Kiwi fraudster made good –
on Apple stock
New Zealand’s worst benefit fraudster is
now accusing the authorities of ‘legalised
theft’ after his solid investments earned the
Government more than he stole.
Wayne Patterson faked 123 identities to
swindle the Government out of $3.4m in
benefit payments over three years, and

Apple’s latest earnings call
Apple announced financial results for its
fiscal 2011 second quarter ended March
26, 201, posting record second-quarter
revenue of US$24.67 billion and a record
second-quarter net profit of US$5.99 billion,
or US$6.40 per diluted share (vs US$5.37
EPS). These results compare to revenue
of $13.50 billion and net quarterly profit of
$3.07 billion, or $3.33 per diluted share, in
the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was
41.4% compared to 41.7% in the year-ago
quarter. International sales accounted for
59% of the quarter’s revenue.
Apple sold 3.76 million Macs during the
quarter, a 28% unit increase over the year-
ago quarter.
Apple music deal – in the Cloud?
Peter Kafka reported on the Wall Street
Journal’s MediaMemo blog that at least two
out of four major record labels have signed
on the dotted line for an Apple cloud music
service. The rumoured service will let you
keep your music in the cloud, and stream it
to any authorised device.

A report entitled How Dirty is Your Data:
A Look at the Energy Choices That
Power Cloud Computing analyses power
consumption and pollution generated by
super datacentres operated by Apple,
Facebook, IBM and others.
Apple, whose latest 500,000 square feet
datacentre in North Carolina is either
operational or about to be, ranked last in the
report.
Most datacentres use “dirty energy”,
Greenpeace said (you can view the report as
a PDF).
(The last time Greenpeace slammed Apple, it
was on the basis of info that was out of date,
but it still led to the widespread design and
adoption of greener tech at Apple and more
aluminium-encased products. Aluminium is
more recyclable than polycarbonate.)
Recent Updates
iTunes 10.2.2 provides a number
of important bug fixes, including
addressing an issue where iTunes may
becomes unresponsive when syncing
an iPad. It also resolves an issue which
may cause syncing photos with iPhone,
iPad, or iPod touch to take longer than
necessary, and more.

Recommended for all Safari users, it
includes the latest security updates for
Mac and Windows (link).
GarageBand Update 6.0.2
Improves overall stability and a number
of minor issues, and adds support
for opening projects imported from

for all GarageBand ’11 users.
Late Breaking: iPhoto 9.1.2 adds new
card themes to the app and improves
overall stability. Snow Leopard Font
Update is for all Mac OS X 10.6.7 users

Signs point to an imminent iMac refresh. An
unsourced report claimed new-model iMacs
are en route to the United States for a late
April or early May launch.
Last week, 9to5Mac’s sources across
the globe backed up these claims, and
iMac shipments and components became
constrained.
It’s widely assumed new iMacs will have
Sandy Bridge CPUs which can be twice as
fast as current, and Thunderbolt ports.

app for the month: IMDb
“But I use the website often, for info about
character in movies or when the old question
‘where have I seen him/her before?’ arises.
On the iPad in Safari, the IMDb experience
isn’t that great, but the application is
streamlined, functional and very clean.
When you first open the application you
get an interactive banner displaying ‘of
interest’ movie trailers. You get a ‘Now
Playing’ striped interface similar to the Apple
TV’s rentals section. In the IMDb app, this
displays the latest movies on show, along
with all the information you would
expect from IMDB including show
times.
The application uses your current
location and gives you all the cinemas
in your area and showing times for all
the movies playing – including here in
New Zealand.
Just bellow that, you get another strip
displaying the current ‘most viewed
actors and actresses’. When selected,
the app loads another screen with
related information, trivia and images.
Again, everything you have
come to expect from the
incredibly large IMDb database.
There is a search bar at the top
of the application so you can
search for a movie, TV show or
celebrity. An excellent feature
of this search is that, as you
type, the applications starts
recommending media and/or
people to you. This is great if
you can’t quite remember the full name of
the person you are looking for.
I wouldn’t mind spending for an app this
functional, but they didn’t give me the
chance. The IMDb app is free and it’s on my
first Home Screen.”

