
He said the National Food and Nutrition
Centre together with the Consumer
Council, Dietetics and Nutrition Services
and Nursing Services support the
Marketing Control Regulations 2010 and
its monitoring and enforcement by the
Environmental Health Service.
He added that failure to place the necessary
labels will result in fines of $50,000 or
imprisonment for 10 years or both.
The Marketing Controls Regulations 2010
came into effect last year on May 1 and a
grace period until end of May this year was
given for compliance.

for the first time in a documentary
about her fatal crash.
Unlawful Killing, which will be shown

A motorist in China allegedly hit a
six-year-old girl by accident, and
then returned to his car and hit her
again, in the latest suspected murder
of a hit-and-run victim, state press
reports.
An accident in Fuzhou, the capital of
Fujian province, comes after a man was
sentenced to death last month in China for
fatally stabbing a woman after first hitting
her with his car, the reporter said.
The incidents, which often involve
hit-and-run drivers, have led to hand-
wringing over the moral standards in
the nation, whose citizens have become
increasingly brash following 30 years of
booming economic growth.
The killing in Fuzhou occurred as
numerous witnesses watched in shock.
The unnamed driver, seeing he had hit the
six-year-old girl, returned to his car and
hit her again.
“He drove back, and ran the right front
wheel over the girl again,” the local Strait
Metropolitan Daily quoted witness Chen
Yi as saying.
“I was immediately so frightened that I
closed my eyes. It was so horrible.”
The girl was later pronounced dead at a
local hospital, the report said. A police
investigation is ongoing.
Last month, 21-year-old music student
Yao Jiaxin was sentenced to death in the
northern city of Xian after confessing to
hitting a woman on a bicycle and then
stabbing her to death after he got out of
the car.
Yao said he killed her because that
“peasant woman would be hard to deal
with” in the aftermath of the accident,
state press reports said.
Yao’s case has sparked a national debate
over China’s “rich second generation,” a
group of youths raised during the boom
whose morals have been called into
question.
In January the son of a senior police
official, 23-year-old Li Qiming, was
sentenced to six years in prison after a
hit-and-run.
In another incident, Tian Houbo, 21, was
arrested for hitting a beggar on a roadside
in southwest China’s Chongqing city in
December and then returning to the scene
and running over her again with his truck,
the report said.
“Since I killed a beggar, I didn’t think
anyone would pay any attention to her,”
Tian was quoted as telling the Chongqing
Morning Post.

tablets and sent her home.
At 10.15pm, she again arrived by
ambulance and a nurse phoned on-call
doctor Briandha Jeremiah, who decided
not to attend to examine her.
Dr Jeremiah told the nurse to give her a
pethidine injection, to relieve her pain, but
the inquest heard conflicting reports on
how long Mrs Owen should be monitored
afterwards.
Mrs Owen was released from hospital 40
minutes after her injection.
“A taxi took her home. She travelled
home alone. It appears that five minutes
later, Mrs Owen entered her bedroom,”
the report said.

1 tsp chilly sauce
3 tsp corn flour
1 cup milk
Salt to taste
1 tsp pepper powder
¼ cup almond paste
50 gms butter
Preparation Instructions:
Heat butter in a pan. Add broccoli florets
and cook covered till they become soft.
Now add sweet corn, almond paste and
cook on low flame for about 10 minutes.
Put all other ingredients except corn
flour and milk and a sauté for a while.
Now dissolve corn flour in milk and pour
over the mixture. Add a cup of water and
allow simmering till it attains a thick
consistency. Serve hot. You may add
sauces as per your taste.
Baked Creamed Spinach
Ingredients:
2 lb of fresh spinach.
1 ½ cups of hot milk.
1 cup of cheddar cheese, grated.
2 tablespoons of butter.
2 tablespoons of flour.
1 teaspoon of salt.
Pinch of pepper.
Pinch of nutmeg.
Preparation Instructions:
Trim and wash 2 lb of fresh spinach.
Place in a suitably-sized pot with water
still on the leaves.
Cover; then cook only until wilted.
Allow to cool, then squeeze out the
excess water.
In a saucepan, melt the butter; then add
the flour.
Whisk and gently cook for 3-4 minutes.
Add the milk; then bring to a boil.
Add the salt and a pinch of pepper and
nutmeg.
Cook for about 5-6 minutes.
Combine the sauce with the spinach and

Turn the strawberries upside down and

They are perfect for weddings when
decorated with frosting bow ties, bells,
butterflies, roses, etc.”