1/Save a page — You can bookmark a
page for later use, sure, but what if you want
to save the entire page? Then, if the site
disappears or something goes wrong with
it, you still have it’s info and pictures – even
links – safe. Fortunately, it’s really easy.
Choose Command S. You have the choice
between a Web Archive or a Page Source,
which is a smaller file that essentially links to
the page, so you’d better hope it’s still there
in two years time.(A Web Archive saves
everything into a file.)
2/ Send a link to someone else — You
probably know (it has been in a previous
tips) you can just drag the ‘favicon’ out of
the browser window and drop in onto your
desktop. It’s essentially a ‘page source’
leading to the original link. Drop it into
an email message window or even into
something you are writing in Word. The
favicon is the little icon to the left of the page
address in the URL bar.
3/ Command-send — But Safari has
built-in commands that let you send pages
in a flash. Boot Safari, then hold down the

Safari – it’s on every Mac
but don’t take it for granted
Command key on your keyboard and press
the letter ‘i’. In a matter of seconds, the entire
web page is loaded into a Mail window all
ready for you to blat off to someone.
Don’t want to send a page with all it images
etc? Don’t worry – add Shift into the key
combination. Command-Shift-I just loads a
Mail window with the link pasted into it.
4/ Search the page — It still surprises me
how often I meet people who don’t know this
most basic of tricks. Command F on Mac is
always Find – and on a huge web page that
scrolls down for miles into the centre of the
Earth, it works brilliantly for finding instances
of a word.
In Safari, hold down the Command key
and while it’s held down, press F for find,
type ‘xerxes’ into the little search window
that appears at top right, and you will find
every instance of ‘xerxes’ on the page. The
dialogue is interactive – all instances are
highlighted on the page, and the little arrows
jump you forwards and backwards to them.
You’re not searching the ’net with Command
F, just the page you have loaded. It’s super
handy.
Tips from ‘Five Tip Fridays’
Those who follow my mac-nz.com news
service know that every Friday, for about
12 hours, I make available five tips –
‘Five Tip Friday’.
Unable to bear the collective moan that
arose around the country when I deleted
them at the end of the day, I decided to
collate them into this monthly magazine.
5/ Security — If you don’t want files loading
willy-nilly into your Mac, open Safari, open
Preferences from the Safari menu, and
under the General tab make sure ‘Open
“safe” files after downloading’ is NOT
checked.
From then you will need to go through your
Downloads folder and install any software
you want, but it’s safer and at least you know
what you are installing.
Pressing the magnifying glass icon
in the Downloads window (Window
menu>Downloads, or Command-Option-L)
opens the folder the download went to and
displays the file. Remember to clear your
history (History menu>Clear History) to
delete the links to your bank etc if you have
been using someone else’s computer.

What about your Mac hardware? How do you look after that?
1/ Cleaning — Don’t spill liquids onto
keyboards of running Macs. They’re
electrified and you can destroy your Mac and
you may get a shock.
You can clean a screen while the Mac is
running, but don’t spray a screen cleaner
directly onto the monitor. Liquid can run
down and go inside.
Spray onto a proper cleaning cloth, instead,
then apply the cloth in a gentle motion to the
screen.
To clean plugged-in components, shut the
Mac down and disconnect the power cable.
Unplug the keyboard, mouse etc before
cleaning with a very slightly-moistened cloth
that’s been well wrung out. The cloth does
not require solvents, which may damage the
finish or worse.
2/ The not so obvious — don’t jar a Mac
while it’s running. Hard drives are fragile
and spin at 5500 or 7200 revs per minute
(SSD-based storage is pretty much immune
to knocks, which is another reason Apple is
moving that way).

(or HD-based iPod) while it’s running, the
head can collide with the spinning disk and
damage it.
You can park the head, making it jar-proof,
in two ways – shut your computer down
completely or, more conveniently, put it into
Sleep mode (Apple menu>Sleep).
A great shortcut for Apple laptops is to simply
close the lid. The MacBook and MB Pro
go instantly into Sleep mode, safe to carry
around – get into the habit of closing the lid
before walking around with a Mac laptop.
Just open the lid to ‘awaken’ it.
3/ Magnets and cell phones — These
can wipe or damage hard drives as they
use magnetism to store data. So keep
cell phones, which can generate electro-
magnetic fields, away from your Mac or
external hard drives. Don’t put them together
in your bag or on the car seat, and don’t put
our laptop down on stereo speakers , which
house large magnets.
4/ Accessorise for safety — There are
great, padded, shower-proof bags for laptops
by, for example, STM and Crumpler available
from Apple Resellers.
Fitted keyboard covers like Sonnet’s silicone
(washable) Carapace (above) prevent dust
and dirt getting between the keys, offer a
little splash protection and have the added
benefits of being washable and making
keyboards quieter (resulting in much quieter
typing).
Further, on laptops, the Carapace helps
prevent the keys marking the screen when
the lid is closed.
5/ Software, storage, defragmenting — Do
not leave files on the desktop! It’s wrong.
The Finder is not designed to store files,
particularly not large and important ones. If
you get a major crash, these are the first to
evaporate. Files belong in the Documents
folder. (A note to switchers – your Mac
defragments your hard drive automatically.)