In the bowl of a food processor fitted
with a metal blade, process cheese,
onion, garlic, mustard, and horseradish
until it forms a coarse paste. With
machine running, pour ale through feed
tube and process until creamy. If needed,
scrape down sides of bowl; process until
fully combined. Transfer to a serving
bowl. Cover and refrigerate at least 2
hours to allow flavors to meld. Remove
from refrigerator 1 hour before serving.
Garnish with chives.
This spread is terrific with rye toasts,
baked whole-wheat pita chips, crostini,
or pretzel thins.
2 tablespoons shortening
1 pound fresh strawberries with leaves
Preparation Instructions:
Insert toothpicks into the tops of the
strawberries.
In a double boiler, melt the chocolate and
shortening, stirring occasionally until
smooth. Holding them by the toothpicks,
dip the strawberries into the chocolate
mixture.
Turn the strawberries upside down and
insert the toothpick into styrofoam for
the chocolate to cool.

Eat a healthy, balanced
diet and stay active
The key to a healthy balanced diet is
not to ban or omit any foods or food
groups but to balance what you eat by
consuming a variety of foods from each
food group in the right proportions for
good health.
The five food groups on the eatwell
plate are:
Fruit and vegetables
These should make up about a third of
your daily diet and can be eaten as part
of every meal, as well as being the first
choice for a snack.
You should eat at least five portions of
fruit and vegetables each day. Research
suggests this can help to protect against
cancer, obesity and various chronic
diseases such as heart disease. This
is because of the unique package of
nutrients and plant compounds they
contain.
Bread, rice, potatoes and pasta
This food group should also make up
about a third of your diet and contains
the starchy carbohydrates that are the
body’s main source of energy.
When selecting products from this food
group, choose unrefined carbohydrates
over those that have been refined, as
they will contain the whole of the grain.

for growth and repair.
Foods and drinks
high in fat and/or sugar
This group makes up the smallest section
on the eatwell plate and includes foods
that should only be eaten sparingly
because, although they’re an important
energy source, they contain very few
nutrients and are often known as ‘empty
calories’.
Foods from this group are high in
unhealthy components such as saturated
fat, trans fatty acids, sugar and salt –
all of which are associated with an
increased risk of developing certain
diseases.
They should only be eaten as occasional
treats, or to increase the palatability of
other important foods (such as olive oil
on salads, a scraping of spread on bread,
or a sprinkling of sugar on some tart
fruits).

Portion size
In recent years, portions have been
gradually getting bigger with the
introduction of king-size chocolate bars,
bigger bags of crisps and super-sized
meals.
Larger packets and plates can encourage
us to eat greater quantities of food,
which increases our energy intake.
Studies have found that consuming
additional food doesn’t increase your
sense of fullness, so think of ‘down-
sizing’ rather than ‘super-sizing’ for
most foods, except fruit and vegetables.
Energy density
This is the amount of stored energy
in food. Just 1g of fat provides nine
calories, which is more than double the
calories in 1g of protein or carbohydrate.
This means you can feel fuller on fewer
calories if you choose the right foods,
and in the long term you’re less likely to
gain weight.
Healthy living
Food is there to enjoy, which is often
forgotten amid all the media hype
surrounding various food items. Just
remember to keep a check on portion
size and energy density.
Food habits change slowly, but

Exercise helps to maintain your body

Man charged
for threats
against MLA
Charges of mischief and uttering threats have
been approved against a union researcher
for an incident involving Vancouver-Mount
Pleasant MLA Jenny Kwan.
A special prosecutor has approved charges
against Kimberly Burton Pollock, a
researcher with the United Steelworkers.
Pollock was scheduled to appear in court in
Vancouver on May 12.
At the legislature Monday, Kwan declined
to comment on the case, or whether it is
related to her leading role in the ouster of
former NDP leader Carole James last fall.
One of the incidents is alleged to have
taken place on Dec. 1, 2010, the day Kwan
released a letter criticizing James at length
and calling for a leadership review.
A second incident took place April 1 of
this year.
A statement from the Attorney General’s
ministry says the charges relate to alleged
threats of death or bodily harm against
Kwan, her husband and children. The media
reported that the mischief charge relates to
feces thrown on the roof of Kwan’s home in
East Vancouver.