iTunes doesn’t behave like other apps. It’s a browser, for a start
as ‘Zoom’ in the menu).
Additionally, Option+clicking the green
maximise button has the same effect.

2/ Smarter Genius — Genius Mixes in
iTunes group related tracks in convenient
playlists without any intervention on your
part. But Genius Mixes have flaws. You can’t
see which tracks are in them, so you never
know what’s coming next. Also, if you have
a smallish library and you listen to the same
Mix for a long time, songs start to repeat.
Create a new playlist (File>New Playlist or
Command-N). Then, select iTunes DJ in the
sidebar. (If it’s not there, open the General
tab in iTunes’ Preferences and select iTunes
DJ in the Show section.) At the bottom of
the iTunes DJ window, select the Genius
Mix you want from the Source drop-down.
Click on Settings and choose to show 100
upcoming songs; while you’re there, select
Play Higher Rated Songs More Often to
make it more likely you’ll hear songs you like
(assuming you rate your tracks).
Now get rid of the duplicates. Select then
drag the first track in the iTunes DJ playlist
to the Select Genius playlist. Then go
back to iTunes DJ, select all of its tracks
(Command-A), and drag them all over to the
Select Genius playlist in the sidebar. You
should now see a dialogue telling you that
duplicates are being added. Click on Skip
to prevent those dupes from being copied.

3/ You can refine that playlist further —
sorting by rating and removing lower-rated
tracks, for example, or sorting by artist and
removing the ones you don’t want to hear.
4/ Order the list — With the track number
column selected at the top (select headers to
choose the sort order you want by clicking on
them), you can change the order of tracks in
a normal playlist.
5/ Share your playlist — If you’d like to
share a playlist with someone else, you can
share your hard work without requiring the
same commitment from others.
Setting up a playlist in iTunes is easy
enough: Click the plus (+) icon below the
sidebar or select File>New Playlist (or use

the keyboard shortcut Command-N) name it,
then find songs in your library and add them
to the playlist. (You can also use a smart
playlist if you want.)
A playlist is a ‘list’ – deleting a song from a
playlist just takes it off the list. It does not
delete the song from your Library.
Select items in your iTunes library, or in
a playlist, and drag them onto the new
playlist’s name in the sidebar, or select
tracks in iTunes, control- or right-click on
them, and choose Add To Playlist from the
contextual menu.
By default, a normal playlist sorts by the
order in which you add songs. You can move
the songs around to change the order and
work out the best sequence for your music,
but make sure the playlist is sorted by the
track number column header, with the arrow
pointing up.
To share the playlist, click on it once
in the iTunes sidebar, then choose
File>Library>Export Playlist. Save the file in
the default XML format and send this to the
person you want to share this playlist with.
The recipient can then open iTunes and
choose File>Import Playlist, and select the

XML file. If the person doesn’t have all the
songs (see Additional Tip at the end), they
will see an alert. If they do, the playlist will be
added with all the songs you set up in your
original playlist. The person can listen to the
playlist in iTunes or sync it to an iOS device.
Additional tip 1 — if your recipient doesn’t
have all the songs, there’s still an easy way
you can share them. iTunes’ Home Sharing
allows users who share the same iTunes
Store account to copy files, over a local
network, from one iTunes library to another.
Load a library, click on the disclosure triangle
next to the name of the library, then the one
next to the Playlists folder. Select a playlist,
and you’ll see its contents in the main
section of the iTunes window. Select all the
tracks, then click Import. The playlist itself
doesn’t import in this manner, so you’ll still
need to export and import it as explained
above. But all the tracks from the playlist will
be copied to the second computer.
Additional Tip 2 — You can gift a playlist to
a friend, assuming everything is available on
the iTunes Store.
If you want to share the contents of you
favourite playlist with a friend, you can
send it as a gift (within the limits of what’s
available on the iTunes Store).
When you select a playlist, you can click the
small arrow icon to the right of its name to
get a dialogue box asking if you want to give
this playlist or publish it on the iTunes Store.
If you click Give Playlist, iTunes will look
at your songs then take you to the iTunes
Store.
There are limits – what’s available, if your
playlist contains any songs that are album-
only sales, you can’t give them; and if your
playlist contains any album-only songs, the
process will stop.
But assuming you can give the playlist
you’ve created, I’m sure your recipient will be
very happy.
And you’ll have to pay for them, of course!