Caring for a Baby with Constipation
Infants will pass a thick, green-black
stool (meconium) in the first 24 to
36 hours of life. As feedings become
established, the stool becomes more
yellow-green. Most infants have
stools daily, but some have them only
every two to three days. If that infant
is feeding well, has soft stools and
isn’t uncomfortable, she’s probably
not constipated.
Formula-fed babies tend to have drier,
less frequent stools than breastfed
babies. Breastfed babies are rarely
constipated. Just after birth it seems
they have a stool every time they eat.
But after a few weeks the pattern can
change to a stool every two or three
days or even once a week. If the baby
is not uncomfortable and the stools
are soft, there’s probably no problem.
Even if your baby strains to pass a
stool, he may not be constipated.
Babies often grunt, become red in
the face and pull up their legs when
passing a stool. If it’s soft and passes
without pain, these behaviors are
normal. If your infant appears to be
having difficulty, curling the knees up
against the baby’s chest might help.
If your baby’s diet changes or he’s
sick, the stool pattern may also vary.
If stools become drier, try adding a
Caring for a Baby with a Rash
Rashes in the diaper area are fairly common.
Most are due to wetness, friction and irritation
from urine and stool. Your baby may be
sensitive to a specific brand of disposable
diaper or laundering method on cloth diapers.
Neither kind of diaper is better at preventing
diaper rash.
If your baby gets a rash, the key to treatment
is keeping the diaper area clean and dry. Leave
his bottom exposed to air as much as possible.
Cleanse the diaper area with warm water,
using a mild soap after a bowel movement,
if necessary (rinse well). While diaper wipes
rarely cause rashes, they can irritate broken
skin. Use water at home and wipes for trips.
Allow the area to air-dry.
The stools of diarrhea can make the skin of
the buttocks and anus become shiny red and
painful. Don’t use a washcloth if the area is
raw; instead, sit the baby in lukewarm water to
cleanse away stool. Expose the baby’s bottom
to air as much as possible, and apply a soothing
diaper cream to put a barrier between the skin
and future stools. As the diarrhea lessens, the
skin will begin to heal.

Canucks finish off Predators
The first fatality was entertainment. The
second was Nashville’s Stanley Cup
hopes.
But while the Predators now sleep with the
catfishes, the Vancouver Canucks continue
their quest to be the first Canadian-based
team to bring the Cup north of the border
since the Montreal Canadiens did it in
1993.
On a night of tough sledding on the
choppy ice at Nashville’s hot and humid
Bridgestone Arena Monday, the Canucks
again strapped their wagon to their big
horse, Ryan Kesler, and let him pull them
through the slop to the Western final.
Kesler set up both goals as Vancouver
edged the Predators 2-1, a win that
eliminates Nashville in six games. The
Canucks will now face the winner of the
series between San Jose and Detroit.
This is the Canucks first time in the
conference final since they met, and wiped
out, the Maple Leafs in five games in
1994. It’s the third time in the history of
the franchise that they’ve made it this far.
In what is a new tradition – one that may
eventually rival the octopi toss in Motown
- a few catfish, including one huge one,
hit the ice before the game but the gesture
would have only been useful if one of
them could have strapped on a helmet and
helped out on the power play.
It certainly couldn’t have hurt.
The Predators extra-man unit smelled as
bad as one of those finned creatures left
out in the Nashville heat for the day.
The Preds stunk when they had a chance
to do some early damage, going 0-for-4
on those power plays in the first period,
including two in the early minutes.
Meanwhile, Kesler continued his dominant
performance in this series with a terrific
first period that set the tone. He picked up
two assists as the Canucks scored on two
of their first five shots to build a 2-0 lead.
Kesler now has five goals and five assists in
the last four games and he has established
himself as one of the favourites for the

went well for the Canucks in that opening
frame. Mason Raymond and Daniel Sedin
both scored their first goals of the series,
less than two minutes apart midway
through that opening frame. The Sedin
goal came on the power play, underlining
Nashville’s difficulties on special teams.
The Preds penalty killing hasn’t been very
good either.
Kesler, who chipped the puck across the
goalmouth to Sedin, has been in on 11 of
Vancouver’s last 13 goals.
Pekka Rinne, so solid in the Nashville net
all season, looked out of sorts through the
entire game. He probably wasn’t helped
by the soft, choppy ice but he appeared to
have trouble tracking the puck through the
first.
Maybe it was the crappy ice that made
this one of the ugliest games of the post-
season. The entertainment value was
virtually non-existent but for a flurry in
the second period when Nashville came
to life.
A fluky goal from behind the net from
David Legwand – again - briefly ignited
the home side but – again - the Preds
couldn’t get it done on the power play.
They pushed it to an imperfect 0-for-5 late
in the second period with an absolutely
horrible stretch of play while Vancouver’s
Raffi Torres was in the box.
Nashville did have one chance to tie it
up previous to that in the second when
Martin Erat was in alone on a breakaway
but Vancouver’s Jeff Tambellini, making
his playoff in place of Mikael Samuelsson,
caught him and bowled him over with a
great check.
It was the defensive play of the game.
The Canucks had only two shots in that
middle frame but didn’t appear worried as
the likelihood of Nashville scoring from in
front of the net was negligible.

Tiger Woods
withdraws after
9 holes
Tiger Woods lasted only nine holes Thursday
at The Players Championship.
After struggling to a six-over 42 on the front
nine, Woods withdrew due to multiple injuries.
The 2001 Players champion sprained his
medial collateral ligament in his left knee and
strained his left Achilles tendon at the Masters.
This was his first start since.
“The knee acted up and then the Achilles
followed after that and then the calf started
cramping up,” said Woods, who also stated
he started feeling pain on his first tee shot.
“Everything started getting tight, so it’s just a
whole chain reaction.”
Woods, who also withdrew from The Players
last year, had three bogeys and a triple-bogey
on the front nine. At the time he walked off,
Woods was tied for last place with Stephen
Ames.
This was the fourth time, as a professional,
that Woods withdrew from a tournament. He
also withdrew from the 1995 U.S. Open, when
he was an amateur.
This marked the first time Woods failed to
complete at least one round of a tournament
in his career.
“The (doctors) said I could play. The more rest
I get, the better it would be, obviously,” Woods
stated. “Obviously, it’s a big event. I want to
come back for it and play, and unfortunately I
wasn’t able to finish.”
Woods is still winless since the scandal broke
about his personal life in late 2009.