HowTo: Set up Time Machine
Time Machine is built into every Mac – once you have your backup drive, what next?
Time Machine is brilliant
– but you have to set it up
I have seen three clients in three months
who bought either an external hard drive or,
in one case, a Time Capsule, and thought
they were backing up. But they had never
plugged them in ...
Time Machine is ingenious, but you need
to connect a volume to back up to, and you
need to turn it on.
The first time you plug in any external drive,
OS X may ask you if you want to use it as a
Time Machine backup.
If you click “Use as a Backup Disk” to
confirm you want to use the disk for
Time Machine backups, Time Machine
preferences will open with this disk selected
as your backup.

Time Machine keeps hourly backups for
the past 24 hours, daily backups for the
past month, and weekly backups until your
backup drive is full.
If you clicked Decide Later, and want to
use a hard drive for backups now, with the
intended drive plugged into your Mac, open
System Preferences and click on Time
Machine. It’s in the fourth row, under System
(right). Turn it on.
Under Options, you can choose to exclude
some things – I exclude my Applications’
folder, for example. It’s tedious, but if things
go badly wrong with my drive, I’d rather
reinstall all my software fresh.

HowTo: Set up Time Machine
Time Machine is built into every Mac – once you have your backup drive, what next?
Now, Time Machine starts up and backs up
the entire contents of your internal hard drive
to the backup drive.
Once this full copy has been made, Time
Machine polls you internal system and the
backup to see what’s changed, and simply
backs up those changes, so subsequent
backups can take 12 seconds to a few
minutes, or many minutes in the case of
massive video files.
So the first backup may take a while. It took
my MacBook Pro all night. You may want to
set up Time Machine in the evening so that
the initial backup can be done overnight.
If your backup disk is a Time Capsule, the
initial backup will be faster if you leave
your computer in the same room as the
Time Capsule and use an Ethernet cable
to connect your computer to one of the
Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule.
I strongly recommend this approach!
You should not interrupt the initial backup.
You can continue to use your Mac while
Time Machine backs up.

How big a hard drive?
The size needed for the back up drive
depends on how much space you expect
to use on your internal hard drive. If you’re
currently using only about 30GB of your
500GB hard drive and you don’t expect to be
adding a lot of videos or photos in the future,
you can safely use a 120GB hard drive, but a
great rule of thumb is get twice the capacity
of your Mac’s drive.
A flash drive would be awesomely fast, but
they’re simply not big enough yet. And SSD’s
are probably too small and too expensive
still. One day ...
If you want to be able to go back in time
several months to recover a lost file or an
older version of a file, you will need the extra
size.
When the Time Machine is disk gets full it
just removes the oldest backup to make
room for the new backup. Hence, the smaller
the external hard drive, the less history you
can save. This process also slows things
down. Apple has more info online.
What is a ‘Time Capsule’?
The Time Capsule is a 2 Terrabyte drive in
a small, stylish and cute Apple enclosure for
NZ$509.
It’s also a full-featured AirPort Extreme Base
Station with high-speed 802.11n Wi-Fi.
If you’re adding Time Capsule to an existing
wireless network, set it as the primary base
station to benefit from its faster performance.
Once the initial backup is completed, TM
performs subsequent hourly backups of only
the files that have changed since the last
backup (as long as your Mac is awake and
the backup disk is connected).
But no fiddly wires and plugging the drive in.
You can hide the Time Capsule, as long
is it’s a ventilated space and clean, so if
someone steals all your Macs your data is
safe. You can launch all of that into a new,
borrowed or hired Mac the first time you boot
it up (it asks if you want to start from a Time
Machine backup).