Things the Sharks need to win Game 7

1. QUICK START SHARKS:
The San Jose Sharks haven’t gotten off to a
good start throughout these playoffs. They
might want to find a sense of urgency right
now. Their season is on the line. They’ve
got no choice.
The Wings completely outplayed San Jose
in the first period of Game 6, outshooting
them 18-6. The Sharks need to set the pace
if they’re going to win this game. Detroit is
older, but the Wings sure haven’t looked it
lately.
2. THE RETURN OF RYANE CLOWE:
He is suffering from an upper-body ailment
that kept him out of Game 6. Clowe is the
club’s scoring leader in the playoffs with
4-9-13 points in 11 games. He is their best
player.
The Sharks need to have him back in the
lineup. The lines were out of sync without
him. Logan Couture didn’t look comfortable
on the wing. If Clowe does play, how
effective will he be? He’s going to have to
gut one out.
3. THE GOALTENDING DUEL:
Jimmy Howard and Antti Niemi have been
nothing short of spectacular in this series.
You could argue Howard has been better at
HP Pavilion than he has been at home. He’s
a rock out there.
The Sharks haven’t gotten to Howard since
Game 3 and, of course, that’s the last victory
they had. Niemi has to pick up right where
he left off in Game 6 because he’s been
a force in this series. He deserves more
support.
4. THE PRESSURE OF GAME 7:
The Sharks played all season to get home-
ice advantage for this situation. In the first
round, three of the four home teams won
the deciding game. Tampa was the only
exception over Pittsburgh.
San Jose blew a two goal lead at home in
Game 5. That’s when the meltdown really
started. The Wings don’t have any pressure
at all. No one expected them to close this
gap and tie the series. Sharks are feeling the
heat big time.
5. THE COACHING BATTLE:
So, who is going to make the change that
makes the biggest difference? Mike Babcock
has a Stanley Cup ring and Olympic gold
medal. He knows what it takes to be a
winner. He makes the right moves.
Todd McLellan hasn’t been outcoached,
but he has been outfoxed by Babcock in
the last three games. The changes in the
lines haven’t really worked. Better find the
answers or this season is going to be over
pretty quick.

ringsmanship and beautiful footwork to
outclass Mosley throughout every single
round. In the early rounds of the fight
Pacquiao and Mosley showed great respect
for each other’s power with each trading
shots to feel each other out. This continued
until the third round when Pacquiao landed
a jab and a follow up straight left which
knocked Mosley down onto the canvas!
This also was the first time since 2002 that
Mosley had gotten knocked down which
can tell you how great of a fighter Pacquiao
is. From the third round onwards Mosley
went on the defensive as it seemed he
was just trying to survive getting knocked
out for the first time in his boxing career.
Although, Pacquiao said he suffered from
leg cramps after the fourth round and
Mosley said he had a blister on his foot
that almost made his corner stop the fight
but, Pacquiao kept pouring on the shots as
he didn’t slow down the slightest showing
and power throughout all

Deepika to take legal action if
‘Ragini MMS’ not shown to her
Delhi-based Deepika, whose real
life story inspired Ekta Kapoor’s
upcoming film “Ragini MMS”, said
that if the film is not shown to her
prior to its release, she will take
legal action against the producer.
“I want to see the film. I have spoken
to Ekta about it. She doesn’t want to
show it to me, I don’t know why?”
the 22-year-old told reporters.
“I’m coming from Balaji office right
now and the only answer I get is
that the movie is not ready. How is
it possible? The movie is releasing
in one week. If I’m not shown the
film before release, I will take legal
action,” she added.
Deepika, who was shown the script
of the film before it was filmed, said
she wants to see whether she has been
portrayed in the right light or not.
“When the film was being made,
I was shown the script and I did
read it. I have no problem with the

Ekta has maintained that only 30
percent of the film is based from
Deepika’s incident and the rest is
pure imagination.
According to Deepika, she was
offered money as compensation for
her story but she refused.
“Ekta asked me if I want to be paid.
But I said no. she didn’t mention an
amount but she said she can pay me
for this. But I told her that I don’t
want anything because it’s a story
on my life,” she said.
In the real life incident, Deepika
said, her boyfriend secretly filmed
both of them involved in intimate
physical contact.

This same team collaborated earlier
to deliver the hit movie ‘Once Upon

Natalie Portman (Black Swan)
appears rather flustered when she
meets this stranger in some of the
movie’s funniest moments. Why
Portman was cast in this role is the
question of the day as she really
offers little to the proceedings and
any actress could have played this
role equally well at a fraction of
her pay. Hints of the romance
unfolding here are rather feeble,
tepid and somewhat disjointed.
All the scenes on Earth, though an
important part of the story, pale
in comparison to the computer
generated images of the “other
world.” Loads of special effects
dominate this movie and they
truly are state of the art. Tongue
in cheek dialogue simply ramps

up the whole entertainment value
to Thor which is truly enormous.
Consider Thor to be one of those
epics that must be seen on the big
screen to be fully appreciated. Do
not waste your time trying to see
this film on a computer screen
or on dvd. Big films like Thor
demand a big screen experience.
Unfortunately, the 3-D effects
aren’t that pronounced.
After the movie, notice the
hundreds of professionals who
helped bring this comic hero to
life. Pay attention: Do not leave
the movie when it ends. A key
scene from the upcoming Avengers
film is talked on at the end of the
credits. For people who value
imagination, creativity and the
ultimate confrontation between
good and evil with a touch of good
humour thrown in and a star in the
making performance by a relative
newcomer from down under, Thor
can’t be beat and will simply pound
all competitors in the marketplace.
Brave the crowds to see this event

2011 Honda Pilot Touring
Honda can, without a doubt, be considered
an environmentally friendly car company.
Their small cars, the Fit and the Civic,
are versatile, fuel-efficient and produce
low levels of CO2 emissions. Their
hybrid models, the Insight and CR-Z,
are extremely efficient. So how can they
justify an 8-passenger SUV in their product
line-up?
Well, it has to maximize fuel economy. It
has to maximize interior space. And it has
to avoid being perceived by the public as
a dirty, socially-irresponsable truck. The
Pilot manages to meet at least two of these
three conditions.
Under the hood of the Pilot resides a
24-valve, 3.5-litre V6 that’s found in
various Honda and Acura products. In this
case, it gets cylinder deactivation systems
across the model range and develops 250
horsepower as well as 253 pound-feet of

The province, the police and ICBC
launched a month-long campaign to help
raise awareness about the importance of
smart driving behaviours and the impact
of high-risk driving on our roads. One
thousand pairs of shoes set the backdrop
for today’s event, representing a small
portion of the 76-thousand people injured
in crashes each year in B.C.*
Driver actions are a contributing factor in
63 per cent of all police-attended crashes
involving injuries and fatalities in B.C.
That’s why during the month of May,
police are stepping up enforcement across
the province targeting high-risk driving
behaviours including speeding, failing
to yield, following too closely, ignoring
a traffic control device and improper
passing. ICBC will also be partnering with
Speed Watch volunteers throughout the
province to help make drivers more aware
of the actual speed they’re travelling.
“We know that many crashes and injuries
can be prevented and it’s something that
we should all seriously think about,”
said Mary McNeil, Minister of Children
and Family Development. “Many driver
behaviours may seem harmless, such as
tailgating, but the reality is they increase
the risk of causing a crash.”
“Don’t take risks that will endanger
yourself or others. We’re stepping up
enforcement to let people know we’re
serious about reducing crashes so that
what we’ve seen doesn’t happen to you,”

and the one in front of you.
• Leave early and allow for extra travel
time in case of delays.
• As a reminder: yellow lights mean you
should stop if you can do so safely.
• Slow down and drive smart.

The saying, the way to a man’s heart
is through his stomach, seems to be
true, as a study has shown that men,
who are believed to have a one-
track mind, actually think more
about food and sleep than they do
about sex.
The research also found that contrary
to popular belief, men do not think
about sex every seven seconds, and
that in reality, it is more like once every
waking hour.
Professor Terri Fisher, a psychologist
at the Ohio State University in the U.S.
carried out the study on 163 students,
both male and female.
They were asked to carry around a chart
and mark it every time they thought
about sex, food or sleep.
It was found the numbers varied widely,
as one student recorded only one sexual

A new study has found that low-
density lipoprotein (LDL) or so-called
“bad cholesterol” is not as bad as it
has been made out to be in recent
years.

suggests.
Polyphenols, plant chemicals abundant
in dark chocolate and wines, dilate
blood vessels, speeding the supply of
blood to the brain.
This provides it with a rush of
oxygen and sugars, making complex
calculations easier and quicker.
Besides polyphenols are more effective
in combination than alone, the media
reports.
The theory follows two Northumbria
University studies into the effects of
polyphenols on the mind. In the first,
healthy adults were set a series of tests
after taking a capsule packed with
resveratrol, the ‘wonder ingredient’ in
red wine.
Scans showed a marked increase in
blood flow to their brains after taking
the supplement.
Greater improvements may be seen in
the elderly, said doctoral researcher
Emma Wightman from Northumbria,
because blood flow to the brain
naturally decreases with age.
Unfortunately for wine lovers, the
quantities of resveratrol used in the
study would equate to drinking crates
of the stuff. But it is easy to get the
same amounts from supplements sold

A nurse jailed for raping another woman
in the toilets at a popular Brisbane hotel
had not got a fair trial because the
judge misdirected the jury on the issue
of mistaken belief of consent, a court
heard.
In the Court of Appeal in Brisbane Jeff
Hunter, SC, was making submissions on
behalf of Anne-Marie O’Loughlin, now
26, who was convicted in a District Court
trial last year on two counts of digital rape
and one of deprivation of liberty at the
Caxton Hotel, near the CBD, on November
29, 2009.
O’Loughlin was found not guilty of a
fourth charge of sexual assault.
She was jailed for 2-and-a-half years with
a release date in March next year.
The five-day trial heard O’Loughlin
attacked the 32-year-old woman in the
female toilets of the hotel where she
digitally vaginally and anally raped the
woman.
The victim, who cannot be named, told
the court although she kissed O’Loughlin
in the toilets for up to three minutes, she
had not given consent for Ms O’Loughlin
to pull up her top and bra and touch her
breast.
She further claimed she had not
consented to being digitally penetrated by
O’Loughlin.
In the Court of Appeal , Mr Hunter said the
jury asked for a direction on how it could
use intoxication when resolving the issue
of mistaken belief.
The judge given an incorrect direction and
the jury was given a written version of it

Cyclone shelters announced for Queensland
TEN cyclone shelters will be built in
north Queensland after a $30 million
donation from the Emirati state of
Abu Dhabi.
United Arab Emirates Minister of State
Reem Al-Hashimy announced the
donation while visiting Brisbane.

Anna Bligh, who said the $60 million
would be used for multi-purpose
shelters along the north Queensland

other agendas was offensive to devotees.
Symbols of any faith should not be
mishandled, he added.
In an earlier protest statement, Zed,
who is president of Universal Society
of Hinduism, asked the swimwear
raised the question about how her buttons
were undone so O’Loughlin could get her
hands in a position for digital assault.
“In a case of word versus word a
properly instructed jury should have had
reservations about consent,” he added.
However, Michael Copley, SC, for the
Director of Public Prosecutions, said
there had been no direction which had
disadvantaged O’Loughlin.
He said when read in its entirety the
direction had properly explained the
concept of intoxication and reasonableness
and mistaken belief.
Mr Copley said on the tight jeans the
evidence showed penetration had taken
place and it was not an issue.
The Court of Appeal reserved its judgment.

A MAN who allegedly hit his wife with a
tomahawk and stabbed her with a fork
has been arrested, Northern Territory
Police say.
The 35-year-old man appeared in the
Alice Springs Magistrates Court, accused
of seriously assaulting his 39-year-old
wife last Friday night.
In a statement released on Monday,
a police spokeswoman said Alice
Springs police received a telephone
call at about 9pm about a domestic
disturbance in a house on Ellery
Drive.
A woman at the house told police her
husband hit her in the leg with a tomahawk
and stabbed her in the head and wrist with
a fork.
She also said he hit her twice over the
head with a plastic chair.
“The woman said her husband had also
dragged her from a car earlier in the night
and kicked her to the head and stomach,”
the spokeswoman said.
The woman was taken to Alice Springs
Hospital by ambulance for treatment.
The man has been charged with
aggravated assault and two counts
of being armed with an offensive
weapon.

a narrow by-election victory Wednesday
night that will see her return to the
provincial legislature.
Clark barely defeated B.C. NDP challenger
David Eby in the tightly fought contest in
the riding of Vancouver-Point Grey.
As the votes were being counted, Eby was
actually ahead of Clark for much of the
night.
But when all 167 ballot boxes were
tallied, Clark had pulled ahead with 7,371
votes for 48.92 per cent of the votes cast.
Eby’s garnered 6,776 votes for 44.97 per
cent of the vote.
Clark’s victory marked the first time in 30
years that any sitting government in the
